Microsoft has made some pretty significant upgrades to SkyDrive, among them, one that adds capability to Windows Phone. The big announcement that Redmond is touting is that SkyDrive will now support Open Document format. While this is cool and all, what piques our interest more is the newly-added ability to post to Twitter using your Windows Phone and have the URL automatically shortened using the SDRV.MS suffix. This nifty little feature makes it easy to snap a quick pic and share with friends. It illustrates Microsoft's drive to deeply integrate Windows Phone with social media.

In addition to Open Document and Twitter support, the SkyDrive update also allows users to upload files up to 300MB using their web browser. The SkyDrive Team also reports that they "have some really big things coming soon." Hopefully that means some more stuff for Windows Phone!

Kinect Star Wars for your Xbox 360 was released just a short while ago and yesterday the Kinect Star Wars app for your Windows Phone hit the Windows Phone Marketplace. And it's not what you think.

You may be thinking that the Kinect Star Wars app turns your Windows Phone into a light saber or monitors your progress in the Xbox 360 game. Nope.

The Kinect Star Wars app is a social network app that will pull feeds from your Facebook and Twitter accounts, giving your social networking a Star Wars feel. You also have a Kinect feed full of posts from your favorite Star Wars characters.

On each of the Twitter and Facebook pages, you have button controls to post, view your profile, search and view the Kinect Star Wars Xbox 360 website. The profile pages breaks down your Twitter account rather nicely with pages for your account details, your tweets, mentions, messages, favorites and following/followers lists. You do have live tile support to pin your profile to your Windows Phone Start Screen.

When viewing your Twitter or Facebook pages, the Kinect Star Wars app supports horizontal view but in its own special way. We won't spoil the surprise but if you're in the mood for Star Wars, the landscape view won't disappoint.

The Kinect Star Wars app is a free app that you can grab here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

If you're just picking up a new Windows Phone, re-installing your favorite Twitter app or trying out a new one today (and for the next few days), you may have some problems logging in.

As happens from time to time, Twitter has changed their OAuth decompression method sometime last night and numerous 3rd party Twitter clients are affected. We're told by Scott Peterson, developer of the Twitter app glƏƏk! that it affects "...any Silverlight Mobile Windows Phone client that uses the non-PIN authentication, and doesn’t not expect a GZip response"

As a result, those devs will need to quickly make a slight change in their apps and re-submit to the Marketplace. That means for at least the next 3-5 days there will be issues creating initial accounts (if you already have Twitter setup, the apps will continue to work just fine).

Peterson also believes that Twitter could change the OAuth for PIN-based/Silverlight mobile clients as well in the next few days, which makes sense. glƏƏk! has been updated and submitted but it won't be available until early next week in the Marketplace.

This week we've been joined by Saleh Esmaeili and Nadeem Mardini from dots and lines, a small developer firm based out of the United Arab Emirates who are responsible for the Twitter client Carbon. We've managed to get an insight into how they view the development environment of Windows Phone, as well as a sneak peek at what's next planned for Carbon.

Head on past the break to read the full interview.

The popular Windows Phone Twitter app Rowi has undergone a major update. Version 2.0 brings a decent amount of enhancements, improvements and tweaks to Rowi as well as Mangofying the app.

Here are the highlights of the version 2.0 update:

  • Instant resume
  • Fast app switching
  • Pin tweets and messages to the Start Screen
  • Retweets are now included in the list timelines
  • Photo previews for tweets in timelines
  • Conversation views on tweet details page
  • Tweet details now show who retweeted it
  • Now Playing added to the tweet screen to let you tweet about what you're listening to
  • Image upload services through Lockerz, yfrog, Twitter and Twitpic
  • Toast notifications now display inside of Rowi and take you to the new tweets when tapped
  • New remaining character counter for new tweets or messages

And that just scratches the surface. You also have settings changes to make things a little simpler to tweak, layout changes to make things easier to navigate and read, as well as the customary refinements and bug fixes.  You can find the full list of changes, improvements, and additions over at Rowi's website.

The update makes a good Twitter client for your Windows Phone better. Rowi is a nice looking, well laid out app and if you're looking for a Twitter client, Rowi deserves a try.

There are two versions of Rowi available. You have Rowi Lite that is a free, ad-supported version that lacks toast notifications, live tile updates for mentions or messages. Rowi, which is ad-free and will cost you $2.99. There is a free trial version of the ad-free version available to let you try before you buy. The trial version lacks the notifications but is ad-supported (basically the Lite version).

You can find Rowi Lite here and Rowi here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks, everyone, for the tip!

Globe Telecom are celebrating the upcoming release of the Lumia 800 Windows Phone by giving one away for free on Twitter. Partnering up with Nokia, the carrier has a shiny new 800 to give away to a lucky Twitter user. So how does one enter this small contest?

