With launch day and general availability of Surface devices set to begin in a few short days the reviews have started to appear. After months of speculation and mountains of questions about price and specs, we’re finally at the end of this saga. Microsoft have dished out Surface devices to the great and the good for some pre-release exclusives.

Surface represents a few key things for Microsoft, firstly it will be the public face of Windows 8, and secondly it is designed to showcase ARM devices and the new WinRT touch interface. From the moment it was announced this was going to be such a critical element for the entire launch of Windows 8. How well it’s received depends on not only the hardware but also the software. Check out our roundup after the break..

Microsoft has released a behind the scenes sort of video highlighting the Surface's TouchCover keyboard. Microsoft's first venture with a pressure sensative keyboard was back in 2003.  While designers thought is was cool, they didn't feel it was ready for prime time.

The goal was to develop a super thin keyboard that functioned like a laptop keyboard.  Enter the Surface Tablet and a need to have a cover that doubled as a keyboard.

Windows 8, the much anticipated PC OS, was just launched in China a few hours ago, although many are still waiting for October 26 - the fateful day. As we understand, the global launch of Windows 8 will be marked by not one single event, but a whole series of them. The launch will start in China (October 23rd 10:00am local time), and end with the US party on October 26.

Microsoft has begun shipping its Surface Windows RT tablets, according to confirmation emails that have been received by those who submitted orders. We've previously looked at delays and possible issues surrounding Microsoft's Surface pre-ordering process that left customers baffled not knowing when they'd receive their product.

We then covered the tweet that was published by the Surface Twitter account, which stated that original shipping and delivery dates will be upheld by Microsoft. No delays, always a confirmation consumers enjoy hearing.

Could these emails be also sent in error? Only time will tell, but we highly doubt it.

Thanks, Rudy, for the image and tip!

To celebrate the launch of the Surface RT tablets, Microsoft is giving away a twelve month Xbox Music Pass ($99 value) to the first 100 people in line at their local stores.

There is also the hint of additional Xbox prizes to be given away at the launch events.

Just follow this link to find a store near you and plan on arriving early. Curious is anyone will be camping out for the Surface RT.  If so, good luck!

Thanks, stmav, for the tip!

Surface street art hits Germany

Looks like the first confirmed sighting of the Graffiti art Surface ads have been spotted, this time in Munich.

While we have seen them in the US and France this remains one of the first to be spotted in another country. With Windows 8 and Surface about to be unleashed could we be about to see them go out to all countries where Surface has been made available for pre-order?

Even though some variants of Surface have already sold out in the UK, we haven’t seen any ads at all. If you have seen ads in your country (apart from the US and France) please tell us!

A lot of huff and theories have been laid out regarding those delayed shipping notices for those who pre-ordered the Surface RT. Customers have received an email noting that their order should not be expected to be fulfilled until November 2nd, obviously putting a damper on pre-ordering. Turns out of all the thought out reasons for the delay, none took into account the simplest: it was an error.

Update: Microsoft has since said the emails were sent in error.

Not sure as to the why but Microsoft has sent out email notifications to customers in Canada and the United Kingdom informing them that their pre-ordered Surface RT tablet won't be available until November 2nd.

The email's read along the lines of,

"Thank you for ordering on msuk. The release date for the preorder product has changed. The product listed below will now be available on 02 November 2012."

We saw that Microsoft had pushed back the shipping dates for all three Surface RT options for any new orders. The mystery here is that these email notifications are being received by customers who pre-ordered their Surface on day one.  Some of which were placed during the first hour.

Microsoft has just started its ramping up efforts to begin promotion of its upcoming Surface tablet. It kicked off in full with the Surface Movement ad that was aired during television show Dancing with the stars.

While many of us have wondered about the effectiveness of the ads it looks as though initial ad has scored high with consumers according to advertising analyst company Ace Metrix.

The Microsoft Surface RT tablet became available for pre-order back on October 16th and we've seen select model's availability (or shipping date) shift from October 26th to shipments not expected for up to three weeks.  We're seeing this happen in various regions and in some cases effecting all three Surface RT options.

Microsoft's online store for the U.S. Market is no longer listing any of the three Surface RT options as being available on October 26th. Shipping estimates range from "within three weeks" for the 32GB model and "1-2 weeks" for the 32GB and 64GB models that come with covers.

Microsoft’s Surface RT tablets have only recently been made available as part of a limited pre-order. The least expensive option, the Surface 32GB without the touch cover has now sold out in Canada too.

The UK is also showing stock of the 32GB device to be unavailable with only the two more expensive options being present.

