update

If there's one area where have heard a lot of complaints on it's the WiFi function on Windows Phone.

The problem is a bit niche but it has frustrated quite a few of you ever since 2010. That "problem" is when the phone goes to the Lock screen, WiFi automatically disconnects. Obviously Microsoft had good intentions in mind here with power-saving as the chief concern. But recently, evidence and personal anecdotes seem to betray the idea that turning off WiFi (when not in use) saves battery.

Seems like the minor tweaks and adjustments for apps for Windows Phone 8 keep on coming, this time it’s the official Twitter client.

The update is now showing as version 1.3 for Windows Phone 8 while the Windows Phone 7 version is holding steady at 1.2. A quick scan of the changes doesn’t reveal an awful lot of changes so we’re putting this one down to some general tweaking in the absence of any change notes.

Windows Phone 8 is just in the process of being released and with it comes updated apps. Notably Nokia’s own apps are getting spruced up to take advantage of the new platform.

Yesterday saw an update go out to Nokia Music, its actually still showing as 3.5.93.366 but announced some new features with regard to the newest version of the Windows Phone OS.

MetroTube for many Windows Phone users is the be-all, end-all for your mobile YouTube experience. With a slick design and excellent performance there’s little wonder.

Here at BUILD we were able to catch up with the developers behind MetroTube (and the new Windows 8 Twitter app Tweetro) for quick look at the upcoming update that will bring some new Windows Phone 8 features, including doublewide tiles and a new preloading feature (basically downloading for offline viewing).

In addition, we got a preliminary look at MetroTube for Windows 8 RT, which we can confirm is now officially in the works for your Surface.

One of the big new features for Windows Phone 8 is the ability to finally do over-the-air (OTA) updates to the OS—either for big things or little fixes. Previously, we could check for updates but if one were found, you had to head home to your PC and plug in the phone to install (including performing a full backup). Now, things are more streamlined.

In an article over at Mobility Minded, details of the update process were posted, giving a look at what users can expect with these updates.  The updates are listed as manual or automatic, with the latter being downloaded behind the scenes and the former involving tapping in Settings to see if there is an update.

Details of features included in Windows Phone 7.8 have been revealed on Facebook, according to a post by Microsoft Italy. While Microsoft has released Windows Phone 8, the company's next update for customers with legacy hardware is still on the horizon, and we're unsure what's included. So what has been mentioned by Microsoft Italy?

Windows Phone 8 is to be formally released in a few more hours. But guess a whole lot of us care more about its little brother: Windows Phone 7.8. For existing Windows Phone users who aren't buying a new device at this time, Windows Phone 7.8 is the real savior. There's bad news coming from Chinese site WPDang though: it'll be coming late.

You can count on Nokia to keep on fine tuning their own apps, each version brings us a step closer to perfection. Today an update is heading out for Nokia Music, their free to listen music service.

The release notes for version 3.5 are scant but we suspect this is version isn’t serving up any new features as the release app notes still show the same features as in version 3.0 which we reported on back in July.

The developer of ARMED! has released an update for the title, which is now available on Windows 8 as well as Windows Phone. We previously looked at the strategy game when it was bumped to version 1.6, and before that when a Windows 8 preview was available for free. It's yet another large update so let's jump into it.

Smartboard Calculator isn't your run of the mill Windows Phone calculator app. Inspired by the old school blackboard where you calculator acts like a blackboard where you can scroll around by touch to review all your calculations.

Smartboard Calculator was recently updated to address a few usability and performance issues and tweak the free version. The free version is now a fully-functional, ad-supported version.

Hotel Finder updated, search function fixed

Hotel Finder is a simple Windows Phone app that helps you find hotels based on your Windows Phone location services. The app taps into a database of over 230,000 hotels worldwide and maps them out with filters for price and hotel class. The database for Hotel Finder is provided through Booking.com.

The most recent update corrects issues related to database searches and a few other performance tweaks. The developer is also looking to expand the hotel database to add other service providers.

