Curious what the weather patterns are like in Atar, Mauritania? Well there's a Windows Phone weather app that will tell you the weather stats for more than 26,000 cities world wide. Weather Stats published by Kitya is an app that will provide you with available weather stats on that particular location.  Weather Stats comes in handy if you're traveling and need to know what type of weather you're in store for.

Windows Phone App Review: Weather26

The Windows Phone app Weather26 (pronounced Weather two six) provides you with a quick option to view the two and six day forecasts from your phone. The weather data is provided by met.no and Weather26 covers a healthy number of international locations. While Weather26 lacks all the weather bells and whistles of Accuweather or The Weather Channel, it's a decent basic weather app for your Windows Phone.

MSN Weather, like all of those MSN app, are actually pretty cool little offerings--they're Metro, minimalist and do what they're suppose to do. In 2010, MSN Weather was for many their first weather app. Not much has happened though in terms of updates, which is a shame since Mango offers a lot e.g. Live Tiles.

That's why we became a little excited to see an image of an updated version that is coming down the road. In the above screenshot from Microsoft's Jeff Wilcox (of 4th & Mayor fame), we see that it finally now has that Live Tile with the current temperature, making this app very useful for many and a good free alternative. No other details are known currently but the app is being beta tested meaning release in probably only a few weeks away.

It's great to see Microsoft finally updating some of these apps though we think it would have looked better 4 months ago.

Update: Regarding Jeff's grey theme, there's no shenanigans there. That is simply one of the theme's on his unlocked Lumia 800 purchased through Expansys. While that's a great theme, he did lose out by not having the "Nokia Blue" accent color.

Windows Phone App Review: Vadret

"Vadret" is Swedish for "weather" (which I've probably mispronounced terribly) and Vadret is a simple but nicely laid out weather app for your Windows Phone. It gives you quick and easy access to your basic weather conditions and forecasts for up to five of your favorite worldwide locations.

When you first launch Vadret you are prompted to go to the Settings Menu where you will choose your cities, establish the general layout of the app, how you want your live tiles to look, and which of the eleven backgrounds you want to use.

WeatherMaster gets bumped to v2.0

WeatherMaster is a simple, yet detailed weather app for your Windows Phone. When we first took a look at WeatherMaster we found it to be a very nice weather app choice for your Windows Phone.  WeatherMaster was recently updated to version 2.0 to bring mango features into the mix.

Some of the key features to the update include:

  • You can add new cities/locations (unlimited) or use your current position (GPS) as well
  • Seven day forecast with detailed view and temperature chart
  • US and Metric units are supported (Fahrenheit/Celsius, mile/km)
  • Mango Live Tile support with current weather condition and two days forecast info for selected city / current location
  • Pin as many Live Tiles (with city weather) as you want
  • Weather Map with Weather/Cloud/US Radar layers to check out nearby locations quickly
  • Supports Dark/Light mode and Tile icon uses your Accent color as background to integrate perfectly
  • Intelligent caching of weather data to avoid unnecessary data transfer

You still can't animate the radar layer on the weather map view (maybe in the next update) but it's nice to be able to add locations to your city list from the map view.  There is a free, two-week trial version available that is fully functional. The full version of WeatherMaster is running $1.99 and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

World Weather - Review

We touched briefly touched on the Windows Phone weather app, World Weather, earlier this year. It's a handy, basic weather app that covers locations world wide. World Weather was recently updated to version 2.5 adding mango features such as fast resume and multiple live tile support. The app also received a major facelift in design and added new features beyond what Mango has brought to the table.

To see if the changes to World Weather helped or hurt, slide on past the break.

Weather Channel App gets mangofied

We've received numerous tips this morning on the Windows Phone weather app Weather. Weather is the official Weather Channel app for your Windows Phone and it has been updated to version 1.7. The update Mangofies the app.

There are a few cosmetic changes to the app but the most noticeable change is the Mango fast resume and multiple live tile support. You can now pin any forecast city to your Start Menu and un-pin the tile from with the Weather.

From your location list, go into the edit screen and you'll see three options. One to give the location a nickname, one to set the location as your default location, and another to show as a live tile. Check the box to show the location as a live tile, save and the tile is created on your Start Screen. Un-check the box and the tile is removed.

The live tile has two sides. The front shows your current conditions and the back shows a radar thumbnail for that particular location. I'm a little surprised that the back side shows a radar image. If you've got clear skies, it seems a waste of resources. If there's a way to customize or change what's displayed on the back side of the live tile, I haven't found it yet.

All in all, the update improves things.  Overall, Weather seems to have a little more zip to it and while the cosmetic changes are minor, they give the app somewhat of a cleaner appearance.

