DEAL OF THE WEEK: Save 70% on the DICOTA Hard Cover for Nokia Lumia 900!

Wallpaper

Nokia ran a poll on its blog last week, asking consumers which of the different lock screen features they valued most. Whether it's the notifications, the background images or locking the Windows Phone with a passcode, visitors had the selection of three to choose from. The team has now published the results, which aren't entirely surprising.

You think I’m just going to sit idly by and let Rich have all the fun with wallpapers? Not a chance. Here are some similar wallpapers to the ones he did the other day, but I would wager raise the bar on minimalism. Just our kickass Windows Phone Central logo set to the background color of your choice.

Hello Friends is a really nifty Windows Phone lockscreen app that generates a wallpaper based off your Windows Phone contact photos. While the original release had Hello Friends only compatible with Windows Phone 8 devices, the latest update brings the app to our Windows Phone 7 devices.

Version 3.0 of Hello Friends is now available for the Windows Phone 7 devices and while it won't automatically change your lockscreen wallpaper, it allows you to create the image collage, save it to your Pictures Hub and set it manually as your lockscreen wallpaper as you would any other photo.

Hello Friends is an app that's available for Windows Phone 8 owners who wish to customise their lockscreens with a collage of friend photos. The arrangement of photos are refreshed periodically in the background, leading to an effective change every so often. The app has now been bumped and includes a number of improvements.

The Windows Phone 8 lockscreen app Photostream just got a little better.

Photostream already gives you the ability to not only rotate your lockscreen wallpapers from images in your Pictures Hub but PhotoStream will also tapped into Flickr to generate lockscreen wallpapers. The app was recently updated to version 1.2 and allows you to tap into photos on 500px as well.

We’ve been getting a lot of Windows Phone 8 live lockscreen apps lately and we couldn’t be happier. With these new tools for developers we’re going to start to see some real creativity in the coming weeks and we just found our new favorite: HelloFriends.

The app is so ingenious, we’re kind of shocked Microsoft didn’t build this in to the OS—after all, the concept is their very own. HelloFriends simply generates gorgeous lock screen wallpaper based off of your contact photos. It creates three types—all mini tiles, one with varying sizes and one with some huge tiles mixed in and then updates every 30 minutes with a new pattern.

Lock Themes is a Windows Phone 8 app that keeps your lock screen wallpapers fresh by rotating images from select themes. Lock Themes provides you with over forty themes that include astronomy, nature, horoscopes, daily inspirational quotes, and travel.  Lock Themes has a healthy selection of themes with new themes added weekly.

Lock Themes is laid out in simple and straight forward fashion. You have a page to turn enable/disable Lock Themes and a page listing all the themes. At the bottom of the screen you will find four command buttons; save the current lock screen to your Pictures Hub, request a theme from the developer, search the themes and clear your search results.

Paper Shuffle is a Windows Phone 8 app that will rotate lockscreen wallpaper images automatically.  While there is a native Windows Phone 8 feature to do this through Bing, those images are chosen at random.  Paper Shuffle lets you choose the images in the wallpaper rotation.

Paper Shuffle is a simple app that lets you select images from your Pictures Hub that can be rotated automatically at various intervals. To add an image, just hit the + button on the Paper Page of Paper Shuffle. Unfortunately you can't add complete galleries but instead the images must be added one at a time.

A new image has leaked out tonight revealing for the first time Window Phone 8's new "live" lockscreen wallpaper feature. We have mentioned live lockscreen wallpapers before, specifically when the Windows Phone 8 SDK leaked over the summertime (and we told you about them even before then). The feature is not quite as “live” as Android where things are actually moving around, wasting your battery. Instead, this is truly useful.

The image above, received by the site Nokia Innovation, shows three examples of this Live locksreen wallpaper: Bing, ESPN and USA Today. The former will refresh the lockscreen every day with Bing’s latest background, ESPN can show you sports scores presumably of your favorite team and USA Today highlights news via tile images.

We’ve hinted at this before and the leak of the Windows Phone 8 SDK is validating our claim that “Apollo” will allow richer notification support for 3rd party developers.

Developers will now be able to have their app send notifications to the Lock Screen with the content reflecting the app’s Live Tile:

“In Windows Phone, the lock screen contained a handful of notifications such as the number of new Outlook emails and text messages. In Windows Phone 8 Developer Preview, end users can choose to customize this area with any third party apps they choose. As a developer, you can enable your app to be used in this feature. “

An app can provide content for the following four items on the lock screen:

  • The background image. This image is unrelated to lock screen notifications, and is documented at Lock screen background for Windows Phone.
  • An app icon
  • An app count
  • App text

Since Windows Phone users can't spend a lot of time customizing their OS (instead we live our lives), there's much focus on the lock-screen. We know we change ours every few days (we use Ffffound for inspiration).

