verizon

Back in November, we covered the confirmation of the HTC Trophy coming to Verizon early this year. Earlier this month we posted some information pointing to a launch on March, 24th.  Now we are seeing offers on the Verizon website that details an offer for Microsoft Employees that expires April 1, 2011.  It may be an indication that the Trophy isn't too far away from hitting the shelves.

The offers for Microsoft employees (lucky) seems like a very attractive deal indeed. One would simply contact Verizon and extend the service contract for a further two years, then you will receive $100 in billing credit (per line) on your account. Verizon would then email you as to when the Trophy arrives onto the network and for a fee of $199 the phone is yours, which is coupled with free case and vehicle power charger.  Then to sweeten the deal further, Microsoft employees will be reimbursed the $199 cost by Microsoft.  This is likely an extension of Microsoft's "free phone program" for employees.

The device, as previously reported, will be featuring the NoDo update (though not the latest), quadband and is said to have 16GB memory, but is the HTC Wildfire counterpart for WP7. I actually bought this device for my partner for £300, so this deal is a real catch for eligible employees.

Thanks Kiel for the tip!

We've heard that the Verizon HTC Trophy is on the cusp of release--we know it's in tester hands, has a NoDo update (though not the latest, whatever that means) and we've heard that "end of March" was the time frame for release. Of course we also heard, though we expressed skepticism, that June may be the date as well.

Well good news, as things look to be sliding towards the end of March, specifically Thursday the 24th. Yes, in just under two-weeks time, Verizon will reportedly begin stocking and selling their first Windows Phone device, which is a global phone to boot. Featuring a 3.8" screen, 16GB of memory and a 5MP camera, the phone should be more than adequate for Verizon users.

The email above comes from our sister site Android Central, who got their hands evidently on a Verizon/third party vendor email. It is noted that "Launch Dates Are subject to change", so anything is possible. But we think Verizon will have more to say at CTIA in Orlando in a few weeks (yes, we'll have people there for coverage). We also expect more info to start pouring out about this phone about....now?

Interested in using a Windows Phone 7 device on Verizon? Of course you are. We're hoping the Trophy will arrive sometime in March. Those hopes are a little brighter now that a tipster has sent in a few photos of the device live with Verizon's branding. Our tipster tells us that the "NoDo" update with Copy & Paste is definitely on board and also that launching apps feels significantly faster.

As you can see above HTC's hub is also in full effect and it looks like Verizon has gone ahead and made an account management app as well - no surprise there (flashback: Verizon apps published in Marketplace). So who is planning on laying down the expected $199 on-contract price for this baby?

We've heard rumors that the HTC Trophy would land at Verizon sometime in March. Pictures of the new Windows Phone are now beginning to surface.

It is our understanding that the pictured Trophy is running the updated version of Windows Phone 7, complete with copy/paste. To help complete the Verizon branding, HTC has also changed the yellow underside to red.

The Verizon Trophy is expected to be introduced with the pricing point of $200 (more than likely $199.99) after contractual discounts.

Verizon could be preparing to announce a possible March WP7 device launch, as soon as this coming Monday (28th February). The device that will be introduced is the HTC 7 Trophy for $200 on a two-year contract. Verizon, attempting to combat Sprint with their announcement of the HTC Arrive, plans to offer their WP7 entry at around the same period of release.

Both networks will have the "NoDo' update for WP7 on their device, which will allow customers to use copy & paste amend other highly anticipated amendments. This is great news for newcomers and already established WP7 owners.

Microsoft stated back in September that no CMDA versions of Windows Phone 7 would be available until 2011 while they focused resources on prioritised tasks. The coming months will prove to be an exciting time for the community, and the addition of Verizon and Sprint can only increase market share within the industry.

Editors Note: We've received a fair number of anonymous tips this week saying the same thing. We didn't run them because there was nothing to back them up outside of "highly plausible/duh". Still, it helps in our mind to corroborate this current story.

Although Windows Phone 7 coverage at CES 2011 has been a bust (more on that later) a CDMA verion of the HTC Trophy has run its way through the FCC guantlet.  There was no direct mention of the "Trophy" name; however, a nearly identical model number to the European version of the Trophy was mentioned in the docs (PC40200 vs PC40100).  The device was also granted approval through the WiFi Alliance using the same certificate as HTC's Mozart and Surround.

As previously reported, Verizon is intending to release a WP7 Trophy in early 2011.  While it is unclear when exactly "early" refers to, this FCC approval means it's on the horizon. Our bet? Latest: end of February.

We know from previous reports that Verizon (and Sprint) are close to launching Windows Phone 7--by all accounts January is the big month--and now we're starting to see some real evidence.

Three apps--Slacker Radio, Netflix and My Verizon Mobile (to manage your account)--all tailored for Verizon, are now live in the Marketplace. While nothing crazy about it, it's nice to know that our CDMA brethren will be getting in on some of this WP7 love sooner than later.

