weather

Here we go again. The rabidly popular 'Weather Live' app which we reported on last week has disappeared from the Marketplace. The app, which started off at 3 stars quickly rose up in popularity, even bumping the #1 in News & Weather WPCentral app to #2--a first since we released our app months ago.

Now, despite receiving an update or two (we forget), the app is gone from the Marketplace without a trace. Was it the pulling weather data from an un-credited source? Did it violate the Marketplace rules? We're not sure but we hope it returns and soon as it's one of our favorites. The current version still works on your device though, so don't uninstall. This is one of numerous apps that have disappeared recently, including the Colbert Report, MTV News, Kayak, Project Sunburst and Cartoon TV (before it returned, gutted).

We've reached out to the developer for comment and we'll hopefully post a response if/when they get back to us.

Update: We've heard back from the developer--

"The app is using the undocumented (but very popular) Google weather API and late yesterday, there was a major outage at the back end. As such, all live tiles stopped working at the time. I suspect it is because Google blocked my server's access since I have ~1500 queries per hour on the hour...

I made several changes to alleviate the peak load and fortunately they seem to unblocked me this morning. So live tiles started working again. To hopefully ensure users are not subject to the downtime any more, I pulled the app from marketplace.

I do want to come back as this project is really a worthy one to me. However, I am trying to find a good source of data. As you may know, many of them prohibit use by mobile applications."

(Thanks, @Sogeman, for the heads up!)

Weather Live - a Metro inspired weather app

Sure we have Weather Channel, Weather Bug and AccuWeather, plus a few other indy weather apps in the Marketplace (e.g. World Weather), but we don't have too many (if any?) Metro-inspired weather programs. 'Weather Live' by Hyperise fills the niche and we're going to personally vouch for it as our new lil' favorite.

First, we should mention that this app doesn't have NextRAD, live cams, 14-day weather forecast with pollen counts. Nope, this is a simple, streamlined program that shows you current conditions and the next 3-days--that's it. So if you need more, this won't be for you.

So why is it good? For one, it turns out we only look at current conditions and the next 3-day most of the time anyways. Two, it's lightning fast, pulling only ~12kb a day when used hourly with the Live Tile. This means we can launch it and have it update within a blink of the eye.

Oh yeah and it has a cool live tile that shows you a weather icon and below it (from left to right) current temp, day high/low and time of last update. You can also set the update schedule from once a day, twice a day, four times a day or hourly. Upon an  update, it pings your aGPS location, meaning you never have to set your city--it basically follows you wherever (alternatively, you can set a city of your choosing). Sure, we'd like to see a few more options like 12 hour time and perhaps a more prominent current temp, etc. Hopefully the dev plans to add some features with future updates.

Weather Live comes in two versions too: free, completely functional with ads (nice) or you can pay $0.99 to remove the ads. We did the latter because we liked it so much, but hey, the option is up to you, right? So if you need a quick weather app that blends with your default Metro tiles, here you go. Find it here in the Marketplace.

Accuweather for WP7 joins the crowd

It has been on heck of a week over at the Windows Phone Marketplace. From Angry Birds to Best Buy as well as Fox News and the New York Times, we've seen a lot of new apps hit the Marketplace.  Even Major League Baseball got into the act.

Closing the week out Accuweather for Windows Phone 7 has blown into the Marketplace. The popular weather website is now mobile bringing you a ton of weather related information.

Features include:

  • Accurate and localized forecasts for all global locations. Forecasts include hourly forecasts for the next twenty-four hours, plus day and night weather forecasts and information for the next ten days. All updated hourly.
  • Panoramic views with easy swiping between your stored locations (up to seven plus your current GPS location).
  • Current weather conditions include time, temperature, wind speed, wind gust speed, and wind direction; humidity, visibility, UV Index, cloud cover, pressure, and sunrise and sunset.
  • Severe Weather Alarms for all global locations and severe Weather Alerts for the U.S. – visible from all screens.
  • Special lifestyle forecasts, such as conditions for specific sports and other outdoor activities.

You also have animated radar, satellite maps, interactive Bing Maps, and weather videos. The day and night forecasts include precipitation amounts, wind data, and Accuweather's RealFeel temps. This takes various weather conditions such as wind, humidity and other factors to give you an idea how it feels outside.

We'll give Accuweather for WP7 a test drive over the holiday weekend and get a video review up shortly. In the meantime, you can download your free copy of Accuweather for WP7 here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to Tahiti Bob for the tip!

We've seen our share of Metro spin-offs for your Windows desktop (see Firefox skin, RainMeter) and heck, Windows 8 is going to have a Metro-inspired UI to it to boot. But for those wanting a quick way to update today, you can run this free weather app right on your desktop that heavily lifts from your precious Windows Phone UI.

