DEAL OF THE WEEK: Save 70% on the DICOTA Hard Cover for Nokia Lumia 900!

updates

For those of you who weren't lucky enough to land a spot in the public beta test of the new Xbox 360 dashboard, fear not. The official version has begun rolling out to about 3 million consoles around the world and will continue for the next week. Once that first batch is finished, more and more LIVE subscribers will be added to the rollout over the next couple of weeks. Much like Windows Phone updates, the deployment was spread out over time and across different regions to make it go as smoothly as possible.

Reinstaller is a free little app available for Windows Phone that aids consumers in starting fresh on a new handset, or when reseting a Windows Phone. The app essentially does exactly what the name suggests - it reinstalls apps already purchased by connecting to windowsphone.com.

Once the user has logged in and connected Reinstaller to the official Windows Phone website, Reinstaller pulls down all previously installed apps (both paid and free downloads). Instead of searching the Store for each and every app you've previously owned, Reinstaller provides a useful shortcut.

Note+ updated to v2, multiple notes added

If you recall, Note+ is a simple, yet effective, note taking app for your Windows Phone. The developer, Aälejandro Díazs, is based in the Dominican Republic where the Windows Phone Store isn't supported. But with the help of Nokia Developer Ambassador Rich Dunbar, Díazs was able to get the app published.

Well...Díazs took in all the feedback from Note+ users and basically re-wrote the app. The premise of the app is the same in that Note+ allows you jot down quick notes while on the go but it now supports multiple notes and Live Tile support for each note you generate.

We took a look the Windows Phone app Track My Life a while ago and found it to be a decent GPS tracking app for your Windows Phone. Track My Life charts your travels to give you an idea of where you've been and where you spend the most time at. The developers have been busy updating the app to improve things and incorporate suggestions from users. The latest version is 3.0 and adds a Time Machine feature to the app.

What is the Time Machine you ask? The Time Machine feature lets you select what data range you want to display on Track My Life. You have options to look at the past week, past month or a custom setting where you can go back months.

The popular Windows Phone YouTube client Metrotube has been updated. Version 3.4 appears to be primarily a maintenance update covering fixes for HD streaming bug that we mentioned a few weeks ago as well as other performance tweaks.

You also now have the ability to disable the main tile from flipping. The update has passed certification and you should be seeing it live shortly.

The Quote updated, search feature added

We took a look at the Windows Phone app The Quote a while back and found it to be a nice app for our Windows Phone but with room for improvement. Improvements that the latest update, version 2.8, brings to the table.

Version 2.8 brings a search feature and performance tweaks that improves load speeds. The Search feature is your basic keyword search to hunt for a particular author or topic. It's a nice feature when you're looking for a specific quote and don't have the time to surf through the library.

There have been a number of updates being pushed through the Windows Phone Store today, including new versions for ARMED!, Farm Frenzy 2, Adobe Reader and USA Today. While we've only managed to obtain changes for ARMED!, we'll still fire up the alert that you can look forward to update notifications for both USA Today, Adobe Reader and Farm Frenzy 2.

The Microsoft Dev Center has been a thorny issue for many developers lately with some app submissions having been held up for weeks, odd rejections and slow propagation of updates.  While we can’t attest to whether or not those have all been fixed, Microsoft has evidently been rolling out many tweaks to make it better.

Rocket Riot was among the first Xbox Live games released on Windows Phone, way back at the end of 2010. Despite the game’s age, developer Code Glue continues to pump out updates for it, with a new one arriving within the last few days. The previous patch, version 1.4 was fairly substantial as Windows Phone updates go, and yet this latest, version 1.5 actually manages to top it by adding Avatar Awards, asynchronous multiplayer, and more.

Check out the full release notes and our impressions after the break.

A short time ago, we took a quick look at the Windows Phone app Time Sync. Time Sync is a world time app that helps you keep track of the current time in various parts of the world. As more Windows Phone users began to give the time app a try, a few stability issues were identified that caused Time Sync to crash.

Time Sync's developer picked up on the issues, in part from your comments, and began working on an update that has recently passed certification. Version 1.1 takes care of the bugs that caused the app to crash. It also adds a City list reorder feature. This new feature allows you to sort the cities you monitor to your liking.

If you use the Accuweather app on your Windows Phone, you'll notice an update being pushed through this morning. Version 2.2 doesn't bring any new features to the weather app but instead is more of a maintenance update to address a few bug fixes.

We have noticed that after updating, whatever fixes that are put in place seems to give Accuweather a little more zip. Pages load faster and navigation smoother.

Feed Me is a popular RSS Reader for your Windows Phone that was recently updated to version 2.0. Feed Me can be used as a stand alone reader or as a Google Reader client.

Asides from some bug fixes, the version 2.0 update for Feed Me brings a decent set of new features to the table.

City Lens just keeps on getting better

Nokia appears to be in an update mood lately as this weekend we’ve noticed two of their big apps get some small updates.

Update: City Lens update was just a re-submission to fix an error with the Chinese Windows Phone Store

First up is City Lens, which is being bumped to version 1.10.1632. That’s a fairly low number change, so we’re going to assume that these are minor bug fixes and code optimizations to make it all run buttery smooth. In fact it does feel faster for us to load and calibrate but that could be placebo too.

We don’t think this is the ‘big’ new update that Nokia talked about last week—that one includes 3D icons and the ability filter items out of the line of site.

If only backing up was this easy

Continuing on with our series of Windows Phone how tos for those who are new to the platform, today we'll be looking at how to backup and restore our smartphones. Backing up is a chore than many have to undertake on their PC, whether it be apps, documents or photos from a memorable vacation - it's always best to have more than one copy of everything. The same goes for contents on your smartphone.

Should anything happen to your Windows Phone, or if you’d like to revert to an earlier snapshot, you’ll need a backup at hand to get everything working in perfect order. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn’t currently offer an official facility to manually backup a Windows Phone (not even in Zune), but luckily there are alternatives thanks to an active developing community.

We first looked at live music service Pepper earlier this year at a previous WPUG event. The app and backend service impressed us with the variety of features available, as well as how unique the functionality is in a package we've yet to see elsewhere. Exclusively available for Windows Phone, we enjoyed having the Pepper team on-board pushing the platform further with continued support. We've now got word that an imminent update is on its way, as well as apps for both Windows 8 and the iPhone.

Lots of app updates including our fave, Memento Pro

Over the last few weeks the Windows Phone Marketplace has had some minor issues, including pushing out updates for apps in timely manner. In fact, we’ve heard from a few developers that their updates have been delayed due to a backlog in the approval process.

So it’s perhaps of little wonder then that this morning we awoke to see a mini-flood of app update notifications on our phone and from what you, our audience, have reported to us.

Since there are so many, we figured we would wrap up the ones we know of (or at least for apps we use and approve at Windows Phone Central).

Wheel of Wealth is a Wheel of Fortune styled game for your Windows Phone. The game features local play as well as an online multi-player option. Wheel of Wealth is a fun time waster and the game has been updated to version 2.0.

The update focuses on two key areas brought to the developers attention by Wheel of Wealth users; player registration and game speed. Players weren't too eager to cough up their email address and opted for the offline game mode. To help make registration easier and more private, you can now login to play the online game through your Facebook account.

Nokia have announced that the Nokia Maps app will get getting the augmented reality (AR) treatment. At present, AR is only present in Nokia City Lens. At today’s Lumia announcement they showed maps switching to a view similar to what's present in City Lens.

We could also be witnessing an upcoming convergence with their location based apps having much more in common?
