promotion

Developers have a hard time getting word out about their work, especially since the platform is still relatively young. Here in the UK we have the Windows Phone User Group, headed up by Matt Lacey (@mrlacey). The monthly meetings enable developers to showcase their apps and / or work in all areas of Windows Phone. We tag along each time to offer more support for developers and to see what's new in the community.

It's a perfect opportunity to get involved and also to meet ourselves for some coverage on this very website. This coming Monday (May 20th), the group is heading to Nokia's new offices in Paddington, London. We encourage all developers to register, come along and demonstrate their work to the audience. As an incentive, there's a special prize on offer too for the best app. Who doesn't want free promotion these days?

Marie Claire (www.marieclaire.co.uk), a popular women's magazine, held a @work with Windows Phone event in London where a panel discussed the importance of maintaining a healthy work and life balance. The panel consisted of Marie Claire editor Trish Halpin, Holly Willoghby, Balance Me co-founder Rebecca Hopkins and jewellery designer Bec Clarke.

The four ladies were joined by dozens of Marie Claire readers for an afternoon discussing women at work and how technology can provide useful features to help smooth out each day.

Shh. Can you hear that? Yup, that's the sound of a pin dropping when it comes to Microsoft shouting out and marketing Windows Phone. The company had a rather elusive presence at CES earlier this year, as well as the recent Mobile World Congress. If you ask anyone, "Who's powering Windows Phone marketing?" I bet the majority (if not everyone) will answer, "Nokia." So what's up with Microsoft?

Chu Yi, a university intern in the US, has created an impressive Windows Phone video. Yi chose to make a model version of a Windows Phone, which sports interchangeable tiles to create a unique effect when coupled with post-production effects (speeding everything up). The general idea was to highlight the ability to personalise Windows Phone to suit individual characteristics. We'll have to admit we're rather impressed.

Microsoft launches new Windows 8 commercials

We're entering into 2013 and Microsoft has already displayed signs of the company continuing to push on with its marketing campaign for its Windows family of products - namely Windows 8. Ever wondered what children get up to with mobile phones with no parental supervision? Nokia decided to do a short film on how it is when taken to extreme levels. We're shown, who we can only assume is a 5 year old, mess around with a Lumia 920 by taking photos of his mother while asleep and setting it as the wallpaper on the lock screen.

Don’t adjust your spell checkers folks, ‘Trendify’ could be the next buzz we've all been looking for. Nokia India has posted a new video showing off the more affordable Lumia 510.

It’s all fun and games during the segment but getting down to business they are touting the Lumia 510’s social side. During the video we’re seeing all kinds of crazy hand to hand kissing going on during the little video, check it after the break.

Microsoft has been busy celebrating Windows Phone 8 alongside the Christmas period, with stalls set up in several markets in Germany. The country is well known for its Christmas markets (we even have them here in the UK) and WParea managed to trek down to one in Hamburg Ottensen where a Windows Phone hut was discovered.

Microsoft recently published a video on its Windows Phone YouTube channel that featured Misfit Toys and 'Bumble' (The Abominable Snow Monster of the North) for a new Windows Phone 8 commercial. The team is back with another festive themed commercial featuring not only the Snow Monster, but Santa Clause who is enjoying a quick dip before the mad rush to deliver presents to kids around the world.

Yesterday another Video appeared on the dedicated Surface YouTube Channel but it dispels with any meaningful message in favour of irritating music and mind bending spins and flips.

The Surface tablet is Microsoft’s first foray into selling its own computer and is designed to go head to head with an army of Android tablets and the seemingly unstoppable Apple iPad. Anticipation for this device amongst many, including staff here at Windows Phone Central has been high and we have written about how much we like it but we aren’t really what you’d call the average consumer. So what is going with the advertising for Surface?

Nokia has uploaded a video to its UK YouTube channel that teases "something on the horizon..." with Deadmau5 (deadmau5.com). Not a lot of information to go on, but we believe another live event may be on the calendar somewhere down the line.

Verizon has published a new video on its YouTube channel, an advertisement for the new Windows Phone 8X by HTC. The title "Ummm/Ohh" pretty much sums up the entire commercial, which we expect to see on the big screen shortly with the launch of the Windows Phone already in full effect.

Microsoft is set to spend an incredible amount of money marketing both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. The former is the next version of the company's desktop OS, while Windows Phone 8 is the new release that is hoped to help bring Microsoft into the mobile market with a respectable share of the pie. The Sun has reported that Microsoft has snapped up multiple big names to help push the mobile platform.

Verizon is starting pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 822, the carrier exclusive version of the Lumia 820, and it seems the US network is gearing up for a Windows Phone push in the states. Photos have been published to Twitter of what appears to be a Live Tiles promotion set up for the platform.

Update: And oddly enough the video has be retro-edited to remove the Lumia 920. We're not sure why but you can see the original version here and the edited one below. Thanks, nikhilr51.

The Lumia 920 in yellow has been featured in a Ke$ha music video. The song Die Young shows off the Lumia 920 for a few seconds with a male making use of call functionality, while the artist herself reads an SMS.

Jessica Alba with Nokia Lumia 920

Jessica Alba has upgraded to the Lumia 920 and it appears as though she has gone with the red choice. We last looked at the model / actress when she was spotted sporting a cyan Lumia 900, so it seems she's been able to upgrade early, thanks to Nokia. It's clear to spot the new centred position for the headphone port, as well as the new Windows Phone logo being used.

We've seen Windows Phones in the hands of other celebrities, as well as being used in music videos and commercials, but it's good to see such a new handset handed out to those who could attract some attention.
