Go Kart 3D is a simple racing game for your Windows Phone 7.x and 8 devices. You race around a handful of race tracks in your go-kart trying to post the best time.

You do have computerized competition but for the most part, the clock is your opponent. Graphics are nice, controls are responsive but there just seems to be something missing with Go-Kart 3D.

One of the big advantages for developers on Windows Phone 8 is the ability to use new gaming engines to drive the graphics. Unity is such an example, and it’s used by many gaming houses for development. The problem previously was that developers would have to rewrite their games specifically for Windows Phone with degradation in performance and appearance. Between the time and the final product, most developers walked away.

We’ve been anticipating the first Unity-driven game for Windows Phone 8 for some time and that day is evidently upon us. Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore tweeted today that Drift Mania Championship 2 is the first game on Windows Phone to feature the Unity engine. The game runs for $1.99 with no trial and weighs in at 200MB.

The game itself is your typical racer game, complete with car customizations and head to head battles, but it also features the whole ‘drifting’ sub-genre where through controlled skids, you drift through turns. Doing so will get you points and doing it with flare even more so.

As the first non-Angry Birds Xbox game running exclusively on Windows Phone 8, Asphalt 7: Heat understandably had a lot of interest from gamers and some rather lofty expectations to live up to. Now that the downloading issues that plagued last week’s launch have been resolved, we’ve been able to step into the driver’s seat and take it for a spin. Is Asphalt 7 the best arcade-style racing game since Outrun or another trip down a one-way road in the wrong direction like its Windows Phone 7 predecessor, Asphalt 5?

I’m pleased to tell you that Asphalt 7 is not only the best racing game in the Windows Phone library, it’s one of the best games period. Head past the break to find out just how it impressed its way into my icy heart.

Speed Tunnel is a fast paced, somewhat challenging, nicely animated game for your Windows Phone. The goal is simple, race as far as you can through the tunnel and avoid crashing into the various obstacles along the way.

To help you along the way there are bonus items you can collect and a energy canon to destroy the obstacles. There's really not much to Speed Tunnel but if you're feeling the need for speed, it is definitely worth a try.

Barnstormer: Windows Phone Game Review

Barnstormer is a game for your Windows Phone that features Shaun the Sheep (from the Wallace and Gromit series). The game is simple and straight forward in that you control Shaun race through various obstacle courses for the best time.

Barnstormer has ten race courses that are progressively unlocked as your time ranks in the top three. Animations are nice, game play challenging and Barnstormer isn't too shabby a game for your Windows Phone.

Windows Phone Game Review: 3D Boat Race

While the Xbox Windows Phone game Hydro Thunder GO may be tops as far as boat racing goes, 3D Boat Race hopes to offer an alternative boat racing challenge.

3D Boat Race has three game modes, two steering options and you can customize the colors of your racing boat. The game has potential but Hydro Thunder fans shouldn't be too worried just yet.

Windows Phone Game Review: RoloRun

There is a decent selection of online games over at the Windows Phone Marketplace where you compete against other players. You have games that you compete head to head like Duudle, games where you have global leaderboards like Trine's Hangman where you compete for position, and then you have games where everyone competes at the same time for the highest score like Wordament. RoloRun falls into the latter category.

With Wordament you compete to solve word puzzle for the highest score, whereas with RoloRun you compete to see how far you can race Rolo. Every two minutes, a 90 second round begins. On-screen controls will let you race Rolo across a series of platforms that vary in size. RoloRun is a simply drawn up game for your Windows Phone that grows on you.

It’s a great week for Windows Phone gamers. Not only do we get a terrific new release, but the Deal of the Week is a game that’s never been on sale before. Need for Speed: Undercover, a launch title from Electronic Arts is finally on sale for $2.99, down from $4.99.

Now, I wasn’t much impressed with the more recent NFS title, Hot Pursuit – see my review. But Undercover isn’t bogged down with endless grinding or absurd difficulty. It’s just fast racing in beautiful licensed cars, as you’d expect from the series. Just look at our review; it’s pretty glowing.

Windows Phone Game Review: AE 3D Motor

The Windows Phone Marketplace has several motor cross games where you can hit the dirt roads (MotoX Mayhem, Bike Mania, etc) . But what about those who prefer the flat top? AE 3D Motor is a motorcycle oriented game for your Windows Phone that has you racing up the highway, weaving in and out of traffic.

