Telus

Telus made some headlines for offering a free Xbox 360 with a new Windows Phone 7 purchase back a few weeks ago, but they only had like 100 and it was limited to Toronto. This time, however, things are different.

For four days only, December 15th through the 19th, people looking to get a new contract or upgrade to Windows Phone 7 will all get a free Xbox--across Canada. Though the stores may not have them in stock, they will ship them to you as an alternative means.

Of course in Canada, they have those crazy three year contracts, meaning you are really committed to them and that rule applies here to qualify. But hey, for a free 360, we think we might commit.

Y'all remember that 2016-SMS timestamp bug we discussed a few weeks ago? The one that caused all incoming text messages to be dated from the year 2016?

Well, good news as HTC has released patches for Telus, US Cellular and Alltel users (Sprint got theirs last week; not a peep though from Verizon yet).

Telus

Alltel

US Cellular

Remember, these don't play too well with custom ROMs, so best to stick with the 'Ziggy' patch.

Sure, this was an unfortunate bug, but three to four weeks isn't too bad for an official patch, we suppose...we mean in comparison to where we were a few years ago (Anyone remember the Sprint 700wx SMS debacle? That was like a 6 month wait!)

[Thanks to Gregory P for the Telus tip!]

Telus sure has an odd pricing scheme, at least for those of us used to two-year deals in the U.S. But hey they did get their hands on the LG IQ and if you sign a whopping three-year contract it can be yours for a low $99.

Only want to do two years?  That will cost you an extra $300:

  • 3-year contract: $99.99
  • 2-year contract: $399.99
  • 1-year contract: $449.99
  • No contract: $499.99

But hey, that IQ sure is a nice phone and we have to admit, we'd like to get our grubby mitts on it.  Featuring WM6.5, 1gHz processor and a 5MP camera, it's pretty swell.  Luckily AT&T has the eXpo coming very soon, once their shipping issues are straightened out.

Get the LG IQ now.

Another look at the Telus LG IQ

Need some more of that Telus LG IQ (aka the Monaco) we got eyes on earlier this week? Ask and ye shall receive. And shaky camera work aside, that's a solid looking phone. We could get behind the (optional) fingerprint scanner as the means of unlocking the phone, though we're still not sold on optical-type d-pads. Otherwise, those of you in Canada look like you've got a rather snazzy 3.2-inch WGVA slider with Snapdragon on your hands. Peep some video after the break. [Mobile Syrup]

Update: Loads more pics and thoughts from Mobile Jaw. (thanks, Mike!)

Behold, the LG IQ on Telus

We're gonna have to go way, way back for this one. In the Great AT&T Flood of 2009 came a leaked slide of the LG Monaco, a Snapdragon-powered, 3.2-inch touchscreen slider. And here before you is what that device, now known as the LG IQ, has become, destined for Canadian carrier Telus.

Gone is that janky-looking D-pad from the keyboard, and instead it features an optical mouse on the front face. Also on board are a 5-megapixel and Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro.

Question is, will we still see this on AT&T, as previously rumored? And will it launch (or at least be upgradeable to) Windows Mobile 7, if and when it arrives, as previously rumored?

Not to stir up too much attention, but the unlocker (Hard SPL) for the CDMA Touch Pro 2 is expected to drop sometime this coming week.

Like the GSM version, this will allow users to flash the much coveted custom ROMs onto their phones.  The 'CDMA Rhodium Elite Team' has been hard at work cracking this latest HTC device and evidently it hasn't been an easy job, so give them some thanks when it drops.

What is even better news is the expectation that a separate SIM unlocker will be released at or near the same time as the Hard SPL.  The will allow the CDMA Touch Pro 2 to reportedly work on any U.S. GSM network (e.g. AT&T and T-Mobile) as well as for flashing of different radio firmwares.

The Sprint Touch Pro 2 is already SIM unlocked for oversea GSM carriers (unlike the Verizon and Telus versions), but all CDMA devices are barred from U.S. GSM networks, making this accomplishment, if accurate, truly astonishing.

