There's very little arguement that the Nokia Lumia 92x series of Windows Phones performs extremely well in low light conditions. The latest Verizon commercial, #takebetterphotos, highlights the Lumia 928's camera's low light abilities.

Touted as the "best low light smartphone camera around" the thirty second ad illustrates how well the 928's camera performs when lighting is at a minimum. Similar to the Lumia 920, the Lumia 928's benefits from the optical stabilization and Nokia's Pureview technology to improve photos captured in those dimly lit situations.

The Nokia Lumia 928 is an exclusive to the Verizon network and is currently running $99.99 after contractual discounts.

It was announced today that Nokia will be bringing “Amber”, a software update package that will coincide with Microsoft’s GDR2 update later this summer. We got a quick look at some of the new camera functions, which will launch on the Lumia 925 and then come to all Windows Phone 8 Lumias via an over-the-air update.

So what can we expect? FM Radio, up to 3200 ISO support, less noise, enhanced color profile, image quality improvements and more. One of those new features is of course the Smart Camera app that you see demoed here in our video. Indeed, we’re quite excited for this feature to come.

Nokia has updated their filter list on #2InstaWithLove app with the "Pureview" filter.  Likely in honor of all the news coming out of London.

The app, exclusive to the Lumia Windows Phone lineup, allows you to take photos, apply one of a handful of creative filters and then automatically adds the hashtag #2InstaWithLove to the photo, for sharing on your favorite social network.

It looks like Nokia has given up on trying to keep their new Lumia 928, destined for Verizon, hidden any longer as they have tweeted about a new YouTube video showing off its low light capability.

Filmed in Farmingdale, New York at Adventureland (a place that is just 2 miles from where a certain Editor lives, ahem), Nokia took the phone on a literal rollercoaster ride at night to brag about their PureView camera with optical image stabilization.

Needless to say, it’s impressive.

Today brings yet another glimpse of the Nokia Lumia 928. Whether Nokia's deliberately putting up billboards and magazine ads or they've lost control of their ad agency isn't clear (we'd bet on the former), they've successfully managed to build up some buzz without saying anything official. Just today an ad for the Lumia 928 popped up in Vanity Fair, with a link to Nokia's website for the image above.

"Capture the highlights" the ad implores, and though the Nokia page doesn't say anything about the phone's name, the image's file name certainly includes the phrase "Lumia-928". While the Nokia page doesn't spill any deets, the fine folks over at Engadget got a look at the ad in Vanity Fair (not really our rag; we're more GQ and Vogue folks) and like the billboard from this weekend, it touts the Lumia 928's low-light prowess.

Things are starting to heat for Verizon users as more and more information is coming out about the ‘Laser’ Lumia 928, an updated version of the Lumia 920. In our forums, an employee of Verizon (‘Honestabebread’) posted that “Easter time” was the release window for this phone, and now the Verge is claiming that the phone is coming in April.

The phone will reportedly feature an aluminum body (versus the current polycarbonate) and as a result be thinner and lighter than the current 920. In addition, the flash will be upgrade to a xenon-LED flash combo. Other features include a 4.5-inch OLED display and support for simultaneous voice and LTE (SVLTE) with a look more resembling a Lumia 720 (squared) than the current 920.

The Lumia 928 passed through the FCC way back in February, meaning the device should be cleared for release soon.

HTC has mocked Nokia's PureView technology and the rumoured 41 MP super-camera phone that's set to be unveiled this year. While HTC has produced hardware with great optics (the HTC TITAN springs to mind), we can't help but wonder if the company can outdo Nokia's progress. So what's the deal? Forget Megapixels. HTC is talking Ultrapixels.

The Guardian, no slouch when it comes to news reporting, is citing sources close to Nokia that indeed, the company is getting ready to reveal a 41MP Windows Phone dubbed ‘EOS’. Destined for the US, the high end phone is expected to go on sale in the summer (presumably around May).

Originally reported by the Verge, this is the second confirmation of such an inbound device on the cusp of release.

News of such a phone is expected to be revealed in a few weeks in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress, where Nokia has a press conference scheduled...

The biggest takeaway from Nokia's Q4 2012 earnings report is obviously that Nokia finally turned a profit after deciding to make Windows Phone its operating system of choice on its smartphones. But one tidbit that also stands out is that Nokia officially confirmed the demise of Symbian, saying that the 808 PureView was the last of the Symbian name. Amongst 22 mentions of Symbian in its earning report, a short blurb from the Finnish phone maker put their former platform to rest:

Nokia plans to unveil another Windows Phone, codenamed EOS this year, according to sources familiar with company plans. The Verge has learned that the device is set to include a similar sensor to which is found on the Nokia 808 PureView. The optics upgrade would further advance Nokia's imaging technology, as well as provide yet another high-end Lumia Windows Phone for consumers.