Simply tweet @enjoyGlobe with your favourite Nokia handset and when you purchased it, followed by "I want a Nokia Lumia 800 from Globe! #GlobeLumia800". It's that simple, and you'll then have a good chance of pocketing your own 800 for absolutely nothing at all.

Be sure to get your tweets in now to be in with a chance of winning a free Lumia 800 as we're told it's only open for today. You can now also pre-order the Lumia 800 from Globe for just P1,499 /mo, which are expected to be available by April 16th.

Sure we talk a lot about Twitter clients for Windows Phone around these parts, but many of you also need a dedicated one for your PC. For that, there really is only one solution: MetroTwit. Yes, it's Metro inspired and Metro loved, which means you need it.

We've discussed this popular client before and since then, a lot of hard work, spit and polish has gone into the app, making it one of the most popular around. In fact, it just hit version 1.0 a few minutes ago and with it comes a ton of new changes, including:

  • Added multiple account support
  • Added support for filtering
  • Added new out-of-box-experience for first time users
  • Added ability to preview larger user avatars
  • Added undo tweet functionality
  • Added Twitter events support for user follows, list membership and tweet favorites
  • ...and much, much more.

You can download the new free, ad-supported version right here from their site and read the version 1.0 changelog here.

What's more, to celebrate this huge day, we've teamed up with the MetroTwit devs to give away 10 "Plus" licenses ($16 value) which will allow you those multiple accounts and no ads. Ka-ching.

Sound good? All you have to do is comment on this post and tell us why you want MetroTwit Plus. We'll randomly select 10 of you to get the free license.

You have 24 hours....go!

Ben (the "PC Guy") Rudolph has publicly addressed the disappointment of Sahas Katta, who felt slighted when the Microsoft employee he beat in the Smoked by Windows Phone challenge refused to accept defeat and provide him with his prize - a limited edition laptop worth $1,000.

Rudolph has apologised to Katta via Twitter and has stated he has a Windows Phone and the laptop prize for him. As well as offering a phone, the laptop and a public apology on behalf of the Microsoft Store involved, Rudolph also tweeted the following:

"I stand behind #smokedbywindowsphone wins (and losses) 100%...even when I'm not the one doing the challenges.  And always will!"

It's positive to see Microsoft at least attempt to set things right should reports pop up that their highly marketed challenges could well be staged. We'll never be 100% sure as to what actually happened, and have to take Katta's word for it, but shouldn't we expect some issues to arise when multiple employees are hosting a marketing stunt?

Carbon version 1.2 is now live on the Marketplace after being submitted twelve days prior. We covered what's new in this update previously, which includes video preview (on the timeline) and a new quote screen gesture (tap on a tweet with two fingers). As well as improvements made to the app (speed, performance, etc.), the team has also introduced a trial mode that wasn't present in v1.1 - this trial has limited functionality but sports no advertising.

What else has been patched in version 1.2? Check out the bug fixes and changes below:

  • Read It Later bug that failed to save links to Read It Later service
  • Timeline context menu bug
  • Camera share bug that did not select pictures from Pictures hub
  • Broken image upload
  • List Timelines on Quickline Bug where it didn’t load older Tweets when tapping on “More”
  • Minor changes & bug fixes with Live Tiles
  • Default Image service changed to Twitpic instead of Twitter(to be reverted back soon)
  • Quickline bug that did not load all of the lists
  • General cache, and storage fixes/enhancements
  • Smoother Timeline scrolling experience and faster image fetching

You can download Carbon (and the trial) from the Marketplace for $1.99.

We detailed the Carbon v1.1 launch this past weekend and one thing is for sure, you folks really like this Twitter client. Here in the US, the app is now #2 under the Social category and it's rocking 4.5 stars which is pretty slamming for an initial release.

It was noted that in the coming days, v1.2 would be released bringing trial-support and numerous other enhancements. Now we're getting a taste of that as the developers have posted a new video showing off their new "quote gesture".

We always highlight "smart" things around here at WPCentral and this quote/reTweet gesture is quite brilliant. We have a feeling that Carbon will have a very successful future on this platform with these kinds of additions.

Michael Stroh has published an article on the Windows Phone team blog about a competition they're running for those who are unhappy with their Android handset or who simply desire a Windows Phone. To enter, simply follow @windowsphone on Twitter, then tweet one of the following (US only):

  • Option 1: If #DroidRage is breaking your heart, tweet a "Dear Droid" breakup letter with the hashtag #DumpingMyDroid.
  • Option 2: If you already have a Windows Phone (or just want one), tweet why you love it with the hashtag #ILoveWindowsPhone.

