Yesterday, a source within HTC announced that the company's plan to design full-sized tablets running Microsoft’s Windows RT operating system would be called off. The anonymous tipper stated that low demand for Windows RT devices and high cost are a reason for its cancellation.

HTC reportedly still has plans to release a 7 inch ARM tablet running the Windows RT operating system, but analysts are pointing at the company’s possible recent decision as a foreshadow for Microsoft’s future – I disagree.

Microsoft has been busy pushing out commercials that show their latest operating system can do more than just play games. The latest ad from Redmond doesn’t just put on a suit and tie to strut its work capabilities, it makes fun of Apple’s iPad in the process.

The commercial opens with a side by side of ASUS’s VivoTab and the world famous fruit tablet. Microsoft’s minimalist approach is very reminiscent of Apple’s commercials and makes it clear that this is a parody right down to the musical chopstick routine.

Windows 8 tablets are a great option for those wanting portable, compact options for their computing needs.  We've taken a look at the Samsung ATIV Smart PC and now we turn our sights on the Acer Iconia W510 tablet.

The Acer is a smidgen smaller than the Samsung or even the Microsoft Surface series, sporting a 10.1" CrystalBrite LED-backlit TFT LCD instead of a 11.6" screen. While the W510 may be smaller, it doesn't skimp on features.  The Acer Iconia W510 is a really nice option to consider if you're in the market for a compact Windows 8 tablet at a decent price.

If you've been on the fence looking for a deal on a Windows 8 tablet, Dell may have just what you're looking for. The price for the Dell XPS 10 Windows 8 RT tablet has been slashed from $449.99 to $299.99.

The 10.1" tablet comes with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 32GB of memory storage, 2MP front facing camera and a 5MP rear facing camera. You can upgrade the memory to 64GB (add $50) and add a keyboard dock (now only $100) when you customize your purchase. However, Dell is offering the XPS 10 bundled with the keyboard dock for $349. Bump the memory on the bundle to 64GB and you're at $399 which is still a heck of a deal.

We aren't sure how long this deal will last but you can find all the details on the Dell XPS 10 here at the Dell website.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips!

Since first being captivated by the beauty and excellence of Nokia's Lumia family of Windows Phone devices, people having been wondering if Nokia would follow Microsoft's lead by creating a Windows-based tablet, like the Surface. While we're nowhere closer to learning the answer to that question, what we do know is that Nokia had their sights on building a tablet back in 2011.

The 2013 Consumer Electronics Show is just now getting warmed up and we are already seeing a nice presence with Windows 8 tablets. While ASUS may not be offering any Windows Phones, they have announced three impressive Windows 8 tablets and a nifty looking Ultrabook.

The ASUS VivoTab (pictured above) is a 10.1" tablet that features an Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor. The tablet is 9.7mm thin and weighs in at 580g. The display offers a 1366x768 HD resolution. Other features of note includes NFC support, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front facing camera and ASUS SonicMaster Audio. While speculation has Nokia lifting the curtain on a Windows 8 Tablet during the 2013 Mobile World Congress, rumors on the tablet's details continue to surface. This go around it's the cover that is getting the attention.

According to sources, the cover will be "book styled" wrapping around the tablet that provides both a keyboard and kickstand. The cover is also rumored to have a battery built into it that can be used as a reserve power source when the main battery gets low.

The main battery is reported to have a ten hour capacity. There was no report on the capacity of the keyboard battery or how long it could power the tablet.  It's an interesting design but could the battery add too much weight to the mix?

A few days ago we ran our review on the Microsoft Surface and found the tablet to be an impressive, feature rich device.  The review generated a healthy number of comments, many of which had questions from our readers.  Questions ranged from customization curiosities to how well the Surface handled games.

In this follow up post, we hope to shed some more light on the Surface and answer many of our reader's questions.

There was a buzz in the air earlier this summer at Microsoft's Surface tablet announcement.  Anticipation built, and the excitement carried over to last week's launch with consumers hoping for an impressive device.

And that is just what Microsoft delivered.

