streaming

According to CEO Glenn Britt, Time Warner Cable could well be in talks with Apple, Microsoft and Samsung regarding potential streaming video partnerships, similar to the pact it has with Roku. The broadcaster released a TWC TV app on Roku devices that enables subscribers to stream numerous cable channels. It would make sense for the company to be in talks with Microsoft, especially with the Xbox One announced and on the way.

While Pandora made a big splash when it came to Windows Phone 8 earlier this year, MetroRadio had been around for much longer offering access to the same service. Back then, it would occasionally break as it used non-standard APIs to access the Pandora library. That has now been fixed, amongst other things, with the latest must-have update.

There are currently two versions of MetroRadio—one free, one paid—and the free one was updated last night with the paid receiving the same update a few weeks ago. It’s not a minor update either, as the app has been completely re-written with a new, simpler UI.

We’ve covered SoundGecko before, the media project that Long Zheng is a part of and veteran Windows Phone users will familiar with. The app and service allows users to “flag” articles to be converted into audio format, perfect for those of you who want to “read” while driving or who’s eyes are just too tired. What’s more, the service in its basic form is free (though there is a paid option with more features) and it launched with a fancy Windows Phone app.

Now we’re excited to announce that version 2.0 is live in the Store. So what’s new? The app now features “stations” for easier content discovery. Basically, you can now follow specific topics of your choosing or even specific brands and websites (or a combo).

Good old Microsoft has released an official Live Event app for Windows Phone 8 devices that will allow users to stream tomorrow’s live NEXT Xbox announcement to their devices.

Microsoft has previously has such an app for their Xbox 360 console, allowing users at home to watch on their big’ol TVs but they didn’t have anything available for their Windows Phone lineup. Now, they seemed to have rectified that with the official Live Video Player app.

TVCatchup (www.tvcatchup.com) has released an app for Windows Phone 8. We previously looked at the app a few days ago and AAWP stated that it would only be a matter of days until consumers would be able to download and enjoy streaming television on Windows Phone - sure enough, it's now available for download.

Supertube for Windows Phone has been bumped to version 2.8, which implements support for HQ / HD streaming of YouTube videos. The functionality was disabled on all YouTube clients for the platform due to Google altering the access method for said streams. MetroTube was also affected by the change, but has since been updated to enable users to take advantage of high quality viewing.

Rdio Updated for Windows Phone 8

The popular cross-platform streaming service Rdio has just released an update to their app to make it Windows Phone 8 friendly. Microsoft has done an excellent job with their home grown Xbox Music service but at present it is still not cross platform and that can be a sticking point for many users.

Rdio will allow streaming playback through the web, a range of mobile devices and also though music appliances like Sonos. Read on to check out some of the changes.

There’s some good news, bad news brewing in the Windows Phone Store as some app fragmentation is now becoming a little more evident. Such is the case with the updated official Vimeo app, which was bumped to version 1.3 this morning, joining the list of updated Windows Phone 8 apps. The bad news is it’s no longer available for Windows Phone 7.

We’re unsure if this is yet-another-Store error, meaning in the next few days Phone 7 owners will be able to download the app again, but for right now, it’s exclusive for those with the latest and greatest handsets on the market...

Good news for those on Windows Phone 8 or just use Tunein Radio, as you can now download version 2.3 from the Store.

The popular streaming radio app was “hidden” from Windows Phone 8 users due to compatibility problems but we were able to now download and load it up. The app has not been updated for Windows Phone 8 in the sense that it does not have new graphics, fast resume, doublewide Tile or anything cool—it just “works” now.  We put works in quotes because we still find some stations are hit and miss, but the majority are there and do play.

Although Windows Phone users have Microsoft’s new Xbox Music service to show off to friends, some folks still have their favorite streaming services, with Slacker Radio near the top. We’ve always liked the Pandora-like player for Windows Phone so it’s great to see it getting optimized for 8 and a Windows 8 RT version as well.

The Windows Phone 8 version is not too different and current users even on Windows Phone 7 can get the update. The new version just allows usage of the doublewide tile with no advanced features like Lock screen wallpaper.

Xbox Music on Windows Phone 8

You can count on Nokia to keep on fine tuning their own apps, each version brings us a step closer to perfection. Today an update is heading out for Nokia Music, their free to listen music service.

The release notes for version 3.5 are scant but we suspect this is version isn’t serving up any new features as the release app notes still show the same features as in version 3.0 which we reported on back in July.

Beem, a Windows Phone app that enables users to tap into the Digitally Imported (www.di.fm) music site, has been updated to 1.3. Billed as being developed to become the 'best possible DI.FM client on Windows Phone' by developer MVP Den Delimarsky, the app has seen praise from us earlier in the year when we included it in our Lumia 900 must-have apps list.

We don’t happen to use AT&T’s U-verse service, which allows users to download and watch some big name TV shows on their Widnows Phone. The service is part of the whole U-verse package from AT&T and while the app only had some mediocre reviews, it was still a nice option if you had AT&T’s internet and TV package at home. And even if you didn’t have their services, you could still opt in for $9.99 a month.

But it looks like it wasn’t meant to last as AT&T is discontinuing the app effective November 20th for reasons unspecified. Perhaps it is because they have a Windows Phone version coming out and they don’t want to support both or maybe not many people used it—we’ll never know.

Source: AT&T;  Thanks, everyone, for all the tips!

Have you ever felt like adding your music to the cloud and being able to stream it anywhere, on multiple platforms? To listen to your own music library wirelessly? There are a number of options available, iTunes Match probably being the most likely recommendation, but they’re restricted in some way or another. Cue the introduction of Jukebox (www.get-jukebox.com).

It looks like the 26th will be a major day for Microsoft as Windows 8 gets released, Surface RT tablets reportedly go on sale, third-party Windows 8 Pro tablets become available, Holiday Stores open and new services launch.

That last one is the focus here with Xbox Music aka Zune Music for days of yore. As of right now, most of the core of Xbox Music looks to be just a re-brand of the current Zune offerings but Microsoft is building off of it. Some of those new features that will come with the launch is a free, ad-supported music streaming service and utilizing SkyDrive for playlists with cloud storage of music.