Be sure to enter quickly as the competition will end midnight on Valentine's Day. Two winners will be announced once the closing date has passed, who will both receive a Windows Phone (might not be a Nokia Lumia pictured above), one annual Zune Pass, and one annual Xbox LIVE Gold membership. Check out the rules on the article, link below.

It's been a bumpy ride for Carbon, the popular Twitter app for webOS, to make its way over to Windows Phone. We had an early build of it a few months ago and since then the app has been polished and submitted to the Marketplace. Unfortunately, it was also rejected no less than four times causing the devs to become exasperated from the process.

Now, we're pleased to tell you that not only did it pass but it is now available. The app fetches for $1.99 and it is certainly one of the nicest Twitter apps on our platform. What's even better is the developers ended up submitting version 1.1 of the app, bringing even more functionality to the mix including the uber cool "inline images in your timeline". That feature means that if there is a pic attached to the Tweet, you can (optionally) have it show up as your scrolling through, giving you a quick-peek at the content.

In addition, you have TwitLonger support, font size control, everything is pinnable, background updates, read-it-later options and more, making this chock full of features.

We've been running v1.1 for the last few days and are very impressed with it. For those of you who are Metro-crazy, this is certainly your Twitter app as it has a very minimalist/font-centric UI design. Plus it has multiple account support which is something we need around these parts, so with that, we give Carbon a big thumbs up for Windows Phone.

We'd also like to announce that version 1.2 should be out within the next few days which features some scrolling tweaks as well as "trial" support, so hang tight if you don't want to purchase right away (though we think it's worth it).

Pick up Carbon here in the Marketplace for $1.99 and let us know in comments what you think. Check our early-video preview after the break. (Thanks for the heads up, Derek B.!)

Seesmic has come out with an interesting app that some of you will find interesting. It's a post-everywhere type app where you just fill out one field and send it off to the interwebs.

Perfect for those with multiple Twitter profiles, a Facebook account or two and even throw in a LinkedIn for safe keeping, Seesmic Ping seems to have it all covered.  What's unique about Ping though is the ability to add as many accounts as you want, allowing you to post to one or all per post. You can even share links and add photos with a thumbnail view with ease.

Even better, it allows you to write drafts for later, allowing the system to "auto post" for you at a specific date or time. This is all done not so much via the app but by using Seesmic's "log in" system where they basically maintain all of your accounts for you, much like their Desktop app. It's a neat little service and for those on the go who need to remote post, probably one of the best (and perhaps only) solution for Windows Phone.

We've been playing with the app and ran it through some test posts with no problem. We have to admit, it is convenient to use and to the point. Plus it's free so there's not too much to complain about here. The Ping service was recently launched across iOS and Android too so it's nice to see Seesmic giving Windows Phone the nod too as it came out at the same time.

Pick it up here in the Marketplace for free. Thanks, Amir, for the heads up

This is almost becoming a television soap script. CarbonWP is an intriguing Twitter client (popular on webOS) that's currently in the process of being made available on the Marketplace. There have been a number of issues in the recent past with submissions and the approval process, but the app has now been denied for the fourth time. Announcing on Twitter (as can be seen above) the developers are losing interest - and we can't blame them.

But hope is not all lost. Some of those who are looking forward to seeing the Twitter client arrive on Windows Phone got in touch with a few members of the WP team and now Brandon Watson (and co.) are looking into what's going wrong with CarbonWP. Here's hoping we'll see this app on the Marketplace soon.

Update (6:48PM MST): Social media notifications appear to be working for most folks now.

Windows Phone users are reporting that Twitter social media notifications – such as those found on your Me tile, under Notifications – have been spotty or (in most cases) stopped flowing to Windows Phone since Thursday (UTC-7). A cursory dissection of the communication between the phone and Windows Live APIs, shows that API requests for notification activity succeed but no actual results are returned. (i.e., the phone is working just fine.) Maybe it's time to look at grabbing a real Twitter app? (We've reviewed quite a few.)

Microsoft was asleep and therefore unavailable for immediate comment. We'll keep an eye on this and let you know when things are moving again.

Updated: as of 8pm EST, notifications seem to be working again.

Good news to anyone who loves the Birdsong Twitter client for Windows Phone as much as the next person, as Red Badger announced last month the arrival of an intern at the company. Joe Stanton, a student at King’s College London (studying Computer Science), will be heading up further development on the app, which has received little attention since the Mango update hit handsets.

So what should we look forward to see in the (hopefully) near future? Trending Topics (both local and global), ReadItLater/Instapaper support for tweeted links, as well as large-scale improvements to the push service. Sounds like a solid plan. On a slight funny note, it'll be interesting to see what an apparent iPhone user (according to the above photo) can bring to the app.

You can download Birdsong from the Marketplace for $0.99 (79p).
