updates

AlphaJax is quite the popular Xbox game for Windows Phone. Much of that stems from its relatively smooth asynchronous online play, though the game being free certainly helps. Before AlphaJax graduated to Xbox Live status, it was originally a popular indie game. The transition to Xbox Live introduced a few bugs, which we’ve all been hoping would be fixed with a patch.

Good news, bad news time! The first update for AlphaJax has finally arrived. Now for the bad news: the developer recommends that you skip this update. Full details after the break.

Photo Shader has been around for some time now and Windows Phone 8 version was recently released over in the Store. Along with making a jump to Windows Phone 8, Photo Shader also received a few new features such as Live Tile support, pinch to zoom, a few more effects filters and a few design changes.

Photo Shader wasn't a shabby photo editor to begin with and the updates keeps things nicely in focus.

A while back, Babel Rising was pulled from Windows Phone 8 due to the tiny problem of crashing on start up. It briefly returned to Windows Phone 8 despite still being incompatible. Well, today seems like déjà vu because another partially delisted game is back in semi-working order: the Nokia exclusive tower iBomber Defense from Chillingo and Cobra Mobile.

Earlier this year, Samsung Italy announced that the Samsung Omnia W would receive Wi-Fi tethering capability with the Windows Phone 7.8 update. Well... that didn't happen.

Samsung Italy sites that the Windows Phone 7.8 update was issued directly from Microsoft and for whatever reason, the tethering feature didn't make the cut.  That's the bad news. The good news is that Samsung Italy is working on a separate maintenance update for the Omnia W that will bring tethering into the fold. Look for the update to hit the air in the coming weeks.

Broken Xbox Achievements aren’t especially common in Windows Phone games these days … Mostly because new Xbox Windows Phone games have become so lamentably rare, not because the certification process has improved. One such game that has suffered from a less-than-working Achievement is Picnic Wars, a Nokia exclusive game from Chillingo that launched a short while ago on January 10th.

In record time, Chillingo and Nokia have published an update to fix up Picnic Wars’ Achievement issue. Learn more after the break.

Two updates from Nokia hit the Windows Phone Store recently. One adds Live Tile support and the other drops the price.

Nokia Counters is a popular Windows Phone 7.x app that helps you keep track of your calls, data usage and messaging. The version 1.5.0.48 update adds Live Tile support. The Live Tile will display a graph on your Counters you have set limits on.

The 100th Day of School is an interactive educational app featuring the Sesame Street character Elmo. While the app itself hasn't been updated, the price has. The 100th Day of School is now free and if you're looking for a great educational app that will keep your youngsters entertained, it's a steal of a deal.

We started off today with a number of apps updated for both Windows Phone 7 and 8, and it seems we'll be ending the evening that way too (depending on where you reside). Ragdoll Run, Access Point, Blink and Battery Level for WP8 have all been bumped. It's certainly been a busy day of publishing before the weekend hits Microsoft and developers.

So what's new in this collection of apps?

Joe Belfiore, manager of all things Windows Phone, has announced on Twitter that a new version of PDF Reader is available for Windows Phone 8 owners. The app now supports password protected documents, as well as those set as 'read-only'. Released back in November, it's good to see Microsoft further developing the official PDF app for the platform.

ProShot is an app for your Windows Phone 8 device that delivers a ton of features to your camera. The app was recently updated to version 2.2 that piles a few more features into the mix, including a new look.

Most notable is the addition of a burst mode that allows you to capture images at five frames per second. The burst mode interface is a little on the cumbersome side but after a while it becomes second nature.

Just when you thought the Dell Venue Pro was being relegated to being a Wikipedia page, it looks like the Windows Phone with a bottom slide keyboard is making one more swan song.  We received a tip that the unlocked, unbranded Dell Venue Pro was getting updated to Windows Phone 7.8 and sure enough, it is!

It was a pleasant surprise seeing this old, no longer in production, Windows Phone getting the update.  The Dell Venue Pro joined the HTC Arrive and LG Quantum as the only Windows Phone with a slide out keyboard.  The Dell Venue Pro is a decent Windows Phone and it's a shame the other devices aren't getting the same level of attention.

Microsoft has posted the change log for the Windows Phone 7.10.8858.136, otherwise known as the Windows Phone 7.8 update.

While the hardware of our old Windows Phone 7.5 devices couldn't support a full-blown update to Windows Phone 8, the 7.8 update offers us a few performance tweaks but mostly cosmetic changes. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If you've checked your Windows Phone 7.5 device for the 7.8 update with no success, you may want to try to force the process, just as we did with other Windows Phone updates like Mango.

This is a little different than downloading and installing Windows Phone 7.8 manually, which we reported on earlier. With this method you're basically tricking the Microsoft servers to recognize your Windows Phone and initiating the update early. Think of it as cutting in line (and Microsoft is okay with this, no worries).

The other benefit with this method (versus the CAB one) is it means you are getting the official carrier/OEM update that usually includes the firmware too. If using just CABs you are updating the OS but not any device specific software. That's not a bad thing but it's really not ideal.

Another fine day for rumors, and today we have a fairly big one. Chinese tech site WPDang just announced that according to their resources, the Windows Phone 7.8 OS update will be pushed to all older generation devices (Windows Phone 7.5 and older) in every corner of this world at about 18:00 GMT, January 30, 2013.

Considering you guys could be located anywhere, we'll not convert that into some other time zone. Instead let's just say that if this rumour is indeed true, your old Windows Phone will receive a welcomed update in 5 hours. Not every phone will get the push exactly on time though. Like each update before, Windows Phone 7.8 will roll out in 4 waves, with the whole process concluding in 3 weeks.

If there’s one thing we can count on from indie developer Karios Games, it’s frequent software updates. Karios’ standout jumping game MonsterUp Adventures has already received two substantial updates – one to ease the game’s difficulty and another that greatly improved its boss battles. One aspect of the game still needed tweaking though: its in-game purchases.  That’s just what the new version 1.4 update addresses – for Windows Phone 8 users.

Full update details and a slice of MonsterUp news after the break.

Beem Plus is a Windows Phone music app that allows users to tap into Digitally Imported music sites and stream various EDM radio stations to their Windows Phones. The DI.FM client was updated the other day to version 1.5 to address a handful of bugs, tweak performance and now supports Last.fm scrobbling.

Scrobbling is basically the system building a profile based on the music you play regularly and makes recommendations based on that profile. With the update, you no longer need to have a specific track name written in your notebook, instead just have it listed in your "Recently Played" table. You can either perform manual scrobbling by tapping the sharing button above the heart (in the station player) or enable auto-scrobbling where, for each opened station, the current track details will be automatically sent to your Last.fm account.

I regret to report that the Xbox Windows Phone game release drought continues unabated this week, making the fifth week in a row without a new release (not counting Nokia exclusives). But it’s not all bad news. For one, we have the awesome cross-platform Skulls of the Shogun coming out next week on January 30th. And this week, Microsoft will be throwing Windows Phone 8 users a bone…

Following on the heels of yesterday’s Let’s Golf 2, another game gains Windows Phone 8 compatibility tomorrow: Shuffle Party from Babaroga and Microsoft Studios. Shuffle Party will be free as always, and is probably the third best free mobile Xbox game after Wordament and AlphaJax.