With pre-order stocks already selling through its tempting to start speculation on numbers and success. Microsoft certainly hasn't mentioned numbers and are very unlikely to do so unless they have something big to announce. If they are seeking to create some excitement around availability, selling out of an option certainly grabs attention and with it comes some urgency to be “first” or not to miss out.

Microsoft is evidently getting creative when showing off the Surface RT. In this latest video posted to their YouTube channel, we get to see the device dropped 30" onto a hardwood floor. Well, we don't actually see it as what we're watching is the video taken from the Surface as it is sent to the ground.

As a demonstration of how well it's built, the Surface RT continues recording without skipping a beat. Of course we don't know how the display looks but since we didn't hear any gasps, we'll assume it's okay too. Needless to say, the Surface RT looks to be quite durable, as evidenced by Sinofsky's skateboarding trick.

Looks like if you live near a Microsoft Store or even a pop-up holiday kiosk you can stop by and get a reservation card good for one Surface RT come October 26th.

The info comes via our forums where member jdevenberg was given a pass from a Microsoft pop-up Store employee at Washington Square in Beaverton, Oregon. The pass simply reads that a Surface has been reserved and all the shopper has to do is bring the pass at 12pm on October 26th. This sounds like a good deal for those of you who are wanting to go and get one in the Store that very day instead of pre-ordering online.

The Surface RT is not quite out yet but with pre-orders underway and the pricing finally announced we tossed up two polls to quantify your reactions. Perhaps not too surprisingly the results are a bit complicated and we bet that has to do with the amount of choices now out there (and in the future).

Head of Windows Steven Sinofsky managed to take the Microsoft Surface out for a spin, and not in the way you might have assumed. Showing off just how durable the product is, Sinofsky took the Windows 8 tablet, which has just been made available for pre-order, and turned it into a skateboard. Yes, the head of Windows was literally riding the Surface.

What appears to be an extension attached to the underbody of the Surface tablet reveals four bright green wheels. We're not entirely sure how far Sinofsky managed to skate, or if it would survive a journey with someone of a larger stature, but it's a humorous example of just how well built the Surface Windows 8 tablets are. The company previously published a video showing some choices that were made through its development.

Although we know a lot about the Surface RT from Microsoft, there are still gaps in the finer details that you may want to know—either just for curiosity or because it factors into your decision on whether to buy one.

Luckily for you the Surface team to a Q&A session on Reddit yesterday and they answered quite a few question about the upcoming tablet. To help you sort through, we’ll summarize some of the main points…

The Microsoft Surface tablet became available for pre-order earlier today and it appears interest is high. The original listing for all three versions of the Surface, 64GB and 32GB with Touch Cover and 32GB without cover, as "delivery by 10/26".

It appears that the first shipment inventory for the 32GB version without the cover has already sold out. If you check the listing now, you'll see that the option being listed as shipping within three weeks.

The other purchase options still show the October 26th delivery date but we're not sure how long that will last.  You can find the Surface pre-order page here at Microsoft's online store.

Thanks, Ryan, for the tip!

Today has been a rather busy day with the unveiling of the Microsoft Surface RT tablet pricing and availability. Pre-ordering went live earlier in the US, while other markets followed behind. We've been bombarded with international Microsoft Store links from readers who are excited to get their orders in - so who can currently pre-order a Surface RT tablet?

Ever since the Microsoft Surface was announced there has been some discussion about its power adapter. That may seem like an topic to focus on but it is only because Microsoft appears to be borrowing a great feature from Apple: its magnetic power plug.

For those of you who don’t use Apple products, their laptops have a plug that “magically” sticks to the computer and charges via a tiny magnetic port. The benefit here is less wear and tear on the connector and if you accidently pull the plug or trip on the wire, it just pops off instead of dragging the laptop to the floor. It’s actually really nice.

With the Surface you’re going to have the same experience. In fact, the plug looks remarkably like Apple’s (they both have 5 prongs), which makes us wonder if Microsoft is licensing the technology from Cupertino [Edit: Turns out Microsoft has a patent on it]. Personally, we see this as a big selling point as once you go magnetic, you won’t ever want to fiddle with standard laptop power adapters again.

Too much or just right?

This morning Microsoft announced the pricing of the Surface RT tablet, which will come in at $499 for the 32 GB base price with the keyboards coming in extra. If you opt for a 64GB version with a Touch Cover, you’re looking at $699.

So far, reactions have been mixed as most people were expecting something more dramatic for the price (and those earlier $199 rumors of course did not help). We’re okay with the price because we know Microsoft could not undercut their OEM partners who would have surely bailed on making their own tablets if Microsoft was going to exploit their obvious advantage.