Today, Microsoft has announced a partnership with London based graphic designer Levi Freeman and as a result, they've released eight "officially sanctioned" wallpapers to spiffy up your Windows Phone.

The eight images are nature focused so they may not appeal to everyone (we're more into abstract art here). Still, the designs are nice and they're meant to look perfect on your phone. What's more, the images all have a corresponding QR code for easy download (see, not even Microsoft uses Tag). Plus Microsoft notes that they hope more of these collaborations will happen with Levi, meaning we can probably expect different themes in the future--we like that idea. Levi also plans to release desktop versions too.

There's some interesting tidbits about the inspiration for each image and details about Freeman at his site, so hop on over to grab those images and learn a little bit about their origins.

Microsoft has pushed out yet another update for their Insider app--the app that gives you free Bing wallpapers, ringtones, tips and more from the Windows Phone Team.

What's unique about this update though (and smart) is the inclusion of the Smoked by Windows Phone logo/wallpaper which you can then use for your Lock screen. Pretty cool idea, although if we could offer some criticism: the text on the wallpaper overlaps with the Lock screen info, making it perhaps not the smartest decision for reading visibility.

A smaller, notable change is also the new Bing logo in the wallpaper info-bar area. Don't worry, it doesn't save like that.

The Insider app is updated about once a month to include new ringtones and wallpaper and seeing as its free, we see no reason to not have this on your phone (we really like 'Aphex' for our ringtone). Pick it up here in the Marketplace. Thanks, @WobblyChair, for the tip!

The retro wallpapers are available in three styles:

  • Style 1 – A simple enlargement with smoothing,

  • Style 3 – Glowing Neon Edges.

Bandey is taking requests, should you wish to see another title be available as a wallpaper.

We previously covered the Windows Phone Lock Screen wallpapers by AJ Troxell, which provided owners with an extra layer of protection should they misplace their phone. The wallpapers are customizable with editable files included in the pack so personal information can be added including name, email, number, etc.

As AJ is being non-secret Santa this year with 12 days of freebies, and because the lock screen wallpapers proved to be popular, he's released version 2 today. What's new? 4 styles, 43 backgrounds, 4 variations of complete icon sets, and comes in Photoshop and Illustrator formats. Head on over to AJ's site (link below) to download version 2 of this truly useful pack.

We're certainly not having a shortage of wallpaper sites these days and this morning, we have another. This one comes from reader Criss and while the selection isn't massive, they are unique and minimalist, featuring the Windows Phone logo and a variety of colors. We're actually digging some of these, especially the variety of colors to match your preferred accent. [Edit: Heads up, if you keep scrolling down, you might see some scantaliy clad ladies]

It certainly wouldn't hurt to browse over there on your phone and take a gander: http://wpwalls.wordpress.com/

And don't forget if you're into making wallpaper, we're having a neat-ol little contest here where you can win a brand-new Samsung Focus S. We already have some amazing entries here in our forum but maybe yours will be the winner? Runner-ups will also get featured here on the site and within version 2.0 of our official app, so crack open that Photoshop on this idyllic Sunday and go for it!

Should you lose your Windows Phone, there is a possibility that should a person come across it they'll return it. But what if there's a lock on the handset? They can't rummage around your Twitter, Live, email and Facebook accounts in attempt to contact you. This is where WP7 Lock Screen comes into play.

Waking up the screen will present whoever has picked up your phone with a wallpaper that's customised with your contact details so they can easily get in touch, whether it be via Twitter, Facebook or a landline number. An optional add on is a "cash reward" message at the bottom of the wallpaper, providing a small incentive to return the lost valuable.

Think of it also as a portable, digital business card that you don't have to keep in your wallet. It's a neat little idea. The pack, by AJ Troxell, is freely available at the source below and includes a .PSD file for customisation.

We're always looking to refresh our lock screen on our ten Windows Phones. Okay, well you probably don't have that big of a problem but still, if you're like us and a bit geeky, these "minimalist" Star Wars wallpapers will suit your needs.

Created by Rafal Rola and cropped/re-sized by 1800PocketPC, there are the six posters for the Star Wars films (although lets be honest, there are only three real films, amiright?) and another nine for specific characters, including yes, Mr. Bobba Fett (Boba Fett, where?!).

So haul yourself on over, get your downloading on and represent some Star Wars.

We've covered some wallpaper packs before, not to mention full size wallpapers being trimmed to fit the 480x800 resolution on Windows Phones. Unfortunately, should one not be familiar with a photo editing suite, then creating wallpapers can be a daunting task. Thankfully, WPWallpapers has been launched. This new website will focus on building a database of wallpapers that are ready for deployment, and can be downloaded easily.

But, how easy? Scanning Microsoft Tags easy. Each submitted (and approved) wallpaper will have a tag associated with it and will allow easy download by scanning away. A handy resource for those who change wallpapers often.
