Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Shopping Apps

Shopping. Everybody does it. Some enjoy it, some despise it but few will argue that making shopping easier is a bad thing.

Staples has released a Windows 8 app to provide customers quick and easy access to their online stores. You can tap into your Staples Rewards account and cruise through all the virtual aisles to find all your small business and home office supplies.

You can pin commonly used features to your Windows 8 Start screen, including an ink & toner finder, a printer finder, and your “lists” section, where you can create and share distinctive lists of Staples products, like “my favorites” or “recent orders.” With the snap view on Windows 8, you can set up a list of favorite features from the Staples app on either the left or right-hand side of their screen.  Shopping carts created from the Windows 8 app can be viewed or modified from other Staples.com sources (mobile website, desktop website, smartphone app, etc.) when you sign into your account.

Newegg.com has updated their official Windows Phone app to v1.3. The update fixes some minor bugs that were present in previous versions, as well as humorous component called TimeMachine, which is nothing close to the Mac OS program of the same name.

The Windows Phone Central Store is the #1 destination for all accessories and products for your smartphone. You may have noticed a number of articles are now frequently covering the deals and offers that are present on the store (be sure to keep an eye out for deals featured in the sidebar). We'll also start reviewing products listed more regularly to give our $0.02 on what's available from manufacturers.

A frequent request from our readers is for the store to be made available to a wider audience. It was both expensive and relatively difficult (if possible) to place an international order. Thankfully the team that runs our store (as well as the stores at our sister websites) has been working hard and now we're pleased to relay the news that it's easier than ever to place an order should you reside outside the US.

The chaps at Microsoft dropped us an email this morning to let us know that an international update of Bing Venue Maps is rolling out.

The update brings us over 2700 venue maps across 30 countries which predominantly are shopping malls. While the update may not be a huge benefit to us daily it may well come in handy for planning visits to new shopping centers. Google rolled a similar service out not too long ago. It's nice to see Microsoft keeping on their toes.

All new Venue Maps are now available through www.bing.com/maps. Simply zoom in over your favorite mall to enter the experience. You can also browse all the available Venue Maps and countries at www.bing.com/maps/venues.

Windows Phone App Review: FastMall

Here's a Windows Phone app for those who like to shop or who just hate getting lost in shopping malls.

Newegg.com--it's a geek's dream. It's also where we all go to build our own PC. Between their fast shipping, low prices, individual parts and even being tax-free here in New York (they're in Jersey, ahem), what's not to love about this place? Well, up until this morning you could have said they don't have a Windows Phone app. But now, my nerd friends, they do and it's great--smooth, slick and smartly laid out.

The app is Mango-ready out the gate, allows you to access your account and all your shopping right from your phone. But really, you want it for the ease of browsing their daily deals, right? Other notable features:

  • Comprehensive product specifications.
  • 1.7+ millions customer reviews.
  • Detailed item image gallery
  • Quick and simple shopping flow.
  • Simple and quick search function.
  • Search by category
  • Guided search
  • Advanced search
  • Sorting
  • Good for deal hunting: Shell Shockers, Daily Deals and Free Shipping.
  • All purchases made on Newegg Mobile are routed through Newegg's secure servers.

Sure, it has no Live Tile or pinnable subsections, so there's room for improvement. But as for the basics, we're giving it a thumbs up. Pick it up here for free in the Marketplace. Thanks, Ryan S., for the tip!

Ocado releases Windows Phone app

We're slightly late to the party, but Ocado (an online UK supermarket) has indeed released an app for Windows Phone. The advert found below, containing some humorous elements, walks you through not only a lamppost but the app itself. It looks awesome. Blowing the iOS, Blackberry, and Android counterparts out the water in terms of uniqueness and of course Metro UI.

As well as the functionality to shop, add items to your basket and arrange a delivery through checking out, the Ocado On The Go app features the following:

  • An entire supermarket at your fingertips. Shop for everything from food and drink to housewares, books, toys and much more.
  • Shop for groceries on the move. Place a brand new order or just add an item you've forgotten to your next order.
  • Works in complete harmony with ocado.com. Seamless syncing means you can start an order on one and complete it on the other.
  • Get your next order started in no time. Use Your Instant Shop to create a typical order for you, based on your previous deliveries.
  • Shop even if you're offline. Our catalogue of over 22,000 products is stored on your phone, so you can keep shopping even if you lose signal. As soon as your Internet connection returns, your order will update automatically.

Should you have any questions about the app, Ocado have set up an FAQ on their website. You can download Ocado from the Marketplace.

Thanks hwangeruk for the tip!

BlackFriday - Mango App Spotlight

Planning on hitting the shopping mall on Black Friday? Need an easy way to track the bargains from your Windows Phone? If so, check out the Windows Phone app BlackFriday.

