RSS Reader

The developer of the popular RSS Reader Nextgen Reader has announced on the official blog that an update has been released for the Windows Phone app. Version 4.5 includes numerous improvements, but the main points we walk away with is that plans for the app to continue to function after Google Reader is closed down are still in the works. More on this in a moment.

We've been in touch with the developer of Feed Me, the popular RSS reader that sports integration with NewsBlur. Unfortunately, we're told the service has altered API requirements, rendering Feed Me broken and unable to synchronise. While the app is still available on the Windows Phone store, users may experience issues when attempting to use it.

The other day Feed Me, a popular RSS Reader for your Windows Phone 8 device, was pulled from the Store due to problems the latest update created.

The developer burned the midnight oil and quickly submitted a fixed version of Feed Me for certification. The switch was thrown this morning and Feed Me is once again available in the Windows Phone Store.

The popular Windows Phone RSS reader Feed Me has vanished from the Windows Phone Store. Nothing nefarious or sinister in the works, just likely removed for damage control.

It is our understanding from the developer that the last update caused a few unforeseen problems and it was likely pulled to avoid further issues. An updated version has been submitted to the Windows Phone Store for certification and should be published shortly.

If you are currently using Feed Me without issues, be careful to not delete the app for it may take a few days before it becomes available again.

The popular Windows Phone RSS reader Nextgen Reader has been update to version 4. We last looked at the Windows Phone app when it was bumped to 3.1, as well as the release of Nextgen Reader for Windows tablets and desktops. This latest version is a big one. It's good to see such an offering receive more developing investment to push further on the platform.

The popular and positively reviewed Nextgen Reader has recently been updated to version 3.0 with a number of improvements (support for Windows Phone "Tango"). The RSS app, fully supporting Google Reader, now sports faster startup time and the recently released update squashes a number of known bugs.

A tutorial is presented to the user once launching the app for the first time. This guide walks the user through a number of features and functionality present in Nextgen Reader. As well as the tutorial, this version of Nextgen Reader also features a new subscriptions view.

What else is new in version 3?

  • Both flat list & folder level navigation support in final update. That is folders -> list of feeds -> list of articles (in collapsed view)
  • Read it later now known as Pocket
  • New tutorial at startup
  • Improved startup time and performance
  • New subscriptions view
  • Collapse/expand folders from appbar menu
  • Show all/updated sources from appbar menu
  • Support for favicons
  • Articles list with filters on top (unread, all) similar to mail app
  • New: Mark items older than a day/week as read and sync
  • Save to Readability (settings -> accounts)
  • Pin 'All Items' or 'Starred' tile to start screen
  • New live tile option (based on phone theme)
  • Customize update mode per live tile e.g. images on front
  • Post link in status update (e.g. sharing to Facebook)
  • Many more improvements and bug fixes

A pretty large update, which appears to be the norm when it comes to this app. As well as synchronising your Google Reader account, the app also recommends other feeds that are separated into different categories. You can download Nextgen reader from the Marketplace for $2.49 (£1.49), with a free trial available.

Feed Me removed from the Marketplace

For those not familiar, Feed Me is a well laid out RSS reader for your Windows Phone (here's our review). We've been contacted by the developer of Feed Me, forty3degrees, and informed that the Windows Phone app has been temporarily removed from the Marketplace.

"Feed Me will be temporarily removed from the marketplace within the next few days. Due to personal reasons I am unable to further develop or support feed me for the immediate future. However, I do hope to have a new version back online towards the end of the first quarter of 2012.Thanks go out to all of the people that have supported feed me over the last 10 months."

The developer is considering publishing an unsupported beta version of Feed Me until he can get a new version back on the Marketplace. You can reach out to forty3degrees through their website or Twitter account (@forty3degrees) should you need to reinstall Feed Me or voice your support for the Windows Phone app.

We gave you a sneak-peek of Fuse RSS reader just a few days ago and now it's live in the Marketplace. The RSS reader really wowed us due to it's highly elegant UI, of which you currently have three choices in designs: Ribbon, Ipsum and Square. The app designer, Rudy Huyn, also let us know that two more themes will be rolling out soon as well.

Some of the main features are:

  • Three Applications In One - Fuse has three unique themes for three different user experiences. New themes are already under development and will be available soon for free - Ribbon : displays your feeds in the form of ribbons, for direct access to information - Ipsum : a clear and clean theme based on typography, use gestures to manipulate news - Square : a dynamic and unique theme. Retrieve your news on the move with an unique and visual experience.
  • Google Reader integration- If you have a Google Reader account, you can easily import your favorite feeds. You can also import your directories in two ways : - a virtual directory that will automatically synchronize with your Google reader account - an unified feeds consolidating all items into an unique feed. Finally, Fuse is the only RSS reader to respect the sort your feeds, change it in Google reader, Fuse will be automatically updated.
  • Work Offline - Fuse allows you to use the app even when there is no internet connection. All data and images are stored by the application so you can download feeds online and use those later when you are offline. You can navigate among groups, feeds, subscriptions and view articles in preview mode without connection.

We could say more, but check out our early-hands on video to see it in action, or just download the free trial to give it a spin. If you like, it's a fair $1.29 to keep it. Download hit here in the Marketplace. Thanks to an excited-it's-finally-here, masterrachow, for the heads up!

Wonder Reader gets a Mango Update

The popular Windows Phone RSS reader, Wonder Reader, has been updated to version 2.0. The update makes the Windows Phone app compatible with Mango and includes these new features (for Mango devices):

Live Tile support: The tile will display an unread count up to 1,000 plus the latest headline and image on the back of the tile. The Wonder Reader tile is set to update every thirty minutes.

Pin feeds and categories for additional live tiles: Additional Live Tiles can be added to your Start Screen for your more frequently viewed feeds or categories. This feature is only available on the paid version.

Social Network Sharing: You can now share articles on Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live and LinkedIn.

The Wonder Reader update also supports Mango's fast app switching for instant resume. There is a fully functional trial version available for Wonder Reader (won't support the additional Live Tiles) and the paid version runs $1.99. You can find both here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

There are plenty of RSS readers on Windows Phone, but few look as good or unique as Rudy Huyn's (TVShow) latest.

Fuse is nothing short of breath-taking. The app comes with three themes: ribbon, ipsum and square and the toughest decision you'll have to make is which to use, since they all look so good. The app also supports Google Reader, Instapaper, Read it later, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and has the ability to generate unique QR codes to share an article with others.

We like the ability to search for RSS feeds instead of entering the address manually, the super smooth and eye-popping graphics, tutorial and just over all ease of use. The app will be released in a few days to the Marketplace at which point we'll post our full review. But right now, we're leaning towards calling this one of the nicest, smoothest apps we have seen yet on Windows Phone. A real gem.

Update: Price will be $1.29 on release. Visit the website for the app for more information: http://feelmygeek.com/fuse/

Yomomedia headed to Windows Phone 7

Yomomedia is a popular RSS reader that we look at a long time ago (feels like an eternity) for Windows Mobile. We are now seeing a video from the software developer showing off their popular reader for Windows Phone 7.

We liked the Windows Mobile version and the Windows Phone 7 version looks really good. It's just another reason these new phones can't get here quick enough.

A few days ago SBSH released a teaser video for their newest application, SBSH GoNews Touch, and today the software developer officially released the news reader.

GoNews Touch will let you subscribe to your favorite RSS channels, update them (manually or on a schedule) and swipe your way around them. We were able to test drive the beta versions of GoNews and found it to be a simple, straightforward application to keep up on the latest news, sports, financial news or any other of your favorite RSS feed.
