If you’re a fan of the official CNN app for Windows Phone, which used to be exclusive to Nokia but is now available for all, you’ll want to go grab version 1.3.03 now in the Marketplace.

For the most part, the app looks the same though we suppose there could be some under the hood changes but the big new feature is a section dedicated to the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The section is merely one of a multitude of others under the ‘sections’ area but it features all the latest news for you sport nuts. Even better is the ability to pin the Olympic section to your Start screen for quick and easy access—in fact we highly recommend doing just that.

If you find any other changes, let us know and we’ll throw up an update. Otherwise you can go and grab the official CNN app now in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Makre sure you also see our Olympic app roundup for more coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. QR code after the break..

Update: CNN 'hid' the old CNN app in the Marketplace and added a 2nd version (presumably so they can roll back after the Olympics are over). Link and QR code updated for v1.3.

Windows Phone Central's Roundup of the 2012 Olympic Game apps

[With the Olympics kicking off tonight, we figured we would bump our roundup of apps for Windows Phone that will keep you up to date on the massive sporting event. -- Daniel]

The official Olympic app hit the Marketplace a few days ago, London 2012, and these are a few of the alternatives that stood out to us. Some stand out stronger than others and some have features that have them stand out a little.  Also remember that this is just a sampling of what is available. The number of Olympic apps at last count was pushing thirty.  If you've got a favorite Olympic app that didn't make the cut, feel free to share in the comments.

An update was pushed out to Nokia Lumia Windows Phone for the ESPN app this morning that adds a listing for the 2012 Olympic Games on the Sports Page. London 2012 will pull up all the news, social feeds from @ESPN_OlySports, and medal counts for the Summer Olympics.

While there are a handful of Windows Phone apps dedicated to the Summer Olympics, having coverage rolled into a sports app that many already visit makes keeping up with the games rather convenient.

You can find the ESPN app here in the Marketplace or under the Nokia Collection that is in your Marketplace app on your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone. ESPN is a free app and for the time being, an exclusive for the Nokia Windows Phone.

Thanks Cory, Mark and everyone else for the tip!

Just in the nick of time for the Summer Olympics, Ripple has been released over at the Windows Phone Marketplace. Ripple is a map based companion app for the 2012 Olympic Games in London (that start Friday).

The app offers two views, a map view and an augmented reality view. Information tabs line the sides of the screens and an image/attraction filter can be pulled up from the bottom of the screen.

The official 2012 Olympic Games app has landed in the Windows Phone Marketplace. London 2012 was developed by the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and is designed to keep you up to date with the latest Olympic action and Paralympic action.

The app is laid out nicely with the following pages.

  • Live Updates Page that currently displays a countdown timer to the Olympic Opening Ceremony. From there, the page will display updates from the games.
  • Sports Page that breaks down the events by sports. Each sports tile will pull up the specific events, news items for that sport, a photos page and an About page that covers any rules and venue information on that sport.
  • Calendar Page breaks things down by date. Tap on a date and you'll pull up an time listing of events by sport. Tap and hold an event to set a reminder so you won't be late.
  • The Favourites Page lists any sport you've tagged as favorite or reminders you've set.
  • The Menu Page has links to view the games schedules and results, medal tally, athlete profiles, access the My Games section and access the app's settings. The My Games section can be set to a specific Country to pull up news, reminders and favourites for the Country.

You can toggle between the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games through the three-dot menu that runs across the bottom of the main pages. The Paralympic content isn't currently available but is expected to be available in time for those games (August 29th through September 9th).

London 2012 is a very nice application to keep you informed on the Olympic Game results and schedules. While the app does give a good bit of information about the venues of the Olympics it lacks any mapping support. While you can easily switch over to Bing maps or Nokia maps, it would have been nice to have everything under one roof.

The LOCOG is working on a companion app for London 2012, the London 2012 Join In app, that is a mobile guide to help plan, enjoy and share your gaming experience for the Olympics and Paralympics.  Hopefully the mapping component will be a part of this companion app but it sounds more like a Twitter/Facebook app.  We'll keep a look out for the Join In app and let you know.

London 2012, the official Olympic Games app, is a free offering (ad supported) that you can find here at the Windows Phone Marketplace. While this is the official app, there are several other 2012 Olympic apps available on the Marketplace. Look for a round-up of these alternative Olympic apps on Friday with this week's Windows Phone Central Roundup.

The 2012 Summer Olympics are just over two weeks away. The London games are set to begin on July 17, 2012 and the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) is eagerly working on an official Windows Phone app for the games. LOCOG's Chief Information Officer Gerry Pennell stated the release is imminent and should be available in days.

While features of the Windows Phone app weren't mentioned, the Windows Phone version should be similar to the iOS and Android Olympics app that sends game results and schedules to the app.  A version of the app is also in the works for Blackberry devices.

There are currently a handful of 2012 Olympic apps already on the Marketplace and it will be nice to see an official offering join the ranks. Speaking of what's already available, look for a roundup of these Olympic apps this Friday.

We'll keep you posted when the official apps hits the Marketplace.

In case you haven’t heard, there is a huge event happening this month; an event that people around the world will be watching. No, I’m not talking about Mobile World Congress; though we (Dieter and Phil) will be there. I’m referring of course to the Winter Olympics.

Several Windows Mobile heavyweights are listed as sponsors of Vancouver 2010; one of them, Samsung, has a free application available to allow you to follow the games easily from your Windows Phone. Weather Updates, Medal Tracker, Schedule, and News are just some of the features that Samsung puts at your fingertips.

Head on over to the Samsung Vancouver 2010 site for the application (you’re looking for the “Download Wow” button in the bottom right corner).

Yeah, you read that right. Not the iPhone. Not the Pre. Not a BlackBerry. Not that newfangled Droid. A Windows Mobile phone is the official phone of the 2010 Winter Olympics. And not just any phone, the Samsung Omnia II with its AMOLED screen and 800MHz processor, Windows Mobile 6.5 and all the trimmings. Not bad, eh? [Press release via Unwired View]
