promotion

Nokia has continued to show support for its current generation hardware with numerous television shows sporting Lumia Windows Phones. The latest addition was a white Lumia 900 featured in a recent Homeland episode. Now we have German show Kreutzer, where a black Lumia 800 was spotted in an episode.

Humans and the undead can use Windows 8?

Microsoft decided to take advantage of AMC's popular television show The Walking Dead for promotion of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system. A Windows 8 advertisement was spotted in the season premier, during a break within the first half hour of the programme.

Microsoft has kicked off a rather aggressive Surface marketing campaign with promotion material being erected in a number of cities in the US. San Francisco is the latest host with an array of photos being sent in from a Windows Phone Central reader. As one can see from the photos, the software giant is making the most of the infrastructure to apply advertising almost everywhere.

It seems once all the screens and display units were full, they then turned their attention to the floor. We previously covered Surface advertising at public transport links in New York and Washington DC. Head on past the break for more shots of the action in San Francisco.

Microsoft's Surface advertising campaign appears to be in more public locations than first believed, thanks to a batch of photos sent in by Windows Phone Central reader Micah. The Windows 8 tablets that are being developed at Redmond have already been spotted in a subway in Washington DC, and a handful of photos were thrown up earlier today.

Now we can confirm similar adverts (with a pink coloured Surface tablet) are featured at Grand Central station, New York. As mentioned in our earlier coverage, the promotion material is unique, straight to the point, and effectively shows off the design of the Surface. Check out a few more photos after the break.

Microsoft Surface advertising material has been spotted in Washington, DC and thanks to Windows Phone Central reader Conan we've got some photos to show everyone. The advertising shows off the tablet's connectivity between the device itself and the smart covers with the "Click in." caption to highlight the user friendliness.

The advertisements show off light blue and pink coloured Surface tablets and the look of both designs is appealing. We're still yet to see Microsoft unveil its Windows 8 tablet family to the world, but the official launch can't be too far off with the company prepping temporary holiday stores across the US. So how aggressively will Microsoft push Surface?

The Windows Phone ESPN Radio app was promoted alongside other platform solutions in a recent Mike & Mike programme episode. The app itself launched on the platform last month for all Windows Phones to download and enjoy, and it's good to see it get recognised on a network programme.

Ben ("The PC Guy") Rudolph has continued to take the Smoked by Windows Phone marketing campaign across the states, and he's showing no signs of easing back with more videos being published to the Windows Phone YouTube account. We previously looked at a handful of new videos being added to the account and commented on how we enjoyed the new style, so it's pleasing to see the company continuing to refine and push the platform using this successful campaign.

With the active "Dare to Live" tour in the UK, which is focusing heavily on the number of wins the platform achieves, the Smoked campaign is relaxed to put more emphasis on how Windows Phone can make participant lives easier through a series of challenges. Check out two more videos after the break.

As we say in New England...this is wicked awesome

With the hot days of summer settling in we figured we cool down with a Windows Phone Fan. Literally.

We covered this little gizmo back a few months ago when our friends over at WeLoveWP.hk managed to grab a few during Microsoft’s launch. The fans themselves are your standard “hand fans” with some LEDs in them that can be programmed. Evidently they're quite common for promotions.

Simon Luk of WeLoveWP.hk was kind enough to send one over to us and we actually forgot we had it until the other day.

We’ll contact Microsoft to see if they have any available and maybe we can grab a few for you guys. And if not, we’ll tell them they should get more because they’re kind of awesome. Check out the video below to see for yourself.

Although some users complain that Nokia, Microsoft and AT&T aren’t doing enough for the Lumia 900, we can say we do like the presence of the flagship phone on our Xbox 360.

Many of you have noticed the occasional Windows Phone ad the pops up in one of the Xbox 360’s Home screen Tiles. When you click on it, you’re greeted with the image, which you see above, promoting the Lumia 900. What’s more, if you click on it and follow the directions, you can download and unlock a free Lumia 900 theme and Gamer Pic.

The Xbox 360 Windows Phone Theme feat. the Lumia 900

The theme is fairly basic—white with a Lumia 900 dropping in the background and “Windows Phone” emblazoned—but it’s effective and we like it quite a lot. The Gamer Pic is a lot more basic with just a black box and “Windows Phone” being displayed. At least it sticks out.