The Hard SPL (for custom ROMs) will of course be free but the SIM unlocker is reportedly going to cost a license of €14 (~$21), which we suppose is fair for such a bonus feature.

We'll keep you posted as soon as either are released!

Well it only took about 12 months but the Palm Treo Pro  (full review) finally caved in today and had its finicky ext ROM unlocked thanks to cmonex and the first custom ROM by CFay, which just happens to be one of the latest versions of WM6.5.1 (Build 23409).

CFay has also released a "clean" WM6.1 ROM, stripped of bloatware and tweaked for style and performance.

The Palm Treo Pro, designed by Palm but built by HTC, has much more in common with other HTC devices than previous Treos. However, unlocking the ROM files so new ones can be rebuilt has eluded many developers so far, proving to be as tough as Motorola devices.

And since we've heard nary a peep from anyone about an official ROM update from Palm, this is probably your only chance.

Users should be warned that this is in the very early stages of development and currently *only CDMA Treos* can do this, so let the dust settle before jumping, m'kay

Get all the goodies here:

A big congratulations and thanks goes to cmonex and CFay for their hard work.  Don't forget to show them some support via donations!

Review: Telus Touch Pro 2

We don't get out much. And we especially don't get up to Canada enough. And so we asked one of our Canadian readers, Gregory, to check out the Telus version of the Touch Pro 2. And Gregory knocked it out of the park.

So, after the break, check out his impression of one of the most anticipated phones of the year.

We've been hoping that after a couple of days Best Buy Canada would realize there's a mutant Touch Pro 2 on the loose, but no dice. So, here you go. The Telus version is now available for $249 and the standard 36-month contract. Good luck finding a square case.

Telus Snap $29 at Best Buy Canada

Yeah, it's pretty tough to beat the $49.99 Verizon Ozone, which is VZW's contribution to the HTC Snap line. But Canada's Telus network has done it. The Telus Snap is running $29.99 at Canadian Best Buys. Of course, that's with the Canadian standard three-year plan, and Verizon and Telus aren't in some international, cross-border competition, so we're kinda talking apples and oranges here.

If any of our neighbors to the north pick this up and want to do up a review, e-mail us. We'll make ya famous.

More on the Touch Pro 2 with a 3.5mm jack

Here's more from Mobilesyrup on the upcoming Touch Pro 2 with its confirmed 3.5mm headset jack that caught most everyone by surprise. And that leads us to a couple of questions.

  1. What's the trade-off? While there appears to be plenty of room on the bottom edge of the Touch Pro 2 for a headset jack, adding one certainly must change the internal design of the device. (That's Dieter's hands-on with the stock Touch Pro 2 at right.) And while the Telus version proves that it can be done, was anything taken out?
  2. Telus is the first carrier we've seen to add in a headset jack. Will anyone else follow? It's not a given that Verizon or anyone else will do so. (And if anyone out there can predict exactly how Verizon hack up any given phone, we've got a date at the track we'd like to take you on.) Again, that'd likely come down to the trade-offs.
  3. Is this HTC turning over a new leaf sooner than we thought? They've said headsets will come in future phones. Yeah, it's probably too soon for that, but who knows.

Regardless, we're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Congrats, Telus customers. And let's hope some of that headset goodness comes our way.

A look at the Telus Touch Pro 2

We'd heard rumors a while back that the Touch Pro 2 would be coming to Canada's Telus network, and those rumors solidified in the past couple of weeks. Now, here's a look at the upcoming release, courtesy of Mobilesyrup.

So whatcha think, folks? Out of all of the versions of the Touch Pro 2 that we've seen either in the flesh or rumored — Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, the AT&T renders and the stock European version — which one is looking the best, aesthetically?

We knew HTC would be pulling out some big guns this year, and it looks like they're going to be firing both barrels. The Boy Genius Report got some inventory shots from Canada's Telus that shows the Touch Pro 2 and Snap being launched as "world editions." That, for those of you more used to vanilla devices, means CDMA and GSM radios, for use, well, all over the world.

If this all pans out, it is a good sign that HTC is pushing even harder for the enterprise market. World phones are pretty much aimed at serious business travelers, after all. No word on pricing or availability, but stay tuned.