A reimagined Skype client is on the way

Update: As we suspected this video was is no way sanctioned to be released publicly and as such, a copyright claim by AOL/Engadget has had it removed. Translation: this was suppose to be under wraps but was made public on accident.

Update 2: We found a second source of the video, catch it while you can

Skype for Windows Phone 8 has been demoed by Derrick Snyder, now head of mobile marketing at Skype. In the video, Snyder runs viewers through what we can all expect from the new client. Now, before we crack into what's shown in the video, it's worth noting that this is a brand new application for Windows Phone, though many of the new features have been covered before.

About a week ago we mentioned how the Nokia Lumia 610 was due for a firmware update to improve the camera and device performance. Indeed that rollout has now begun as the 610 is being updated to firmware 8779.12340.

We looked at NewsSpot back in September and have since been contacted by the developer to advise that version 2.7 is now available.

The Google Reader client was well received by us and we were looking forward to seeing the updates trickle through so we’re glad things are now on track. To get the update you will need to hit a new link in the marketplace which you can find below.

Gamertags—they can be fun but also quite ridiculous. Same with people’s first names but probably less so, which may be the reason why the Windows Phone Store has started to use them.

A few readers told us of the changes and sure enough, when you now look at reviews for apps you’re more likely to see “Pat”, “Sarah” and “Kyle” than “Moonstomper82”.  What’s more, you will no longer see those generic usernames that are left when someone doesn’t have a Gamertag yet, instead you just see “User”.

In our opinion it does make the Store look much more clean and is easier to read, it also doesn’t look quite as juvenile as before (don’t worry, we’re sure your username is the coolest).

What do you folks think? Thumbs up or down and what negatives are there, if any? Thanks, Garret C. and others for the tip

This morning we woke up to a few app-updates on our Windows Phone but before we were able to process them, we were prompted with a new pop up from Microsoft.

Filed under ‘Setup Account’ the new agreement centers on ‘Personalize my Music’ and simply says "Send us your music playing and rating data to tailor the Zune experience to your interests". Of course there is no mention of Xbox Music, the new service that is replacing Zune Music, but it is clear that Microsoft is starting to roll out some features for consumers.

Now what makes this interesting is as far as we know, Zune always had this feature of rating music and songs you liked, then giving you recommendations under the Zune Desktop client. But from what we remember that would only happen when you manually synced with your desktop—but now it seems as if your recommendations will go over-the-air.

What we still don’t see though is a ‘Recommendations’ section on the phone in the Windows Phone Music Store, which is an odd omission (unless we’re missing it). Currently you have to use the Desktop sync client to get personalized choices, something that we hope comes to our phones directly in the future (we don’t really sync that often with our computer these days).

Nokia has pushed an update to its City Lens augmented reality app, which is available from its collection in the Windows Phone Store. As is generally the case with Nokia app updates, no changelog is presently available. We can only imagine that minor improvements are included as no big features have been highlighted.

Although the Lync 2010 app was MIA yesterday in the Store it evidently was due to the fact that it was getting an update.

Indeed heading to the Store you can now find version 4.3 ready for download. Unfortunately, there is no change log to go with it and since we don’t use Lync ourselves, we can’t do our normal compare and contrast. The app was last updated in March with version 4.1.

But if you’re a Lync fan, you’ll want to go ahead and grab the update here. Notice some changes? Let us know in comments.

Read all about artists in the music hub

It would appear that Microsoft is updating the Music & Video hub with new features. According to a number of Windows Phone Central readers who reside in multiple markets, the hub now pulls down and displays the biography of an artist that's currently being viewed on a Windows Phone. This functionality was restricted to the US.

When selecting an artist a new tab will appear between 'songs' and 'related' that will contain a pane of text for the consumer to read through. It's an interesting addition to the service, and appears to be unrestricted - so should you not have a Zune Pass and load your own tracks, it should still pull down the correct biography per-artist if everything is in order.

It's good to see Microsoft roll out features and useful functionality such as this in markets outside the US. Be sure to let us know in the comments should you notice biographies now being displayed while browsing through your music collection on the go.

Thanks to everyone who tipped us on this!
