The popular Windows Phone photography app Photosynth was updated today to version 1.6, mainly to deal with stability and performance issues.

The update addresses the camera viewfinder turning green after using Photosynth, updated the camera calibration logic to properly preserve the field of view information and improvements to auto-cropping of a flat panorama for sharing or saving images to your Pictures Hub.

Nokia's Camera Extras for the Lumia Windows Phones has been available in the US for a while now. While the initial release was in the U.S., Indian and Chines markets, we knew it was only a matter of time before other markets would get the camera app.  Such is the case now with Australia, the United Kingdom and Italy (and probably other markets) where Windows Phone shutterbugs in these Countries can enjoy the extra camera settings.

Another non-detailed update has hit the Windows Phone Marketplace. The other day similar updates hit Photosynth and the Dark Knight Rises apps. Today, it's the Nokia Creative Studio app.

There really isn't anything noticeable beyond the change in the version display (version 1.2 to version 1.3) and it is likely that the update makes a few under the hood adjustments that improves performance.

For those not familiar with Creative Studio, it is available on all Nokia Lumia Windows Phones and is a basic photo editing app. You can take and edit photographs through Creative Studios, edit existing photos from your Pictures Hub and create panorama images. Creative Studios has special effects, filters and your basic editing tools (crop, contrast, exposure, etc.) that you can apply to your photos.

You can find Creative Studios on your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone from the Marketplace app under the Nokia Collection.

Thanks, ej lee, for the tip!

When PhotoSynth for Windows Phone 7 hit the marketplace last week, we knew there would be discussions over the requirement of a gyroscope - and there was.

When users try download the app with a phone that doesn't have a gyroscope, they are presented with an error that reads "Some features in this application might not work because your phone doesn't have..gyroscope" - this does not stop the download though. Users of any 1st gen Windows Phone (HD7, Focus, Omnia 7, Trophy etc) will get this message, along with any users of a 2nd gen phone that is missing the gyroscope (most notably the Nokia Lumia 710 and 800). We don't know why the 710 and 800 do not have a gyro, but it may have simply come down to a cost-benefit decision, as the flagship 900 does have one. So what does a gryo do, and do you really need one? Read on to find out.

We were just mentioning how Microsoft was teasing Photosynth for Windows Phone and sure enough, the popular and creative photo stitching app is now available!

"Photosynth for Windows Phone is the panorama app that makes it easy and fun to capture and share interactive panoramas of the places, people, and events that are important to you. Using the latest in computer vision techniques, Photosynth is the acknowledged leader in mobile panorama creation. It is the only app available on any mobile platform that allows you to capture 360 degrees horizontally and vertically, making a perfect “sphere."

Once you’ve created a Photosynth, you can share it as an interactive panorama experience on Facebook and Twitter (using the free Photosynth.net service) or as a simple image. You can also publish your panoramas to Bing where millions of people will see your panoramas, on Bing Maps and in Bing search results for the places you've captured. And check out our featured list, where we show off the best of what you and your fellow users create and share."

The app seems very fluid on our Focus 2 and we'll be sure to share some test shots as soon. But for now, go forth and enjoy the latest creation from Microsoft, we're sure you'll be impressed. Leave comments on your thoughts below.

Update: We should note that Windows Phones without a compass or gyroscope (e.g. the HTC Radar) can still use the app but it won't work as fluidly. You'll receive a message informing you as much but you can still download and use the app.

Update 2: Photosynth won't run on Tango hardware like the Lumia 610 as it needs at least 512MB of RAM for processing.

Pick up Photosynth for Windows Phone here in the Marketplace.

Nokia has released Creative Studio for Windows Phone, available to all Lumia handset owners. This app is a simple (but free) photo editing suite that enables users to alter and then share photos taken with the smartphone. A number of effects, filters and tools are available to turn that snap shot into a more visually appealing photo.

What's also neat is the patented technology used in the app which allows live, in-camera effects to be active so users are able to see what the end result would be without taking the shot. As well as this, we also have a panorama feature, which many desire as built-in functionality. Hopefully, with the recent news of said functionality coming to Lumia handsets, we shouldn't need to rely on an app soon enough.

You can download Creative Studio on your Lumia Windows Phone.

In a Lumia 900 FAQ we recently covered, Nokia has confirmed that the WiFi hotspot / tethering feature will be present on the Lumia 610 and 900 Windows Phones at launch. As for the 710 and 800, which are currently missing this highly desired functionality, we'll likely see an update in the future to activate it. It's pleasing to know that it's actually on the way for owners.

"Q: When will the tethering update for the Lumia devices be pushed out?

A: It will be in coming soon for 800 and 710 via Zune update, for 610 and 900 it will be available at launch."

What's more is that Damian Dinning, camera guru at Nokia, has confirmed on Twitter that the company are looking to introduce a panorama feature on the Lumia 800 - something the Windows Phone lacked for many trigger happy users. Unfortunately, there's no word on a date or if we'll see this introduced on other Lumia handsets, though it makes perfect sense to expect such a roll out.

Windows Phone App Review: AutoPanorama

AutoPanorama, as the name implies, is a panorama app for your Windows Phone. The app is very similar to Pano and will stitch two or more images together to create that wide panoramic look for landscapes, indoor shots or any other situation where you can't step back far enough to get everything captured in one shot.

AutoPanorama can do a decent job at merging the individual photographs to create panoramas.  But I found that the app struggles more times than not to create a seamless, level stitching or merging of the photographs.  AutoPanorama is a nice option for Windows Phone cameras that lack a native panorama feature but you need a bit of patience and a sturdy tripod.

For those lucky enough to have a Titan or Radar on hand, you may have noticed a small update today for your 'Camera Modes' app. The update brings it to version 1.5 and the app itself is used for the Panorama and Burst Shot modes which are built into the Camera menu system. Allowing you to take 3 photos and stitch them together, the Panorama mode is something HTC has been adding to all of their phones (Android too), while 'burst' allows you to take rapid shots all by holding down the camera button.

No specific word on changes, unfortunately, as HTC likes to keep that info to themselves. Presumably then this is just some bug fixes or improvements in quality. But hey, if you notice anything, shout out in comments and share. We don't have a link for this one (hidden) so you'll just need to wait till you get the Update notification, which should be very soon.

Thanks to all who sent this in!