Combined with some of those free Windows Phone avatar props, our Xbox 360 is all about the Lumia 900 and Windows Phone, which is a pretty neat combo. Not bad Microsoft, not bad at all. As to how you can get these freebies, you'll just have to check your Xbox 360 and grab it when you see it (US residents only since it's an AT&T tie in).

We brought you the news, even before it was official, that T-Mobile and Nokia were teaming up here in the US for Batman the Dark Knight Rises promotion. The promo involves specially crafted Lumia 710 Xpress-on covers in cyan, magenta, yellow, black or white and feature the iconic Batman logo.

Nokia has now officially announced the availability and details of the promotion and we like what we hear:

  • The promotion will run exclusively at T-Mobile stores from June 20 – July 31, during which customers can pick up their covers in T-Mobile stores
  • TDKR Xpress-On covers are free to existing Nokia Lumia 710 customers, as well as with the purchase of a new Nokia Lumia 710
  • Learn more about the exciting 4G Nokia Lumia 710 Windows Phone and the TDKR Xpress-On cover offer here:  www.nokiausa.com/us-en/thedarkknightrises

What's more if you tweet the hashtag #Lumia710NYC starting on June 20th, you'll be eligible to win a ticket  to the US World Premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in NYC on July 16.  But really, how cool is it if you already own a Lumia  710 on T-Mobile you can evidently walk in and pick one of these bad boys up for free?

Don't have a 710 yet? Now through the end of July and after a $50 mail-in-rebate you can get T-Mo's Lumia device for free on contract. Not a bad deal at all. And besides this T-Mobile offering there is the Dark Knight Rises app from Nokia to complete the movie experience. Read our T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 review right here if you're thinking about buying this phone--we rank it rather highly.

So the question we have for you of course is which color are you going to get?

Well, well, well. Would you look at that? An extremely attractive upcoming title from Ubisoft was unveiled yesterday with a handful of trailers being released on the web. The above introduction trailer gives us a tease at the foundations of Watch Dogs without revealing much at all (be sure to look at the gameplay video for more details).

But this is Windows Phone Central, so we have to tie in Windows Phone somewhere regarding this console and PC title, right? Correct, check out the above trailer and be sure to pay close attention at 2:14 onwards. You'll witness the camera pan out revealing what appears to be a Windows Phone. Take a look at our still image below for a clearer view of the time in the system tray and "more apps" arrow.

While not major news, and the smartphone used in the game video demonstration sports a grid layout of app icons, it's a little something to wrap up an eventful Microsoft appearance at E3.

Thanks to Mark, Xavier and Ronny for the tips!

Campaign Live has reported Nokia signing a product placement deal with UK television soap opera Hollyoaks, that will see Lumia Windows Phones being used and promoted in a number of episodes. The show will have characters using the Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones with Monster Purity headphones. The village bus stop will also sport Lumia advertisements, starting from July.

As well as the TV promotion, Lumia Windows Phones will be displayed on other platforms that stream the programme, including the Channel 4 website which will reportedly see the devices come to life with two Hollyoaks characters tweeting their on-screen personality. The deal is set to last for an initial four-month period. John Nichols, head of marketing at Nokia UK, had the following to say on the deal:

"This partnership is another example of how we are pushing the Lumia brand in new innovative ways, with a human approach across multiple platforms."

This is a superb move by Nokia as the show is popular with a strong young audience, something the company has admitted it needs to target to rejuvenate the brand.

The Sunday Times, a popular UK Sunday broadsheet newspaper, has featured the Lumia 900 and Windows Phone in its "Supersize Shakers of Apple's Tree" test bench, along with the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, Motorola RAZR MAXX and Sony Xperia P. Each handset was rated 'best' for a number of factors, including value, battery life and operating system.

Which did the Lumia 900 and Windows Phone take? We think you could take a good guess - the operating system.

Not only did we take the 'best operating system' title, but the Lumia 900 was also given four stars, which was also the case with the Galaxy S III and One X. In the short description, The Sunday Times noted that the Windows Phone system is slicker than Android, though it is well known to have fewer apps.

The 900 has recently launched in the UK, and is available at Phones 4u, Carphone Warehouse, Clove and Amazon.

