Earlier today at a press event in NYC, Acer showed off a handful of new PCs they’ll be releasing over the next few weeks. The machines are mainly tablets and laptops ranging in size from 11.6 inches to 15.6 inches. But we know a lot of you are clamoring for a tablet running Windows 8 in the range between 7 and 8-inches. Turns out they’re closer than we thought.

According to data released by research firm Strategy Analytics, Microsoft has managed to obtain 7.5 percent of the tablet market with Windows 8 and Windows RT. Tablet shipping in general reached an all-time high of 40.6 million units in Q1 2013, a huge climb from 18.7 million reported in Q1 2012. Apple still dominates the market with 48 percent, but Android is close behind with 43 percent of the pie. So what's hindering Microsoft's advance?

Head on over to web retailers like Newegg or Amazon and you’ll see that the cheapest Intel based tablet you can buy running Windows 8 is about $430 (Acer Iconia W150). That’s not too bad when you consider the potential of the system with the ability to actually install desktop applications. But what if we could go lower than the $400 dollar mark? Totally possible according to Intel’s CEO.

HTC has always been a big partner of Microsoft. They’ve been onboard with Windows Phone since the beginning in 2010, but the history goes back deeper than that. They started out making devices for other companies (running Windows Mobile) and took off when they started to produce devices under their own name. With the upcoming ‘Blue’ update across a variety of Microsoft platforms it’s becoming harder and harder for OEMs to build a Windows Phone and not have a corresponding tablet running Windows 8 to complement it.

NPD DisplaySearch, a market research and consulting firm, believes that HTC is working on a tablet running Windows 8.

One of the more interesting Windows 8 tablets we’ve see here at Mobile World Congress is Fujitsu’s Arrow Tab. Featuring a solid 10.1” IPS “Super Clear Panel” display, microUSB, SD card expansion, 2GB of RAM and 64GB SSD. It even sports “the world’s thinnest Windows 8 tablet” title.

ZTE is not a name we are too familiar with and we generally associate them with more low to mid quality phones. As it turns out, they have plans for Windows 8 and tablets in the form of the V98, a 10.1-inch tablet running Windows 8 (x86) on a 1.8GHz Intel Atom CPU and 2GB of RAM.

And it's kind of awesome.

TRD (Toyota Racing Development) and Microsoft have teamed up to develop software that could provide the Toyota NASCAR teams a potential unfair advantage in races. The software (or app for those who enjoy using content from software stores) is called Trackside and will see tablet hardware deployed to crews, as well as in the cockpit.

Alan Mendelevich from AdDuplex, the cross-platform advertising network for developers, has been analysing data collected through the company's advertising API and has noticed some anomalies that could well be yet-to-be-announced Nokia hardware. So what could we be seeing at this coming Mobile World Congress?

Microsoft has again made its Surface Pro tablet running Windows 8 Pro available for purchase on its online store. The product has experienced stock issues since it was released. With the cheapest option starting at $899, Microsoft is certainly pinning the product as a premium experience with a rather expensive price tag. The original Surface tablet is already available with Windows RT, so what will consumers be getting with this new Surface Pro?

Nokia is set to focus on Lumia smartphones at the soon approaching Mobile World Congress 2013. We're likely to see more advances in the same product line, or not depending on whether we see a new family of devices announced. But what about tablets? Nokia was rumoured to be heading into the tablet market, right? Correct. But slow down, ol' chap.

This morning we posted Nokia’s brief demonstration of Music+ for Windows Phone, HTML5 and Windows 8. We expect to hear a lot more on this and other Nokia news in the coming weeks at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (we’ll be there in force to cover it), so we forgive their brevity on the new music service. Consider it a tease.

What’s not said though is how significant it is that Nokia is making their first Windows 8 and RT app.

Granted, writing an RT app once you have a Windows Phone compile is supposed to be easier. But writing a native Windows desktop client? That's a little trickier. That raises some interesting questions including just how large is Nokia’s Windows desktop team? Is it a 3 man crew or a whole group including engineers?

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, corporate vice president of mobile communication products at Asus, Benson Lin has revealed that the company is indeed considering Windows Phone. Unfortunately the employee also noted that such hardware has no timeline on when they'll be released to consumers. For Asus to be building Windows Phones would further add to the foundations of the platform.

Nokia is 'all in' with Windows Phone, but what about Windows 8? It was way back last Spring that we heard Nokia head of Design, Marko Ahtisaari, first let news slip of a possible tablet from Finland. Looks like those plans haven't completely been shelved as DigiTimes reports Nokia could unveil a 10-inch device in a few short months.

To celebrate Cyber Monday, Microsoft has the Acer Iconia W500 Windows 8 tablet listed online for just $399 - that's $100 off the regular price. What's different about this Windows tablet compared to the Surface RT? It's slightly cheaper and sports a full version of Windows 8 with its x86 processor. This means one can install legacy applications in the desktop app.

The Surface RT tablet was released last month, but Microsoft has remained tight-lipped about the support policy for Windows RT itself. The company has since released information detailing its declaration to support its initial Surface tablet for four years. ZDNet has taken a look at the new information provided to see what this means for consumers.

Ever since Microsoft first announced to the world their intentions to “re-imagine” Windows it has been a rather wild ride. Their new touch screen user interface, WinRT wasn't just radical for its looks, it ushered in a totally new apps eco system while simultaneously sending the Start Menu to the technology grave yard.

The changes to the OS ran deep and Microsoft had been busy readying Windows 8/RT to run on the highly power efficient ARM processors. Their plans for that became clearer when they shocked the technology world by announcing their own tablet computer, the Surface. With the changes to Windows came a new declaration that Microsoft re-position themselves as a Devices and Services company. They have built their eco system and the next logical step has been to control the hardware that uses it. The culmination of their efforts in re-imagining Windows and becoming a devices and services company can we seen best in one single product, their Surface tablet running Windows RT.

Good news for those that missed out on the initial stock of the Surface tablet, the US store is now showing them back in stock.

The popular $499 option that comes with 32GB Storage but not a Touch Cover had been missing for some time due to the hurry to snap up devices for pre order.

Surface street art hits Germany

Looks like the first confirmed sighting of the Graffiti art Surface ads have been spotted, this time in Munich.

While we have seen them in the US and France this remains one of the first to be spotted in another country. With Windows 8 and Surface about to be unleashed could we be about to see them go out to all countries where Surface has been made available for pre-order?

Even though some variants of Surface have already sold out in the UK, we haven’t seen any ads at all. If you have seen ads in your country (apart from the US and France) please tell us!