Weather is a free, ad-supported application for your Windows Phone and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace. Keep in mind you'll need to update your phone to Windows Phone 7.5 before you can use Weather v1.7.

Thanks to everyone who tipped us on this!

Accuweather.com brings Mango into the forecast

The popular Windows Phone weather app, Accuweather.com, has gone Mango. The update gives the app the fast resume feature and, most notably, the ability to pin multiple weather tiles to your Start Screen.

Just go to your locations, tap hold on a forecast city and you can choose to pin the location to your Start Screen and give it a custom name. Tapping on one of these tiles launches the Accuweather.com app and sets the weather information to that location.

Accuweather.com is a free application for your Windows Phone and you can download it here at the Windows Phone Web Marketplace.  If you happen to see any additional changes to Accuweather.com feel free to share in the comments.

Thanks goes out to Miguel for tipping us on this!

The developers of the Windows Phone weather app, Photoweather, have a new weather app in the works for Windows Phone Mango. At this point, we aren't sure if this will be an update to Photoweather or a stand alone app. The app is close to being submitted for certification and while there are a few bugs present, we thought we'd offer you a preview of Photoweather Live.

For those not familiar, Photoweather is a basic weather app for your Windows Phone. Photoweather not only offers you the current conditions and forecast for your selected city but also photos of local attractions. Photoweather Live will bring Mango features into the mix but as well as giving things a bit of a face lift. Instead of having all the information displayed on one page, you now have the same information spread out across three pages.

The Today Page provides you with the current conditions for your forecast city, the Week Page offers a four day forecast, and the About Page provides the local photos. Settings touch on using your Windows Phone location data, turning on/off an illustrated background, and how you want the weather information displayed.

The new Live Tile and Push Notifications allow you to pin weather tiles for each forecast city on your Start Screen. One side of the tile will display an icon for your current conditions and temp. The other side offers your forecast for the day.

Live notifications can be customized to alert you when a particular weather condition exists for a location. The conditions include not only weather forecasts (snow, rain, storms, etc.) but also will alert on a particular temperature. Additional updates are already in the planning stages that should give Photoweather Live the ability to use your photos as the background image or add your photos to the local photo mix.

We aren't sure of the timing for Photoweather Live but wanted to share what was headed to the Marketplace. For the time being you can find the pre-Mango version of Photoweather here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Our favorite weather app Weather Live (previous coverage), is about to hit the big v3.0 today. This new version is for the Mango peeps out there, bringing some excellent new functionality to the Metro themed weather program. New features include:

  • Multiple locations with secondary tiles (in paid version).
  • Display location, next forecast (today or tomorrow) and alerts in the back tiles.
  • Background Agent to automatically update locations when you are on the go (in paid version).

As you can see in the video hands on above, the new tiles add some excellent options to the mix and with fast-app resuming and improved Mango scrolling, the app is better than ever. Expect version 3.0 to appear today or tomorrow. You can pick up Weather Live here in the Marketplace (both paid and unlimited trial).

Hurricane Season on your Windows Phone

With Hurricane Irene knocking on the East Coast's door, we thought we would take a look at two hurricane tracking apps for your Windows Phone. Two apps stood out when we searched the Marketplace, Hurricane Tracker and Hurricane Software.

Granted if you're already using the Weather Channel app, there is a Tropical Summary within the app's Severe Weather Center that will give you a decent amount of information on hurricanes.  You also have other weather apps (here's our roundup) that will also touch on tropical systems.  But these two apps focus solely on global tropical systems.

To read more on Hurricane Tracker and Hurricane Software, blow on past the break.

USA Today updated to v1.1, gets a live tile

USA Today has received an update to kick-start August into motion. The most notable feature added in this version is live tile support. You will now be able view latest headlines in a photo mash-up. The full list of changes/features added are as follows:

  • Live Tile - A photo mash-up based on our latest headlines
  • Latest news videos on a dedicated video panel
  • Sub-section headlines: hold down any of the section tiles to bring up a list of sub-sections to choose from, i.e. Sports > MLB headlines. Tile will default to that subsection.
  • Photo caption and credit for articles
  • Recall last league viewed in Scores
  • Major League Soccer scores added
  • Celsius toggle for weather temps
  • Support for international weather locations (limited maps)
  • Weather alerts on current conditions screen
  • Various bug fixes

Be sure to keep up-to-date with the latest news, sport headlines and weather forecasts. You can download USA Today (Zune link), for free, from the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to David and everyone else who tipped us on this!

We revealed the new v1.3 of WeatherLive the other day. It brings some great new customizable features to the Live Tile and find your location based on city instead of coordinates.

The good news is it's now available in the Marketplace -- still the same deal as before: free with ads, or $0.99 with no ads, either one gets you a swanky Metro Live Tile. Get it now right here.

