Music services are one thing that Windows Phone isn’t lacking in the app department. We’ve got the native Zune Xbox Music service built in, Nokia Music on some devices, Spotify, Slacker, Rdio, and Pandora (on the way). For fans of Rdio, the app just got a small update that should help appease subscribers of the human-powered music discovery music network.

Rdio Updated for Windows Phone 8

The popular cross-platform streaming service Rdio has just released an update to their app to make it Windows Phone 8 friendly. Microsoft has done an excellent job with their home grown Xbox Music service but at present it is still not cross platform and that can be a sticking point for many users.

Rdio will allow streaming playback through the web, a range of mobile devices and also though music appliances like Sonos. Read on to check out some of the changes.

Sonos the popular multi room entertainment system is a great bit of kit but the company has yet to release a official app for Windows Phone. Phonos seeks to fill that gap and allows you to control all the players and music services throughout your home. We previously covered the app and did an interview with the developer a while back if want to read our views on the unofficial solution.

An update to the app to take it version 4 has hit the Windows Phone Store today and brings with it a number of improvements.

Those of you who have just purchased a new Windows Phone 8 device might have noted that there are some gaps with regards to apps. Previously available apps are not showing in the marketplace and are in need of an update. One such app is the high profile Spotify offering.

The app was a long time coming on Windows Phone 7 and many subscribers rely on it greatly to get their mobile music fix. Even with the advent of Xbox Music and competing services like Rdio, Spotify still offers up a compelling selection, especially for those with specialist music tastes.

Xbox Music to be improved with Rdio?

Microsoft may well be looking to purchase Rdio, if what sources informing The Next Web is accurate. According to their report, Microsoft is currently in talks to acquire the San Francisco-based digital music streaming service, which would suit both companies should a deal be eventually made.

We haven't covered Rdio around these parts too much, partly because there are plenty of other alternatives that we're more familiar with (e.g. iHeartRadio, Last.FM, etc.). Still, we imagine for a few people in Australia and New Zealand who may want to try it, so good news for them as they now have access to the music streaming app.

That's the good news. Well that and there's been a Rdio app in the Marketplace for quite some time, meaning you can now also stream it to your Windows Phone. Which is all great except for the fact that the Rdio Windows Phone app is pretty awful, judging by the reviews in the Marketplace. The consensus seems to be that it barely works and is coded terribly, despite being updated numerous times.

So congrats on the new service and our condolences on the app which can be found here...if you dare.
