Microsoft is making it cheaper and more convenient for consumers to personalise hardware. To join the deal that has been featured in Europe, Microsoft has unleashed a free Touch (including limited editions) and Type cover offer for consumers when Surface RT Windows 8 tablets are purchased. It's a limited time offer and has only just kicked off, but we're pleased to see such a bundle arise to help push more units.

Yesterday we mentioned the Microsoft Surface RT being on sale at Staples for $399. Just in case you don't have a Staples near you, it might be worth a trip to your local Best Buy.

We were tipped by Windows Phone Central reader Austin that he showed the sale priced pictured above and Best Buy matched the $399 price for the 32GB Surface RT. No guarantees but it's worth trying to save a few bucks through the marvels of price matching.

Thanks, Austin, for the tip!

Yesterday, we were moments away from posting a story about how the normally $499 priced 32GB Surface RT was reduced by $100 at Staples, including online purchases. Unfortunately as we were going to press, Staples changed the price back to $499, which is still reflected on their website. Curses!

But wait...

We have covered this story before: Microsoft made a special SKU of Surface (Intel processor powered) for China, replacing Windows 8 Pro with Windows 8, but pre-loaded with permanently licensed Office 2013 Home & Student. To many, not necessarily Chinese, this version is even more desirable than the stock Surface Pro. However, according Panos Panay, the leader of the Surface team at Microsoft, such region-specific SKU won't happen anywhere else, unless strong enough consumer interest is shown.

It’s “Patch Tuesday”, the traditional day where Microsoft tends to push out some major OS fixes and updates and while it used to be a big Windows day, it’s increasingly more important for Surface owners. That’s because the Surface, a work in progress, is constantly getting tweaked for performance and usability. Today is no different.

Both the Surface RT and Surface Pro have numerous updates queued up for installing, including a few for Office 2013. The bigger deal though is the included firmware, which once again will hopefully fix a few lingering issues some of you may still be having.

Sure, props for your Xbox LIVE avatar are gimmicky and they can be quite absurd, but we still love ‘em. We also love our Surface, so when the two collide, we can’t help but get a little gitty.

If you head over to the Xbox site and follow this link, you’ll be able to add the “Windows 8 Tablet Avatar Prop” to your collection. Yes, that’s right.

Since launched, the Surface RT tablet has always been sold only through two channels in China: Microsoft's freshly established online store, and Suning (a chain store for electronics, much like Best Buy). Now Microsoft is looking into extending the Surface RT distribution network, as the exclusive dealership with Suning expired in February 2013.

Microsoft has been incredibly coy with numbers the past few years. Especially when it comes to actual numbers for Windows Phone and more recently its new Surface line of tablets. You can’t blame them for not wanting to disclose numbers from the top of the mountain if they aren’t anything to boast about to begin with. Numbers we do get either come from inside sources or website analytics that we all piece together. That said, here are some numbers from inside Microsoft about the number of Surface tablets sold.

It’s Patch Tuesday, Microsoft’s semi-regular time to push out OS and software updates to our computers. Today is no different, and if you’re on Windows 8 you’ll get at least 13 important updates (83MB) and if you’re on Surface, you’re looking at 14 patches (38-118MB) and a firmware update. (Some of that will vary for you as different Office 2010 and Office 2013 updates are included.)

So what’s new? Well, the biggest news is that Microsoft has enabled Flash to work now in Internet Explorer 10 for RT. If you recall, Microsoft only allowed a few, specific websites with Flash to work on Internet Explorer 10 citing performance and battery life reasons. There was even a neat little work around that you could do yourself to bypass this. Now, Microsoft have reversed that decision, which they say is due to more sites becoming IE10 compatible.

Nothing puts a smile on our faces like an update and today’s winner is Skype… for Windows 8. Yeah we’d like to see a little more effort from the Skype team with the Windows Phone version, but it’s great to see Windows 8 get some love too. What’s new you ask? Read on and find out.

There are many, many perks to having a Microsoft Store near you. You get great customer service, crapware free devices, and some good deals from time to time. A relatively unknown benefit is the ability to create custom vinyl stickers for a variety of products and accessories. You can spruce up your Xbox 360 controller and now your Surface tablet.

The International Data Corporation has released a report showing an unexpected growth in the tablet market. Worldwide tablet shipments reached a record total of 52.5 million units in Q4 2012. This is the same quarter Microsoft chose to enter the competition with the Surface family of tablets, releasing the Surface RT tablet. But how did Microsoft perform in the first quarter of selling the product?

For those looking to pick up the Surface RT tablet your local Costco’s (Costco.com) may be the place to look. Yup, in addition to the Microsoft Store, Best Buy and Staples, the Surface is now listed in upcoming inventory for Costco’s (see image below) including the RT’s various options for purchases.

Users will have their choice of 32GB RT tablet without Touch cover ($499), which is the norm for that SKU but the real deal comes in the “packages” where the Touch cover is included.

There's a firmware update available for your Microsoft Surface running Windows RT. There's really not much to the update but is designed to provide system improvements to audio playback when in Connected Standby and provide additional capabilities for handling firmware updates when your battery is low.

The update also includes a handful of security and non-security fixes and updates for Windows RT.

You can check for updates on your Windows RT device by swiping right on the screen to pull up the side bar menu.  Then tap on settings, tap on Change PC Settings at the bottom of the menu and Check for Updates will be the last setting listed. All totaled, it takes about five minutes to download, install the updates and restart the Surface.

The VLC team has published two more mockups in a Kickstarter update post so those who are planning to back the project can see exactly which direction they're heading down. The project is to bring VLC to Windows RT and Windows Phone, which would prove to be a massive bonus for those on either platform who rely on the media player.