As expected, the Palm Treo Pro and Samsung Omnia are now available on Canada's Telus network.

The Treo Pro runs $149.99 with a three-year contract. A two-year deal jacks up the handset price to $400; a one-year deal pushes it to $500, and the price sans contract is a whopping $549, which also is what an unlocked Treo Pro costs in the states.

The Omnia is going for $129.99 with a three-year deal and reaches $500 without a contract.

Omnia, Treo Pro headed for Canada's Telus

Looks like the Palm Treo Pro and Samsung Omnia will be on Canada's Telus network, at least if recent newspaper ads (check out Page 5) have anything to say about it. [via BGR] We're not entirely certain, but the price could well be $149.99 for the standard 3-year deal. Interesting that the Treo Pro gets that much more of a discount than the Omnia, but then who are we do question our benevolent neighbors to the north?

Touch Pro on Telus - hope you've been saving up

It's bad enough that three-year contracts are the norm up in Canada. Now comes word that the HTC Touch Pro will still cost $299.99 — even with the full subsidy from Telus.

The prices keep going up (obviously) if you're not willing to indebt yourself to the carrier for the full 1,095 days. You'll be looking at $549.99 for a two-year plan, $599.99 for a one-year deal and $649.99 sans contract.

The Touch Pro is a sexy device, no doubt. Check out Dieter's hands-on video here. But the $300, two-year deal in the U.S. is much easier on the stomach than what our friends to the north have to endure. And if I were in Canada and had $550 burning a hole in my pocket, I might just hold out for an unlocked Treo Pro to arrive.

Telus' HTC S720 updated to Windows Mobile 6.1

Not to forget our neighbors to the north, users of the HTC S720 (aka the Libra, and a CDMA version of the Vox to the rest of us) on Canadian carrier Telus have a bit to cheer about as an update to Windows Mobile 6.1 has been released [via].

What you'll get in the upgrade:

  • Adds EVDO Rev. A capability for faster download and upload speeds
  • Upgrades to Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
  • Improves overall device functionality and stability
  • Adds new shortcuts for easy access to TELUS mobile email, TELUS navigator, Pocket Express applications

The larger implication is that official Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrades are still rolling out, albeit not as quickly or on as many devices as we'd like. But that's as much (or likely more) of a carrier issue than anything else. So you'll excuse us for taking what we can get. And there are always those back channels for less, er, official upgrades.

Touch Diamond Hits Telus on August 14th

We'd already heard the CDMA version of the Diamond would land on Telus in Canada “later this summer” and we also already knew the prices and specs of said Diamond. What we didn't know was the exact date. Well, now we do: August 14th, according to mobilesyrup [via engadget mobile].

Those prices and specs, by the way, are $149.99 with a three year contract scoring you EVDO Rev A, WiFi, GPS, 4 gigs of internal memory (sans expansion), a 528 MHz processor, and a larger 1340 mAh battery.

We wish we had more than sketchy rumors for the Sprint and Verizon versions, so for now we'll be just be adding to our list of things we're jealous of Canada for. ...and you thought that “Canadian Dollar” was the weirdest thing on that list.

HTC Diamond CDMA Specs Revealed

When we told you that the CDMA Diamond was going to hit Telus in Canada, our greatest fear is that it would drop WiFi support like the original Touch did. Glory be, that's not the case, WiFi stays. Telus has finally posted up the specs on the their version of the Touch Diamond and we are well pleased:

  • 101mm x 51mm x 14mm
  • EVDO Rev A
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • Qualcomm MSM 7510A Processor running at 528MHz
  • 256 ROM, 256 RAM, 4 Gigs internal (no expansion)
  • Includes Telus Navigator software and Opera 9.5 for the broswer
  • Camera is still 3.2mp, screen is still 640x480
  • The battery gets a big bump: it's 1340 mAh

All in all, the processor and RAM look like they're hefty enough to handle TouchFLO 3D, EVDO REV A + WiFi look like this thing will be speedtastic, and the battery is big enough to handle it all. Sprint, Verizon: get this on your network ASAP. Telus: ditto.
