When we first took a look at Runtastic back during Fitness Month we called it one of our favorite apps on Windows Phone. Since then the app has gotten better, with recent updates bringing it on par with its iOS and Android counterparts and great Windows Phone 8 support. Starting today you can now get Runtastic hardware – like their heart rate monitor – in the U.S.

If you missed the ‘Red Stripe’ deal a few weeks ago for Runtastic Pro (it was on sale for $.99, down from its normal $4.99), well, you missed a great offer for an impressive service for fitness buffs. The app recently went full Windows Phone 8 on us, bringing a host of new features and a slight redesign. Personally, we’ve been using it with the physical heart rate monitor and have been having a blast.

Even if you don’t run, it has general fitness features too, including weights, skiing, swimming and more. If you use Fitbit and or MyFitnessPal, it can easily link up to both services, giving you a comprehensive overview of your activity level and calories expended.

Microsoft kicks off ‘Red stripe’ weekly app deals for Windows Phone with King Oddball and runtastic Pro

Microsoft has a new trick up their sleeve to promote apps and games in the Windows Phone Store: weekly deals. Referred to as ‘red stripe’ offerings because the apps/games have a red boarder, users can purchase these games at a heavily discounted price. It should be a great way to move more inventory, so to speak, as well as highlight some top-quality apps or games in the store.

Running remains one of the most popular ways to drop a few pounds or improve overall health. It’s cheap (just get a good pair of running shoes), you can do it virtually anywhere, and people of all skill and fitness levels can start. There are just too many benefits to list, but if you’re looking to start running or track your current workouts, you might want to check out runtastic Pro for Windows Phone.

Runtastic is small startup from Austria (that’s the one without an ‘L’ and no koalas) that makes various fitness apps and accessories for all mobile platforms. Right now they’ve only got one for the Windows Phone Store and that’s Runtastic and Runtastic Pro. We’ll focus on runtastic Pro for the majority of the review and towards the end let you know the big differences between Runtastic and Runtastic Pro.

Several months ago the popular fitness app RunKeeper was pulled from the Windows Phone Marketplace. The reason was simple, the developer decided to drop support for the app and focus on other platforms. This opened the door for other fitness apps to step up and fill the gap.

We decided to take a peek at the popular fitness apps that concentrated on running/jogging to see what alternatives are out there. Plus Dan just joined a fitness center and is looking for a good jogging app.

After reading user reviews on the Marketplace and taking a peek at the apps ourselves, we've narrowed the field to five. All five have similarities with online components and making use of your Windows Phone's GPS. One even adds a storyline and a bit of suspense to your workouts.