The Lumia 920 has a super camera, that much is already known. We've recorded some sample footage of a gig in full action to demonstrate the power of the Windows Phone, particularly in low-light environments. Now a band in Denmark has been filmed using a Lumia 920. The song being performed is called "Reach For The Sky," but the band itself is nameless for the time being.

The team at Nokia has published a new blog post detailing a brief overlook of PureView imaging technology and what's to come in 2013. Jeppe Christensen reminds us how it all began in 2004 with the one megapixel camera inside the Nokia 7610, but it's 2012 which has stood out for the company regarding its photography capabilities and technology.

We just reported this morning that the OS and firmware update for the AT&T Lumia 920 is sitting on Nokia’s servers, presumably getting ready to be rolled out. When software appears via Navifirm, it’s the finalized version and is handed off to the carriers for testing, meaning this update is near.

While we have detailed the OS update ‘Portico’ before with the HTC 8X (and it’s the same feature set here) it’s the firmware that we’re interested in. The firmware update (build 1249) will fix and adjust a few things on the phone but it’s the camera fix that most are curious about. It’s not secret that currently the 920 is a bit “soft” during daylight shots and so Nokia has fixed it up with this update and we have the evidence.

According to the latest rumor, Nokia has just cancelled its plan of showcasing new products at the upcoming CES in January 2013. Instead, the Finnish phone maker is now cooking up some surprises for Mobile World Congress 2013, about one month after the CES (Windows Phone Central will be at both events).

People have been expecting Nokia to bring up the next wave of Lumia devices, and probably more powerful Pureview goodies, for CES 2013. The month-long postpone could be a sign that Nokia indeed has something up its sleeves, and is needing a little bit more time to polish it. Let's just be patient.

Meanwhle, Huawei's first ever Windows Phone device the Ascend W1 is expected to be revealed on CES 2013.

There's a new Flickr page dedicated to the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone's camera.  Created by professional photographer Alex Efimoff, the page highlights photos taken with the Lumia 920's Pureview Camera.  The photos range from low light shots to macro shots take with the 920.

The images appear to be a collection of test shots taken by Nokia as well as images captured by Efimoff with the Lumia 920. The Flickr page also has an invitation to add your own photos and video clips taken with the Lumia 920.

Nokia shows off the Lumia 920 at the 2012 Photokina camera trade show

Nokia is busy making the rounds promoting the Lumia 920 Windows Phone and this past week they set up shop at the 2012 Photokina trade show. If you aren't familiar with Photokina it is the largest trade show for the photographic and imaging industries. The equivalent for smartphones would be the annual Consumer Electronics Show or Mobile World Congress.

Nokia jumped on the opportunity to set up shop at the Carl Zeiss booth at Photokina to show off the Pureview Cameras on both the Lumia 920 and Pureview 808. A demo box was set up, like we saw at the New York reception, to demo the low light performance of these cameras.  Nokia reps also demoed the image stabilization and how it improves video quality.

Although Nokia caught some flak for the misleading demonstration of the 920’s camera, we’ve always maintained that optical-image stabilization (OIS) is a very real and proven technology.

Still, Nokia has some catching up to do to prove to the world just how impressive the 920’s camera can be with OIS on board and as it turns out, the task is simple: just use it.

A Russian site managed to get a meeting with Nokia and to try the 920’s camera in a real-world experiment with the Samsung Galaxy S3. The test? Strap both phones to the top of a remote controlled car, and then drive it all over a bumpy rug.

An inside source says Nokia is trying to get to the bottom of the ad fiasco

As the fallout continues from the misleading video ad for the Lumia 920’s OIS camera, Nokia is evidently conducting and internal investigation on the matter.

The Finnish news site Helsingin Sanomat, one of that country’s major subscription papers and news outlet, is quoting an anonymous Nokia employee that the company is looking into what happened with the botched ad for the Lumia 920.

The Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone's Pureview Camera turned a lot of heads this week with it's very impressive low light and stabilizing features. The demo video and still images gave hope that a "knock your socks off" camera was heading to the Lumia Windows Phone line. But the video and still images have been dissected more than a High School science project with accusations that Nokia faked it all and the camera isn't as grand as Nokia would like us to think. But is this a case of bad advertising or a bad camera?

We think it's two separate issues and too many nay sayes are trying to mesh them together to make the Lumia 920 look bad. We believe this because the specs on paper lead credence to the camera's touted performance and most importantly because we've seen the camera perform up close and personal.

Introducing the Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView Technology

It was a sizeable day for Nokia, Microsoft, ourselves and consumers yesterday as we saw Nokia take to the stage and unveil the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 Windows Phones. Windows Phone Central was there at the front of the event, and as Bill O'Reilly likes to scream - "We're doing it live!" (NSFW), so we blogged it live.