Good news for you Weather Channel fans as that app gets a bump to version 1.5 today. Not too much has changed but there is a whole new section called iWitness Weather (cute). Basically it's localized pics people took of, well, the weather in your area. Sub-sections include nearby, featured and categories. Oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be a way to upload photos to the feature, which makes it a one way street for now.

The photos are kind of interesting, though we see some shots of dogs and people too meaning "verification" seems lax. Not exactly a killer feature, but nice anyways. And is it us or is the animated-weather new? You can grab the update in the Marketplace here.

(Thanks, David M., for the heads up!)

Update: You can download v1.2 in the Marketplace right now. V1.3 is pending approval.

This should brighten everyone's day, even if it is rainy where you are. 'Weather Live', one of the most popular weather apps in the Marketplace, should be returning within the next few days, pending Marketplace approval.

To refresh, 'Weather Live' came out a few weeks ago, we covered it and you folks agreed that it was pretty great as it skyrocketed to the #1 Weather app in the Marketplace. It was then pulled by the developer due to issues with the weather feed--specifically it was from Google and they were cutting off some access. In order to prevent mass outages from new users, the developer pulled it until further notice.

Since then, the developer has found a workaround for the back-end, meaning that should not be an issue any longer. In addition, new features are on board--many of which have been requested by you:

  • Location/city name based on GPS coordinates
  • Live Tile customizations

The first fixes the issue whereby you just had geo-coordinates instead of a city name. This gives users piece of mind that the app has the correct location. The second will allow people to set 12/24 hr time and turn on/off time stamp, temp range and temperature scale--giving you much more control over the look. Most excellent.

Check the updated screenshots to get an idea. We'll keep you posted when it's live in the Marketplace!

Here we go again. The rabidly popular 'Weather Live' app which we reported on last week has disappeared from the Marketplace. The app, which started off at 3 stars quickly rose up in popularity, even bumping the #1 in News & Weather WPCentral app to #2--a first since we released our app months ago.

Now, despite receiving an update or two (we forget), the app is gone from the Marketplace without a trace. Was it the pulling weather data from an un-credited source? Did it violate the Marketplace rules? We're not sure but we hope it returns and soon as it's one of our favorites. The current version still works on your device though, so don't uninstall. This is one of numerous apps that have disappeared recently, including the Colbert Report, MTV News, Kayak, Project Sunburst and Cartoon TV (before it returned, gutted).

We've reached out to the developer for comment and we'll hopefully post a response if/when they get back to us.

Update: We've heard back from the developer--

"The app is using the undocumented (but very popular) Google weather API and late yesterday, there was a major outage at the back end. As such, all live tiles stopped working at the time. I suspect it is because Google blocked my server's access since I have ~1500 queries per hour on the hour...

I made several changes to alleviate the peak load and fortunately they seem to unblocked me this morning. So live tiles started working again. To hopefully ensure users are not subject to the downtime any more, I pulled the app from marketplace.

I do want to come back as this project is really a worthy one to me. However, I am trying to find a good source of data. As you may know, many of them prohibit use by mobile applications."

(Thanks, @Sogeman, for the heads up!)

Weather Live - a Metro inspired weather app

Sure we have Weather Channel, Weather Bug and AccuWeather, plus a few other indy weather apps in the Marketplace (e.g. World Weather), but we don't have too many (if any?) Metro-inspired weather programs. 'Weather Live' by Hyperise fills the niche and we're going to personally vouch for it as our new lil' favorite.

First, we should mention that this app doesn't have NextRAD, live cams, 14-day weather forecast with pollen counts. Nope, this is a simple, streamlined program that shows you current conditions and the next 3-days--that's it. So if you need more, this won't be for you.

So why is it good? For one, it turns out we only look at current conditions and the next 3-day most of the time anyways. Two, it's lightning fast, pulling only ~12kb a day when used hourly with the Live Tile. This means we can launch it and have it update within a blink of the eye.

Oh yeah and it has a cool live tile that shows you a weather icon and below it (from left to right) current temp, day high/low and time of last update. You can also set the update schedule from once a day, twice a day, four times a day or hourly. Upon an  update, it pings your aGPS location, meaning you never have to set your city--it basically follows you wherever (alternatively, you can set a city of your choosing). Sure, we'd like to see a few more options like 12 hour time and perhaps a more prominent current temp, etc. Hopefully the dev plans to add some features with future updates.

Weather Live comes in two versions too: free, completely functional with ads (nice) or you can pay $0.99 to remove the ads. We did the latter because we liked it so much, but hey, the option is up to you, right? So if you need a quick weather app that blends with your default Metro tiles, here you go. Find it here in the Marketplace.