So you guys getting excited yet?

The title says it all, but let us get into some details about the closing of Microsoft's KIN Studio, which was the backbone in the cloud for the device.

Evidently, come January 31st, people with KINs (all two of you) will lose the ability to do everything over-the-air, except use your Zune Pass over WiFi and email. What exactly is everything? Check it:

  • Feed Reader will stop working
  • Search Near me will stop working
  • Posting Photos to social sites will no longer be possible
  • Most pictures currently on Kin will only appear at thumbnail resolution
  • Posting to Social Networks will no longer work.
  • No comments from the loop
  • Social network contacts will disappear.
  • Loop will stop to work
  • Kin Spot will only send to emails.
  • Social networks only accessed from web browser.

So outside of making phone calls and playing music, the KIN is really, truly dead. Why even bother after that last, half attempt at a re-launch? We have no idea either. But Verizon is trying to make things right by letting users know now to back up their data now and going one step further, allowing them to pick a 3G phone of their choice for FREE. Offer is valid only through March 31st. Attached are some images from the pamphlet that Verizon is sending out to KIN customers. More can be found here.

Thanks, Conflipper, for the info!

Analyst Charles Wolf of Needham and Co., is calling the launch of Windows Phone 7 a success. Wolf bases his analysis not on current numbers, but on Microsoft’s commitment to marketing Windows Phone 7. The report further states that if Microsoft continues to grow market share, Google’s Android platform could be the big loser. Much of Android’s success is due to Verizon’s Droid line of phones, which in turn can be attributed to the lack of a Verizon iPhone. A potential iPhone launch on Verizon, coupled with Microsoft’s commitment to CDMA support, could leave Google the odd man out.

We knew that eventually, Verizon would join the Windows Phone 7 movement. From the Twitter posts of recent we knew it would be in early 2011. From the Verizon pre-order program for Microsoft Employees we knew it would be the HTC Trophy.

We just couldn't narrow down how early, "early 2011" meant.  Could it be by the end of the first quarter or sooner?

According to a one sentence post over at Windows Phone Secrets, the "early" means January.  Not much detail beyond that and it will be interesting to see if the Trophy can beat the iPhone to Verizon's lineup.

The good news is that once we all survive the Holidays and College Bowl season, January is right around the corner. If we hear anything sooner, we'll be sure to pass it on.

I’m told this is the Windows Phone model that will appear first on Verizon, in January.

While the rest of us have moved on to Windows Phone 7, there once was a killer device (sans CPU) called the Touch Pro 2 running Windows Mobile 6.5. And although some of us have forgotten it, it looks like Verizon and HTC have not as they just released a maintenance package, MR3, on November 30th. It's last update was in June.

Unfortunately, no change log is present though we may get some feedback from fellow readers on any changes. Good on Verizon and HTC for keeping with those updates.

Update: We think the Windows Phone team may be getting their releases mixed up as in a follow up tweet they now say "Verizon is a valued partner and we look forward to seeing Windows Phone 7 devices in their stores in 2011." Going further, they evidently deleted the earlier tweet you see snapped above ;-/

It appears that Verizon customers will be enjoying Windows Phone 7 this holiday season after all. A tweet from @windowsphone is giving a strong indication of such and not mincing words about it either; "devices will be rolling into Verizon stores this holiday season and more will arrive in early 2011."

It's a shame these tweets didn't offer more detail such as when exactly the Windows Phone will hit Verizon and which phone(s) will be first. We've seen signs that the HTC Trophy 7 is confirmed for Verizon but not expected until early 2011. Could the production time table have shortened for the Trophy?

Or will we see another Windows Phone 7 device appear on the radar for the holidays and the Trophy will be a part of the "more" devices in early 2011?

Microsoft's KIN phones have risen from the dead and are once again available through Verizon Wireless. Verizon is listing them under their Feature Phone category with a slight name change. The KIN ONEm is the smaller, bottom slide-out keyboard model and the KIN TWOm is the larger, side slide-out keyboard model.

The KIN ONEm is priced at $19.99 with contractual discounts and the KIN TWOm is priced at $49.99 with the discounts. Either phone will require a voice package of at least $39.99 and it doesn't appear a data package is required (as it was for the previous release). There is no indication as to what the "m" designation is in reference to.  "Much Cheaper" maybe?

I'm not sure how attractive the KIN will be without data but maybe Verizon will have some success this go around by not treating the KIN as a feature phone as opposed to a smartphone.

Well that didn't take too long. Just 24 hours after we posted about Verizon warming up to Microsoft and Windows Phone 7 comes an official advertisement for the HTC Trophy 7 coming in "early 2011".

Like Sprint and the 7 Pro, this is an early program for Microsoft employees to pre-order the device, but either way we can expect it for us regular folk sometime soon after.