You race for as long as you can without crashing into a car, truck or semi. The further you go the higher the score. If you like motorcycle racing games and have a few minutes to blow, AE 3D Motor isn't a bad choice.

Fulfilling our tradition of badly punned headlines, this week’s Xbox LIVE title is Asphalt 5 from Gameloft. And it's ready for your challenge. The weird part? This game was one of the "original 50" Xbox LIVE titles for Windows Phone, meaning it's like just 2 years late.(Seriously, it was announced in August 2010).

Racing games can be fun and Asphalt 5 should make many folks pleased with some punchy high resolution graphics of dreamy sports cars. Well, at least that’s how Gameloft is selling the game. In fact, it features over 30 cars including such beauts as the Audi R8, Ruf Rt 12, Ford Shelby GT500, Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.

The game clocks in at 109MB, so you’ll need Wi-Fi to install and it’s priced at a moderate $2.99. While that won’t please you “It must be $0.99!” folks we’re okay with the $3 price range for games—especially ones which have high replay value....

Xbox 360 Impressions: Jeremy McGrath's Offroad

2XL Games made a name for themselves with off-road racer Baja: Edge of Control for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. After that, they switched gears to mobile development for several years, continuing to focus on off-the-pavement racing games. Now 2XL is back on consoles with Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad for XBLA and PSN. After coming away bored and disappointed from another recent XBLA racer (Bang Bang Racing from Digital Reality), I’m happy to report that 2XL has a grasp on making a downloadable digital racer both simple and fun.

Offroad features five different vehicles types, from Rally Cars to Trophy Trucks. Before you head to the track, you’ll choose one of 8 livery options for your vehicle and then customize it with upgrade points. Experience earned from completing races or performing in-race actions like big jumps and passing competitors can be spent on upgrading your ride’s acceleration, top speed, handling, and breaking. Nothing too complex, but the customization options are appreciated.

Head past the break for our full impressions.

Windows Phone Game Review: MotoX Mayhem

MotoX Mayhem is a challenging motocross game for your Windows Phone. MotoX Mayhem challenge rests with keeping your motorcycle balanced as you navigate across a series of motocross tracks.  Five tracks to be exact.  Each with differing difficulty levels ranging from easy to hard.  MotoX Mayhem is a fun game and a nice time waster but some may find the controls a little on the sensitive side.  This gives the game a slight learning curve that could be a little on the frustrating side.

It would have been nice to have seen a trial version for MotoX Mayhem to let everyone try before you but overall, it's a decent game for your Windows Phone.

NASCAR Live making the turn on the Marketplace

If you follow NASCAR, check out NASCAR Live over in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The lays out everything NASCAR rather nicely on your Windows Phone with pages for News, Races, Rankings, Videos, and a page with links to NASCAR, Driver and Truck (team) Tweets.

Additional features for NASCAR Live include:

  • Live race details for both NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide tours
  • Ability to create a secondary tile for any race
  • Detail list of upcoming races
  • Detailed driver information.

Completed races will display the final positions for the drivers. The only thing I can think is missing is a map of each track that NASCAR races on and maybe live broadcasts (that may be asking for too much though). Otherwise, NASCAR Live is a fairly comprehensive application for your Windows Phone.

NASCAR Live is a free, ad-supported app that you can find here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

When you play every single Xbox Live game that comes to Windows Phone, it’s easy to become jaded. I mean, how many physics puzzlers and Angry Birds clones do we really need? Still, today I write about a genuinely exciting game that I can’t wait to play: Pac-Man Kart Rally from Namco Bandai. It comes out this Wednesday; and WPCentral has some exclusive details to whet your appetite.

First, a little history. Pac-Man Kart Rally originally debuted on older mobile phone platforms in 2010, including Windows Mobile and Blackberry. The title drew inspiration from Pac-Man World Rally on Playstation 2-era consoles, but was not a direct adaptation. In late 2011, Pac-Man Kart Rally received a serious graphical upgrade when it made the trip to the Android platform, exclusively for Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play handset.

Head past the break for the full scoop on Pac-Man Kart Rally's characters, tracks, and multiplayer!