The Smoked by Windows Phone challenge, the popular marketing campaign that was born back at CES 2012, has made its way to Toronto, Canada. The public are challenged by the Windows Phone team to see if their smartphone can beat Microsoft's mobile OS and pocket $100. As usual, these challenges include common tasks such as uploading a photo to Facebook.

Windows Phone has been steadily growing in reach when it comes to Canada. The 4G Radar and Lumia 900 are both available to take advantage of faster network speeds, and carriers are supporting the platform with stocking a number of devices. But we've yet to see a strong push by Nokia or Microsoft so it's good to see such marketing ongoing.

If you wish to check out the Windows Phone challenge, here are the event locations for the next few days:

  • May 25: Yonge and Eglington - 12pm-8pm
  • May 26: The Danforth - 10am-6pm
  • May 27: Yonge and Dundas - 11am-5pm

Thanks, Charles, for sending in the photos!

The Lumia 900 has been featured as "The Networker" in the latest issue of to Entrepreneur Magazine, a publication covering small businesses, startups and the like. As one can see with the above photo, the Lumia 900 is praised for its design, SkyDrive integration, LTE speeds, collection of Microsoft apps, and how it "looks like a toy".

Unfortunately, no mention of Nokia OEM apps is present, nor how the Windows Phone has won numerous awards. Still, it's great to see the Lumia 900 (and Windows Phone for that matter) rated up there with the iPhone, Motorola Droid 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note in a respectable magazine.

Check out a closer shot of the page after the break. Thanks Teddy for sending the photos in!

Looks like the Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T is starting to get that second bounce in advertising. Today on Extra (pop news entertainment show), host Mario Lopez and Microsoft's Margaret Arakawa were talking up the svelte flagship Windows Phone.

During the 60-second segment Mario and Margaret demonstrated the photo app and Facebook tagging/upload capability which we're thinking is always a strong selling point of the OS (especially with that massive social networking being front and center in the news this week). Mario also talks up being organized and how easy it is with Windows Phone.

The phone used was the vibrant and eye-catching Cyan Lumia 900, always a great choice for demonstrating the device to woo potential new users. Extra announced that they will be giving away no less than 10 Nokia Lumia 900s plus 6-months of AT&T service which is a good deal if you're not already on the national carrier..

Finally, to top it all off they gave away dozens of 900's with the same 6-months of free service to all of those lucky folks surrounding them during the segment.

This kind of promotion is unbeatable and the exact kind of exposure the phone needs to get into the mainstream mindset. Hopefully we'll see it pay off as a substantial increase in market share in a few months from now.

While our Windows Phones are busy smoking the competition they may need something to blow away all that fiery aftermath, so it only makes sense to have a special fan for the occasion.

Microsoft Hong Kong has evidently commissioned a limited number of special portable fans just for these situations but they have a little trick up their sleeve. As you can see in the images above and the video below, when the fan runs an electric banner scrolls around the blades with "Windows Phone" and "Simply faster".

As we're fans of all things geeky, we're very impressed and think it's a brilliant little promotion tool.

Our friends at the Hong Kong site We Love Windows Phone (www.welovewp.hk) managed to get their hands on a shipment of these little bad boys and are planning on giving them out to some lucky people (and yes, worldwide shipment is an option). So you'll want to head to their site and maybe even give 'em a "Like" on their Facebook page to learn of the details as soon as they publish them.

Pretty cool Microsoft, pretty cool.

Nokia has been a relatively busy bee when it comes to promotion, especially when you consider the scale of their global campaign. We've now got some photos of the advertising madness in action at New York subway stations and the promotion material appears to be everywhere. The Smartphone Beta Test is being slapped on walls, pillars and even staircases with the recently launched AT&T Lumia 900 by its side.

As well as this advertising push, we've also had a live performance by Nicki Minaj take over Times Square and the Lumia 710 launch by T-Mobile - you can safely say it has been a blast thus far. We've seen Nokia also take the "Amazing Everyday" to Madrid's Estación de Ópera, a fairly popular train hub in Spain, as well as handing out cupcakes in Belgium.

Taking a look at the photos below (as well as the remaining shots in the SkyDrive album) we can see that the advertising material is certainly eye-catchy and is perfect for those tired travellers who would give anything for their eyes to feast on some colours.

Check out the rest of the photos on Kamal's SkyDrive. Thanks Travis for the heads up!