BlackFriday is powered by the website BlackFriday.info that pulls all the deals they can find under one roof and sends them to your Windows Phone. The main pages of the app list news items, store listings, categories of shopping and a keyword search page. Once you've found a store or category you are interested in, the app will pull all the sales listings.

Tap on an individual listing and you'll pull up any web listing for that sale item. You also have the ability to map local retailers from BlackFriday and share deals with friends. The app will use your Windows Phone's location services to pull in deals within your area.

In just tinkering with BlackFriday it comes across as a useful app for the shopaholic and a nice utility to find your way to the bargains. There is a free trial version available that will give you a feel for the app but is restricted on how many bargains it will list. The full version will run you $1.99 and you can download it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

ShopSavvy was one of the first bar-code scanners to hit the Marketplace and it has quite the following, mostly because of its super "deal finder" capabilities. Sure, in Windows Phone Mango we actually have this feature built into Bing Vision, but ShopSavvy ain't half bad either.

Now with version 1.8, ShopSavvy finally goes to Mango, making it reach its full potential by giving it live-scanning ability. In addition, you can now pin new scans directly to your Start screen, which is a great way to (a) remember you wanted that item or (b) quickly check on internet and local prices to see if there are any changes.

The app's scanner is quite nice, using the flash when necessary and performing as good if not better than Bing Vision. We easily found the lowest prices for our items with little effort, although the local-mapping feature leaves a lot to be desired (despite being a good idea). Actually, one of the most useful features is the "Deals" area which highlights specials going for major chains like Target, Macy's, Best Buy and more.

Of course it's a free app and we're not too sure how it performs in other countries, but with the Mango update, it's well worth a spin. Pick it up here in the Marketplace.

Shopping Assistant hits the Marketplace

Shopping Assistant is a new shopping list app for your Windows Phone that is being billed to make your shopping fun and pain free. Shopping Assistant supports three languages (English, French and Spanish) and stores your shopping lists and created items on the Windows Phone to avoid the need for a data connection.

Other features of Shopping Assistant include:

  • You can create clones or copies of existing shopping lists to cover recurrent needs instead of entering the same data all over again
  • You can share your shopping lists via email to inform other people of the progress made or to just spread the word
  • Specify your own currency symbol and formatting options independently from your phone’s settings
  • Fast search through all your shopping lists and items
  • Theme friendly user interface with subtle animations

Shopping Assistant's interface looks nice and clean. Unfortunately, the only downside to things is that there isn't a trial version available for Shopping Assistant. There is an online user guide that can be downloaded to give you more insight into the app.

Shopping Assistant will run you $1.49 and you can find it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Best Buy app joins the crowd

The one thing I like about shopping at Best Buy is the ability to check in-store availability. The Windows Phone Best Buy app was released today that will let you check Best Buy's product line-up and check in-store availability while on the go.

The Best Buy app, developed by Chaotic Moon Studios, gives you access to the Best Buy inventory, weekly sales ads, and in-store specials. You can pull up product listings, check out user reviews, and check in-store availability to save running all over the place trying to find what your looking for. The app also makes use of your Windows Phone's location services to make searching for stores easier.

In just tinkering with the Best Buy app for a short time, I can see it coming in handy. But it would have been nice to see Reward Zone integration or the ability to purchase items from the app. Maybe, just maybe, these are features in the works for the first update.

The Best Buy app is a free application and you can download it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to sasa for the tip!

AmazonFresh hits the Marketplace

Windows Phone users have already seen the Amazon.com app and now we see the AmazonFresh app hitting the Marketplace.

AmazonFresh is a grocery service from Amazon.com for select markets to let you avoid the check out lines of the grocery store by shopping online. The AmazonFresh Windows Phone app takes grocery shopping to a new level of convenience.

From the AmazonFresh App you can shop our complete grocery and selected Amazon.com aisles, choose home delivery times, access your account, view past purchases, and place your order quickly and easily from your Windows Phone.

The only downside to the app is that it appears, for now, that the AmazonFresh service is limited to the Seattle, Washington area. There's no telling if or when AmazonFresh will expand but if you're in the Seattle area, the AmazonFresh Windows Phone app should come in handy.

You can download the free, AmazonFresh app here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks Jeremy for the tip!

It's always cool when "official" apps hit the Marketplace and tonight we have pretty big one: The Home Depot. Sure, they're not the first company that springs to mind when we think of smartphone apps, but truth be told it's actually pretty slick:

  • Search the store (all departments)
  • Make purchases
  • Store locator
  • In-store map (!)
  • My Account & My lists
  • Deals/Featured products

Yeah, that's not too shabby at all and the layout is up there with other apps like Amazon's. So if you like to spend time the Depot, you'll want to pick this up.

Available here in the Marketplace. Thanks, Amir, for the heads up
