release dates

We’re still unsure about the next couple of weeks, but the drought of Xbox game releases for Windows Phone will definitely cease by the end of the month. Microsoft has made a rare advance release date announcement for a mobile game – and it’s a good one. At long last, Skulls of the Shogun from 17-Bit and Microsoft Studios will debut on January 30th for Windows Phone 7 and 8, Xbox Live Arcade, and Windows 8 and RT!

There is some speculation out there that has the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone becoming available from AT&T on November 11, 2012.  We can't really call it a delay seeing that AT&T has never announced a date for availability.

We report this with a bit of caution in that none of our sources have confirmed the November 11th date. We still are leaning towards a November 4th release with pre-orders beginning this weekend but for now, we see this latest rumor going either way.

While the AT&T release seems to have a moving window, luckily we won't have long to wait to see which date may or may not be right.  As always, if we hear anything more concrete we'll pass it along.

Mark your calendar, October is shaping up to be a busy month for Microsoft. Rumors have surfaced for release dates for both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

Okay... we've known for some time that the general availability for Windows 8 is October 26th. It now appears that on October 25th, there will be a Microsoft launch event for Windows 8 and the Surface RT in New York City. No specifics on the event as of yet but Windows 8 and the Surface tablets should become available at midnight following the event.

Well... it appears that March 18th will come and go with no new Windows Phone being released. While the rumors were strong and the stars seemed to be in alignment, neither the Nokia Lumia 900 nor the HTC Titan II made it to AT&T store shelves today.  We had already heard rumblings that the Lumia 900 may be delayed but were hoping that the delay wouldn't hit the Titan II.

In talking to the local AT&T Store on Friday (and again today), they were under the impression at least the Titan II would be available today (as were we).  We were also told by a local AT&T Sales Rep, that HTC told them late Friday the release date for the Titan II was still up in the air.

So what could the delay be? Is AT&T waiting for more markets to get 4G LTE? Is it there a production issue?  Plus you have to wonder if the delay on the AT&T 900 will delay the 900's release internationally.  AT&T is rumored to have exclusive rights to the Lumia 900.  Will this delay push back the 900's release on other carriers such as Roger's Canada?

Unfortunately, there are more questions than answers on the Titan II and Lumia 900. Speculation now has the Lumia 900 being available on April 8th/9th.  Could the Titan II be slated for the 8th/9th as well?

Hopefully both of these new Windows Phone will hit the market sooner than later.

While release dates for the Nokia Windows Phone have never been set in stone, the strong school of thought has been to look at early 2012 for the Sea Ray to hit the market. This line of thought was confirmed recently. In an interview with the Australian website WP7R, when questioned about the release of the Sea Ray Nokia in Australia replied,

"We won't be releasing a Nokia on Windows Phone until Q1 of next year. Can't be more specific than that sorry!"

This joins the long line of indicators pointing to 2012 that include Nokia CEO Stephen Elop stating, "We'll be shipping in volume in 2012" and Nokia tweeting similar.  We still have the where and with whom that has to be answered.  Plus it would be nice if eventually the Q1 2012 time frame could be narrowed down a bit.

Regardless, this latest blip seems to confirm that Sea Ray fans still a have a bit of a wait to endure.

Brace yourselves...

Remember that PocketLint story from yesterday that had "multiple trusted sources" confirming that Mango would be rolled out on September 1?  Well, according to Joe Belfiore, the guy who "runs the team doing Windows Phone 7 product definition & design," it's "just a rumor."

In a tweet this morning, he said so himself.  Now, this could very well just be some marketing misdirection on Belfiore's part, but it's more likely that we all just got some inaccurate information.  We knew not to get too excited about the prospect of a September 1 release, but with everything we've seen of Mango, and a glimmer of hope, we can't help but be a tiny bit disappointed that it won't be coming that soon.  But it's just one more reminder of how these things go.

This could well be looking into something that's not there and we're all reading far too much into the above tweet. But, it does seem like the best time for the release of the update and upcoming devices (remember the handsets we covered that were shown at WPC'11?). With iOS5 coming up as well as the rumored iPhone 5, this is the perfect time for Microsoft to provide even the most avid Apple fans with a second choice.

So, this could well be nothing, or it could be a solid hint at a possible date for Mango. What do you think? Sound off in the comments with when you believe Microsoft will bring us Mango, and if you reckon September (or prior, since they mentioned 'by September') is a solid time frame for the release.

Also of interest is once again the reference to "Mango" as 7.5, seemingly confirming what we've suspected for some time now.

And last but not least, the winners for Imagine Cup were announced. We'll just focus on mobile:

  • First Place: Geekologic (France) with 'Brainergy', physics puzzler that requires you to use various equipment to convert renewal energy sources to do work
  • Second Place: Close World Mobile (France) for 'Hilomi' focusing on environmental sustainability
  • Third Place: Team Dragon (United States) for their asthma game 'Azmo the Dragon'

We already understand that Nokia is fully backing Windows Phone 7 with devices coming later this year and through 2012, but their support for MeeGo was questionable with only a single device being launched. Now it seems as though the N9 might not be available in some parts of Europe if their website product availability checker is to be held for reliability.

You'll also notice that France, Italy, Germany and Spain are also absent from the list. Could we be seeing Nokia planning to bring only Windows Phone handsets to these countries? Shame if this becomes a reality. While I'm very much looking forward to purchasing a Nokia WP7 device (especially if it's anything like the previewed Sea Ray), the N9 does look like a smashing phone.

So fellow Brits (and European neighbours), would we be that bothered if the N9 is not available in the countries above (I believe I'm asking a silly question on a WP7 website but still interest could be present)?

It was earlier thought that the Verizon HTC Trophy would hit the market on March 24th but that date has long since come and gone.  We've also seen rumors that the release date would be some time in June.

Now, through a leaked Verizon Spring road map, it looks like the Windows Phone 7 device will should hit stores on April 15.  It joins a handful of Android devices being released by Verizon during April and, as previously reported, will be featuring the NoDo update.

No details on pricing have surfaced but we're thinking $199 with contractual discounts might be in the ball park.  We'll have our fingers crossed (again) that the April 15th date holds true.

While we all were getting excited about an October launch for Windows Phone 7, it appears the excitement will be over seas.

Microsoft's COO Kevin Turner recently gave a presentation on the new phone and in talking about release time frames stated, "October likely across Europe, November likely across the U.S.".

No explanation on why the U.S. markets will play second chair for the release. Maybe the wireless carriers need more time to "brand" their Windows Phone 7 device.  But as closed the WP7 system is supposed to be, should this be an issue?

Regardless of the reasoning, one can't help but be a little disappointed with this news. We can only hope that with the extra month Microsoft will have, they will be able to release a more complete Windows Phone 7 package to the U.S. markets.
