wallpapers

If there is one thing Nokia Lumia owners have, it’s immodesty when it comes to their brightly colored phones (often to the chagrin of Samsung and HTC fans, ahem). So why not take it a step further with these handful of wallpapers?

One of the neat features on Windows Phone 8 is the flexibility with lockscreens. We've seen several apps take advantage of adding widgets to the lockscreen and rotate the wallpaper images.

This week's roundup focuses in on a selection of Windows Phone 8 apps that helps keep your lockscreen wallpaper fresh. All are either free or have a trial version to let you try things out first. The selection continues to grow and if we've missed your favorite lockscreen app, feel free to chime in below in the comments.

You think I’m just going to sit idly by and let Rich have all the fun with wallpapers? Not a chance. Here are some similar wallpapers to the ones he did the other day, but I would wager raise the bar on minimalism. Just our kickass Windows Phone Central logo set to the background color of your choice.

Windows Phone Lockscreen apps seem to be appearing out of nowhere these days.  You have Befriend, Paper Shuffle, Lock Themes and now you can add Flickr to the growing number of wallpaper sources. Flickr Live Wallpaper is a lockscreen wallpaper app that pulls images from the popular online photography source.

The nice thing about Flickr Live Wallpaper is that you can name your photo source, use multiple sources and if need be, crop the photos so they fit a little better on the screen.

Mush is probably the most charming platformer in the mobile Xbox Live lineup – and it’s an exclusive to boot. Developer Angry Mango has kindly provided Windows Phone Central with some exclusive goodies to share with you.

First off, Mush is a generally easy game. Like ilomilo you can’t die, so the challenge comes entirely from the puzzles. It does get harder as you progress though – take the puzzle at the end of Level 5: Catfish Capers, for example. Getting the ball where it needs to go in order to activate a switch and open the door might just stump some gamers. Fear not; the above video shows exactly what to do. Whichever lovable writer got stuck on this puzzle was most certainly overthinking things.

Next up we have a bevy of beautiful Windows Phone-sized wallpapers. Check ‘em out after the break.

Since Windows Phone users can't spend a lot of time customizing their OS (instead we live our lives), there's much focus on the lock-screen. We know we change ours every few days (we use Ffffound for inspiration).

Today, Microsoft has announced a partnership with London based graphic designer Levi Freeman and as a result, they've released eight "officially sanctioned" wallpapers to spiffy up your Windows Phone.

The eight images are nature focused so they may not appeal to everyone (we're more into abstract art here). Still, the designs are nice and they're meant to look perfect on your phone. What's more, the images all have a corresponding QR code for easy download (see, not even Microsoft uses Tag). Plus Microsoft notes that they hope more of these collaborations will happen with Levi, meaning we can probably expect different themes in the future--we like that idea. Levi also plans to release desktop versions too.

There's some interesting tidbits about the inspiration for each image and details about Freeman at his site, so hop on over to grab those images and learn a little bit about their origins.

It wasn't easy but we've look through all the entries in the Samsung Focus S giveaway and have identified the winning entry. The contest called for readers to submit thier WPCentral lockscreen wallpaper in this Forums discussion. We were simply amazed at the quality and number of entries submitted. Over 270 entries were submitted and picking the best was tough.

First, we would like to thank AT&T for providing the Samsung Focus S (they were impressed with the quality and volume of entries as well) and the WPCentral Accessory Store for providing the prizes for the runner-ups.  To find out who won, you're gonna have to head past the break.

It's well known Windows Phone is missing some apps that we'd like to see. A few weeks ago we were missing a solid app for the site Ffffound and decided on a whim to ask developers to make one. RogueCode answered our app-request and bam...here we are.

If you have never been to the site Ffffound (www.ffffound.com) you should take a moment and do just that, don't worry, we'll wait. Okay, as you can see, Ffffound is a site dedicated to pop art, photography and image design. Some really interesting pics are curated there and they more often than not they tend to make exciting wallpapers for your Windows Phone Lock-screen, hence our interest in wanting an app. Within a few days of RogueCode taking us up on our offer and tossing some ideas back and forth between us and him, he had a finalized app that was ready.  And darn it all, it's a gorgeous little thing--fast, smooth and intuitive to use.

The app features the ability to save, favorite and even share any images, not to mention it is easy to navigate and surprisingly fast, even over 3G. The app features a Live Tile too that flips over revealing the latest image on the site. So if you're into pop art, interesting images or photography, or you're just looking for a sweet resource for wallpapers, this is your app. You can grab it here for $0.99 with a free trial in the Marketplace. Also check out his other apps, like Tweet This Song.

Oh and we're thinking of making this a regular feature: we ask a developers to make an app, work with them on design and features and then we highlight it on the site. Anyone else think that's a good idea?

We're always looking to refresh our lock screen on our ten Windows Phones. Okay, well you probably don't have that big of a problem but still, if you're like us and a bit geeky, these "minimalist" Star Wars wallpapers will suit your needs.

Created by Rafal Rola and cropped/re-sized by 1800PocketPC, there are the six posters for the Star Wars films (although lets be honest, there are only three real films, amiright?) and another nine for specific characters, including yes, Mr. Bobba Fett (Boba Fett, where?!).

So haul yourself on over, get your downloading on and represent some Star Wars.

Taiwanese blog I Heart Windows Phone has released a set of three Halloween-themed wallpapers for Windows Phone 7. All three feature what appears to be the site’s mascot in different costumes, drawn with an attractive cartoonish art style. These wallpapers are an adorable way to show your Halloween spirit on the go, perhaps as you make a trip to the store to pick up some candy for the trick-or-treaters.

To get the images, use one of the following methods:

  1. Visit the blog on your phone (Google Translate it for a nice introduction to Halloween for foreign readers)
  2. Tap on one of the images to display the full version
  3. Tap and hold on the image and then select ‘save picture.’
  4. Once saved, find the image in your phone’s Photo section
  5. Tap the … button at the bottom of the screen to bring up the menu
  6. Select ‘use as wallpaper’

OR

  1. Download the zip file from your phone using this link
  2. Select one of the three images
  3. Tap the … button at the bottom of the screen to bring up the menu
  4. Select ‘use as wallpaper.’

We're kind of big fans of the app "...I'm a WP7!" as it's elegantly designed, feature rich and well, it's free. We mentioned v3.2 a few weeks ago, including some new features that were on the way and today, you can grab that update.

Here are the new additions:

  • Download Wallpapers & Ringtones
  • Task “Extras” like Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode access, even a fun little WP7 Flashlight
  • The GamerHub™ (this is a BIG COOL FEATURE) with Gamer “MeetUps”
  • Tons of Live Tile integration, essentially all areas can now be pinned: Messaging, Forums, GamerHub™, Tips & Tricks

The gamer meetups are pretty awesome--basically if you're a Gears of War fan, or enjoy online multiplayers, it's a quick way to call up a bunch of folks from the community for a match up. You also get gamer news integrated right into the app, which is convenient.

But for the wallpapers and ringtones alone, it seems silly not to pick up this app. Grab it here in the Marketplace.

Picasso inspired WP7 wallpapers

Pablo Picasso inspired many, and still remains to do so with both his work and approach to art. ILoveWP at Pixnet have published some Windows Phone wallpapers using the site mascot called Tiler. The designs are on parr with what Picasso is famous for and with the optional transparency they look awesome on WP handsets.

All hail the Cubist movement! We have the following:

Transparent collection

Mozart-the titanium (Music Hub)

Van Gogh-the titanium (XBOX LIVE)

Fanny-a TI (Picture Hub)

Nicole sunshine-a titanium and Goodall-a TI (People Hub)
