updates

Some time ago Ascendo released four language dictionaries for Windows Phone 8. The dictionaries cover Spanish, German, Italian and French. The developers have been hard at work improving things and recently released an update that boosts the translation tools these apps possess.

Most notably, the version 3.5.1.28 update adds an audio pronunciation of the translated word. Which can be very useful for those who struggle outside their native tongue.

AT&T is pushing out a Windows Phone update for the Nokia Lumia 900. We saw the Lumia 900 make the jump to Windows Phone 7.8 back in January and the latest update takes the OS version from 8858 to 8862 (2175.2307.8862.13100 to be exact).

According to NokiaCare, the update adds theme colors, lock screen improvements, fixes Live Tile issues and makes updated Nokia apps available.  This is likely similar to the update Microsoft pushed out back in March to fix the issues we experienced with the original 7.8 update.

Lighthouse Game Studio’s follow-up to Torchbear, the location-based game Greed City has been out on Windows Phone 8 for something like two months now. And in that time, the developer has released its fair share of updates. Each one of these makes the free game a little more rounded and more worthy of players’ time.

Today’s update, version 1.1.7 adds an exciting new feature: the ability to comment on other users’ actions, plus a few more minor features and bug fixes.

A Windows Phone update is being pushed out for the AT&T HTC 8X but there's not much to go on as far as what the update accomplishes.

The OS version remains at 8.0.10211.204 and the Firmware reads 1532.20.20100.502. The update only takes a few minutes to install and there isn't anything obvious as to what the update brings to the table.

Our guess is this update is similar to the update Verizon pushed out recently and has a few patches here, a few fixes there. We'll see what we can dig up but in the meantime, if you see any changes after updating, let us know below in the comments.

It's becoming quite the update central lately with numerous apps sporting new releases. We can now add both Dailymotion and Viber to the list of recently updated. What's new in the new versions? Your guess is as good as ours. Viber is a fairly minor bump from 2.2.2.0 to 2.24.0, whereas Dailymotion has leaped from 1.3.1.0 to 2.0, but we're not entirely sure what's included.

Skulls of the Shogun will forever be known to Windows Phone enthusiasts as the game that broke the Xbox release drought we went through earlier this year. It also happened to be a fantastic game, despite a few rough edges here and there.

When we met up with one of the game’s developers a few weeks ago, he promised that updates would soon be coming to all three versions of the game: Windows Phone, XBLA, and Windows 7. At last those updates are upon us! We've got an exclusive screenshot comparison and visual breakdown of the revamped Windows Phone visuals, plus full change logs for all three versions of Skulls of the Shogun.

HERE Transit (formerly Nokia Transit), which helps you get from point A to point B using public transportation, got a nice little update today. In addition to the usual bug fixes, it also adds some handy new features.

This latest version now lets you view a list of local stations on a map. It also works nicely with HERE Maps, letting you switch between it and HERE Transit in the Journey Planner section. Got some favorite locations in HERE Maps or HERE Drive? Now you can access them through Transit too. It's great to see Nokia tying their suite of HERE applications closer together like a pretty pink bow.

Rum Run, a popular game for Windows Phone, has been bumped to version 1.5. The latest release includes a number of updates that will improve the experience of the strategy game. So what's Rum Run all about? We reviewed the title a while ago, but if you're not familiar the story puts the player in the role of a ship captain who is tasked to deliver food to a starving village. Sounds dangerous, right?

Nokia has pushed out a number of updates for Windows Phone. The apps affected are Nokia Music, Access Point and Network+. Unfortunately we don't have a change log for any of the three apps, but we imagine each release contains minor improvements. It's been a while since we've looked at both Access Point and Network+, but the Nokia Music+ service has been rolling out in multiple markets.

There is speculation that with the Windows 8.1 update users will have the option to boot up directly to the traditional desktop view. The 8.1 update, code named Blue (that will also impact Windows Phones), will still have the hot corner functionality for access to the Charms and Start Screen.  The option will simply launch the desktop view on the computer at boot up.

No word on whether or not the Start Button will be making a comeback (wouldn't hold your breath) but it will be nice to have the option to go straight to the desktop view. Especially for those who prefer the more traditional Windows view.