After using the Surface for the past few days, our impressions of the tablet are good. The Surface is a well designed, comfortable to use, speedy little tablet. There is a slight learning curve but that was to be expected with a new operating system. While there is a learning curve, it's not too steep and shouldn't be too discouraging. If you are fortunate enough to have a Microsoft Store in your area, it takes the sales consultants just a few minutes to get you familiar enough with the system to get you started.

The Surface and Windows RT compliment each other rather well and the device itself is a nice supplement to your Windows Phone and Windows based computer.  If you've been waiting for an affordable, feature rich Microsoft tablet the wait is over with the Surface.

Update: Microsoft has since said the emails were sent in error.

Not sure as to the why but Microsoft has sent out email notifications to customers in Canada and the United Kingdom informing them that their pre-ordered Surface RT tablet won't be available until November 2nd.

The email's read along the lines of,

"Thank you for ordering on msuk. The release date for the preorder product has changed. The product listed below will now be available on 02 November 2012."

We saw that Microsoft had pushed back the shipping dates for all three Surface RT options for any new orders. The mystery here is that these email notifications are being received by customers who pre-ordered their Surface on day one.  Some of which were placed during the first hour.

The Surface RT is not quite out yet but with pre-orders underway and the pricing finally announced we tossed up two polls to quantify your reactions. Perhaps not too surprisingly the results are a bit complicated and we bet that has to do with the amount of choices now out there (and in the future).

The Microsoft Surface tablet became available for pre-order earlier today and it appears interest is high. The original listing for all three versions of the Surface, 64GB and 32GB with Touch Cover and 32GB without cover, as "delivery by 10/26".

It appears that the first shipment inventory for the 32GB version without the cover has already sold out. If you check the listing now, you'll see that the option being listed as shipping within three weeks.

The other purchase options still show the October 26th delivery date but we're not sure how long that will last.  You can find the Surface pre-order page here at Microsoft's online store.

Thanks, Ryan, for the tip!

We showed you yesterday our hands on video with the new VAIO Duo 11 from Sony and at that same event I was lucky enough to get to use the big brother of the Duo - the VAIO Tap 20 which was announced at IFA in Berlin last month. At first glance this thing just looks like a big PC with a wireless keyboard and mouse, but it has some secrets up it sleeve. With a built in battery, allowing for three hours of power, the Tap 20 can be picked up and taken wherever you like.

So effectively you could be working at your desk and decide to go and have a bath with the VAIO Tap 20 as company. I'm not sure I would recommend that option but it's up to you.

With an adjustable kickstand on the rear of the unit, positioning the device can be adjusted to suit your needs - or just lay it flat and have a HUGE tablet! The 20 inch panel offers crisp, clear images and a wide angle of view, as well as an HD web camera (maybe the bath isn't such a good option!)

Microsoft Surface advertising material has been spotted in Washington, DC and thanks to Windows Phone Central reader Conan we've got some photos to show everyone. The advertising shows off the tablet's connectivity between the device itself and the smart covers with the "Click in." caption to highlight the user friendliness.

The advertisements show off light blue and pink coloured Surface tablets and the look of both designs is appealing. We're still yet to see Microsoft unveil its Windows 8 tablet family to the world, but the official launch can't be too far off with the company prepping temporary holiday stores across the US. So how aggressively will Microsoft push Surface?

AT&T has big plans for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8

It looks like once again AT&T in the United States will be taking the helm for Windows Phone 8 and even Windows 8 come October and November. Windows Phone Central has now confirmed information about AT&Ts upcoming plans, including employee-training dates for the big launch. The info comes via two known and trusted sources who wish to remain anonymous to the public.

First up are Windows 8 tablets.  With Lenovo’s ThinkPad 2 officially having AT&T’s LTE on board, it’s not too much of a surprise that the mobile carrier will be looking to sell the tablets in their store direct to customers. We were quoted the $799 price-tag by Lenovo last week for the 10.1” tablet and we’re confident that you will be able to pick one up there come October 26th.