The good news is the phone is a also a quad-band GSM world phone, perfect for you globe trotting business peeps. The bad news is that it's the HTC Trophy. While a solid little phone with generally positive reviews, it is pretty much the runt of the litter with a 3.8" screen, 16GB of memory (not bad), Wi-Fi and a 5MP camera (the Mozart with the unibody design and 8MP camera is the upgraded version)

But hey, at least we know Verizon is now on the up and up with WP7 and that's always good news.

A few months ago it seemed Verizon Wireless was giving the cold shoulder to Microsoft and their new OS, taking a "wait and see" approach.  However, things may have changed recently, possibly due to positive word-of-mouth that WP7 may have potential after all.

In a recent Tweet, the company suggested that they're just waiting on Microsoft to deliver the OS and that they're "excited" to offer the new platform to their customers. The waiting on Microsoft bit goes back to the unfinished work on porting the new OS to CDMA. We know Sprint is a big partner with Microsoft and that they're getting close to launching the much anticipated 7 Pro.

Will we see some WP7 action from Verizon sooner than later? It looks like we will.

Thanks, Joe C, for the catch!

Verizon has updated it's Network Extender to offer 3G data coverage. Earlier models offers slower data connections but the updated version allows you to surf the web, download applications, send/receive text messages, and check your email at five bars of 3G speed.

The Samsung network extender will cost you $249.99 and provides up to 40 feet of coverage. There is no additional monthly charge for using the Verizon Wireless 3G Network Extender. According to the FAQ Section on Verizon's website,

"There are no additional costs to use just the Network Extender. You can simply purchase the unit and enjoy the benefit of enhanced in-home coverage. All rates and policies associated with your chosen calling plan will apply when connected to the Network Extender."

Which is a round about way of saying that the data and voice calls made through your Network Extender will eat into your package minutes and data plan.

If you live in an area that has poor coverage, these extenders are worth every penny. You can find out more about the Network Extender at Verizon and follow the break for the full presser.

It looks like Verizon is going to go through with tiered data plans but they aren't adding too many tiers or getting rid of the unlimited plan.

Strong indications have the new rate plans going into effect on October 28, 2010 and the data plans for 3G Smartphones will be as follows:

  • $15 per month for 150mb
  • $29.99 for unlimited data.

Overages to the base plan will cost you $15 for an additional 150mb. Existing customers can stick with their existing plan or migrate to the new plans.  AT&T has the better base deal offering 200mb at the $15 price range but eliminated their unlimited plan.

Verizon will also tier data plans for 3G Tablets; $20 for 1GB, $35 for 3GB, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10GB. Overage fees are $10 per GB except for the $20 base plan, which will run you $20 per GB.

By now, we're hoping that the news has sunken in, you've sobered up, gone back to your job and reacquainted yourself with your current beater-of-a-smartphone, sporting technology nearly a year old. The fact that there will be no Windows Phone 7 devices for CDMA (Sprint, Verizon, etc.) till "first half of 2011" was quite a blow, wuddinit?

This obviously puts a monkey wrench in a lot of our holiday plans and, like some of you, we're considering alternates e.g. getting an AT&T account (ahem, while keeping our Sprint SERO plan on the side).

But what are your plans? Switching carriers? Hold out with Sprint/Verizon till spring 2011? Going with Android, like so many Windows Mobile "power users"?

Take the poll and sound off in comments, we're curious and you need to vent!

Since there will be no CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices till mid 2011, what are your plans?Market Research

All the signs for months have been pointing to the sad notion that Verizon may be holding out on Windows Phone 7.

They were noticeably absent from the February Barcelona announcement, kept quiet on any leaks and of course who could forget the KIN fiasco? (Through in a dash of iPhone rumors to boot as well). See our earlier coverage on the issue.

Today, sadly, Verizon has officially confirmed that news in an interview with Business Week:

Verizon Wireless won’t offer a device at the planned fall introduction or at any point this year, Brenda Raney, a Verizon spokeswoman, said today in an interview. The carrier plans to support the new operating system and will probably release a phone in 2011, she said.

Raney also went on to say that their relationship with Microsoft was "solid", exercising some PR spin for sure.

So, Verizon peeps, looks like you'll have to wait a bit for WP7 to land on Big Red...or will you defect to other carriers? Take the poll, rage on in comments!

Will you stay and wait for Verizon or look to other carriers for your Windows Phone 7 experience?Market Research

It appears that Verizon is close to launching a new subscriber service called Mobile Recovery. The service will allow Verizon customers using smartphones to locate their device via GPS, sound an alarm on their phone, remotely lock or wipe their phone.

The service will be a free add-on for those who subscribe to a Total Equipment Coverage (TEC) plan and will be compatible with Android, Windows Phones, Palm or Blackberry phones.

If you are already on a TEC plan, you can go to MyMobileRecovery.com for details on how to enroll in Mobile Recovery.  There is no word yet if non-TEC customers will be eligible for the service.
