AT&T's Digital Life Windows Phone app lands in the Store

AT&T announced their Digital Life Home Security and Automation service back in January and over the weekend, they released their Windows Phone companion app, AT&T Digital Life.

The Digital Life Home Security and Automation service allows customers to remotely manage things such as your home thermostat, lock doors, turn on security systems, turn on lights, and monitor security cameras. The service is slowly rolling out to various markets with the service being available in 58 markets by the end of 2013.

Volt Link brings a little OnStar to your Windows Phone

Volt Link is a Windows Phone app that might appeal to the OnStar subscribers in the audience. While not officially affiliated with OnStar, Volt Link supports reporting of vehicle status, remote vehicle starting, and unlocking doors.

Volt Link also enables Bing search results to be sent directly to your car. For those driving Chevy Volts, Volt Link has the ability to find EV charging stations and sending their addresses to supported vehicles.

Ceton Companion App to control your Media Center now available for Windows Phone

Ceton Corp, who make some cool Media Center products such as the InfiniTV cable cards and the soon to be released ceton echo Media Centre Extenders have finally brought their Companion app out of Beta and into the Windows Phone Marketplace. The app is designed to allow management of your home theatre PC from the comfort of your own Windows Phone.

Where Microsoft does not provide, others step in to take up the slack. The combined PC software and Windows Phone app will allow for scheduling, searching and of course remote control duties. Media Center is a fantastic product and its great to see good solutions coming for Windows Phone users to connect up the two devices.

Microsoft's Mayhem Project turns your Windows Phone into a powerful remote control

With Mayhem, Windows Phone users can make a custom remote control for virtually anything

Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group has a little project going on that allows you to connect your Windows Phone to various services through a wide range of devices that includes your Windows Phone. The basic operation of the Mayhem project is creating and connecting a trigger reaction to a desired reaction.

For example, with Mayhem you can turn your Windows Phone into a remote control (using the Mayhem Remote app) for your computer to control a PowerPoint presentation or to control the playback controls for a video. Mayhem enables you to connect everything to everything else from the comfort of your Windows Phone, computer, Kinect, or even an Xbox controller.

Mayhem is open source, provided through the Outcurved Foundation, to allow developers and users to expand its capabilities. There's even a contest to see what creative add-ons can be developed for a chance to wing $3,000. The applications for Mayhem are endless and really opens up the potential of your Windows Phone. Xbox Companion App coming to Windows Phone, magically controls Xbox 360

With the news of on-demand TV content for Xbox 360 officially confirmed, Windows Phone owners might be feeling a little neglected. Don’t worry, guys, Microsoft hasn’t forgotten about us. In fact, watching TV on the 360 will be even more convenient for people with Windows Phones. That’s because Microsoft just announced the Xbox Companion App for WP7!

Ben Rudolph at the Windows Blog shares his experiences with the app:

"Finding Content: Just like on your Xbox, the Xbox Companion gives you instant access to the Xbox LIVE Marketplace catalog of games, movies, music and TV shows. I used it to search “Featured Content” and pulled up the X-Men: First Class.
Learn more about what you’re watching, listening to, or playing: Once I found the movie and touched the movie tile, the Xbox companion app took me to an info page that has all the related details about. And the content is really rich, too – for example, when I swiped to the “cast” page and touched an actor’s name, like star James McAvoy, I was taken to other movies starring him. From there, I could easily learn more about the other movies, their cast, etc. It’s an infinite road of interactive content.
Control & Play: Once I selected the content and hit play, the Xbox Companion flips into “controller mode” in which I could navigate my Xbox, or control video playback of your video. The best part here is that controls are virtually instantaneous – easily as fast as using my controller or a TV remote."

Microsoft has been promising stronger Xbox 360 and Windows Phone integration for a long time, and now it’s finally happening. The availability of the app, provided Microsoft advertises it a little bit, should help promote Windows Phones to Xbox 360 users, which can only be good. Speaking of availability, the Xbox Companion App doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but it should materialize sometime shortly after the Fall 2011 Dashboard update, which lands in November. It will of course be free.

Windows Phone App Review: WPRemote for Roku

Here’s something I’ve been wishing Windows Phone would get for quite a while: a Roku remote control app. It’s called WPRemote for Roku and it comes from indie developer Localyf. (Note that this app was previously called ROKUbox before the Roku company asked Localyf to change its name.)

“What’s a Roku?” you might wonder. That’s what I love about you, dear reader – your inquisitive nature.

New Ford mobile app demonstrated

They are like a disease covering social media realm, and CES 2011 was not going to be an exception. Mashable had a quick look at a demonstration for an upcoming Ford app on all mobile platforms (including Windows Phone 7).

Alan Hall presented, and quickly ran through what the app will offer users (owners of the upcoming Ford Focus Seden). From seeing what charge the car currently holds, planning short or multiple stop journeys, locating charging stations, pre-heating/cooling the car, and more, the MyFord app is a pretty nifty bit of kit. You can even post statistics and more to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, sharing with the world how you are doing your bit to save the environment.

Hoping the app will make the somewhat daunting switch from highly explosive liquid to energy charged cells less challenging for the average driver/car owner, Ford have created a more than useful tool that I’m sure will prove to be invaluable for owners of the Focus Seden – especially since mobile phones are rarely out of one’s hand.

Winmote heading to Windows Phone 7

Winmote 7 (or WMote 7) is a remote control application for Windows Phone 7 that allows you to access and control your computer through your Windows Phone 7 device.

In watching the video demonstration, WinMote allows you to control and view multi-media apps that reside on your computer. Granted my French is énormément rusty, but loosely translated the features include:

Remotely control your browser to access web sites
Listen to radio channels
Watch videos stored on your computer from your Windows Phone
Remotely control television viewers
View and download photos
Remotely control and view Powerpoint presentations
Running from what appears to be a Windows Phone 7 developer's unit, WinMote appears to run smoothly and interfaces nicely with the PC. No word on when or where WinMote will be available. It's an interesting application worth looking for when Windows Phone 7 hits the masses.

I am on the road a lot. As a result, I cannot tell you how many times I've wished I could download file from my office to my phone or check on some other data not available in the field.

With it, you not only can control your computer, you can manage your files, access and run any program, manage the processes and services ... heck, it could simply be used to see what is happening on it while you are away!

Jason Langridge points out a free little app for Windows Mobile that allows you to use your smartphone as a remote control for certain software on your desktop (like, WinAmp or Powerpoint). Looks like a neat (and free) alternative to the already popular Salling Clicker
