During our recent interview with Nokia’s Chris Weber we asked whether or not the company would start showing off some specific features of their Lumia 920 (and other phones) in targeted ads. It looks like the answer is yes as Nokia today posted a new video urging users to switch to Lumia as the 920 and 820 are shown off.
As expected the ad concentrates on just a few specific areas of the Windows Phone 8 Lumia line: excellent photography, wireless charging and augmented reality (City Lens).
The style of the ad nicely juxtaposes with Microsoft’s own Windows Phone 8 ads with their “Meet the new Windows Phone 8 Reinvented Around You” message (see below) and we have a feeling the two companies collaborated to maintain that consistency.
Microsoft has just announced a new developer contest that should make things very interesting both for developers and regular consumers who use their apps every day. The contest, entitled “Windows Phone Next App Star Competition”, will offer up over $1M in prizes to 64 winners but it’s the top spot that should gain the most attention.
Should you win the #1 app, Microsoft will feature your creation on a TV commercial featured in primetime.
The way the contest is structured is very simple. Developers just need to have their apps published by March 5th and users will merely vote for their favorite app based on the ratings (“stars”) they give it in the Store. That means apps with 4 or 5 star ratings starting on March 5th will get ranked higher than ones with 2 or 3 stars...
Remember the Nokia "The Amazing Everyday" advertising campaign when it first kicked off? We saw a montage of clips bundled together to form an energetic TV advertisement. Now Nokia India has inserted some elements relevant to the targeted country (as can be seen in the above video).
We mentioned this yesterday that Brandon Foy had made a fan video for Windows Phone 7 that became rather popular and even attracted the attention of Microsoft's Windows Phone team. Microsoft was so impressed that they used the video as the introduction to the Day 2 Keynote Presentation at MIX11.
Joe Belfiore, Microsoft's VP over Windows Phone Program Management, also tossed out a challenge to fans of Brandon's work. Should the video pass 200,000 views, Microsoft will use the video as a television ad.
We bring this up again because a) the video looks good and b) the video count needs a little help. Plus it's always cool to see fan-based work make it to the big stage.