The app is simple enough, not even an installation. Just download and extract the folder to your \Programs (or wherever) and run the main .exe file. From there, right click to get options and setup your location and preferences, then hit "refresh" on each panel to get it up to date.

Heck, it even bounces up and down like the Metro UI, so we're giving this a big thumbs up--it looks great, works well and is simple.

Note: the app auto-updates, you only need to manually refresh if you change anything in settings. You can even set the weather-update interval.

The Weather Channel app for Windows Phone 7 was updated today and recieved a major facelift. Along with a graphic wallpaper that reflects current conditions, the update brings Facebook and Email sharing to the app.

Version 1.4.0 has a cleaner appearance and load times appear to be improved as well. The App continues to provide access to mobile versions of the Weather Channel's Severe Weather Center and weather videos but the updated version drops the traffic cam access.

Locations can be entered by keyword, zip code or by using your Windows Phone's location services. The Weather Channel App still has a Live Tile and an animated radar with several display layers to choose from.  You still have that pesky ad banner up top but hey... it's a free app.

You can find your copy of The Weather Channel app here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace. Thanks, Dave, for the heads up!

Windows Phones in times of emergency

It shouldn't be a surprise when someone comments that your Windows Phone is a great communications tool. From using the Phone as a phone to call friends, family and associates to checking your email to updating your Facebook Status, your Windows Phone keeps you in touch. While the abilities and capabilities of communications is tremendous during day to day life, it can also be very helpful in times of crisis. I personally discovered how useful my Windows Phone can be during recent events in my home State.

On April 27, 2011 the Southern States experienced a severe weather outbreak of historic proportions where storms produced a record three hundred twelve tornadoes. Alabama experienced a tornado outbreak that the State and possibly the nation has never seen before. One tornado tracked on the ground for over one hundred thirty miles in North Alabama destroying everything in its path. Another traveled over eighty miles destroying communities in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. While property damage was extensive and catastrophic, the greatest loss was that over 300 perished in these storms.

That day started for me around 5:45am when the first line of storms came through my neighborhood and produced a tornado with winds reaching 120mph. We lost power as these storms tossed trees around as if they were match sticks. With no power, my Samsung Focus became my only means of communication. While I can't say that one application was more important than the next, my Windows Phone helped me stay in touch with family, check on the severe weather, and make it around the house when night fell.

Weather4me - Review

Weather4me is a basic weather app for your Windows Phone that provides current conditions, what to expect for the rest of the day and a five day forecast for cities worldwide.

Weather4me pulls weather information from Accuweather.com and has a direct link to Accuweather's website for more detailed information. The apps lays the information out in a three page hub. Cities are searchable by name or zip code and you can build up a list of favorites to make switching from city to city easier.

Although we have the staples like WeatherBug and The Weather Channel, there has been...lets just say, less attention given to 3rd party weather apps on the Windows Phone platform. Sure, there are a few out there, but the competition/creativity is nothing like Twitter or tabbed-browser development.

So WeatherDuck is the first 3rd party weather app that caught out eye. It's nothing radically amazing, but rather simple, light and fast. The app is free with ads (we'd like to see a non-ad version for $0.99) and even boasts a Live Tile seen above. One thing we like is how the Live Tile matches your accent color, making it look more natural (though WeatherBug's "ambient" weather color is kind of neat). [Note: default is Celsius, which is why is says 5 degrees above--we're waiting for the LT to refresh for Fahrenheit]

The app doesn't give super details--rather just days broken into four increments 2am, 8am, 2pm and 8pm along with temperature, wind direction/speed and precipitation. Point being, it's free, light and it works so we think you should at least take a look if you're looking for an alternative. Grab it here in the Marketplace.

HTC has updated their Windows Phone 7 Sense Hub to version 1.5. The update has minor fixes and the option to have a Live Tile that displays your current weather conditions.

The app now supports automatic location based weather that will update the Tile every hour, every three hours, six hours, twelve hours, pr once a day. You can set the Live Tile to your location or manually to another location.

It definitely helps give the HTC Hub a little more functionality.

Software Review (Windows Phone 7): AP Mobile

We first looked at AP Mobile when it launched for Windows Mobile. The news reader presented today's news and weather in a well laid out fashion. AP Mobile has made the transition to Windows Phone 7 and is a free app over at the Marketplace.

One of the nice design features of Windows Phone 7 is the metro or hub design. It allows applications to lay out information in an easily accessible manner that is easy to navigate around. AP Mobile takes full advantage of this design.

The main hub of AP Mobile consists of:

  • The Front Page: Here is where your top stories are listed.
  • Media Pages: This is a gallery of images from the day's stories.
  • Category Page: Here is the break down of the broad headline categories. They include such items as your local news, weather showbiz, and technology. Your search command and settings menu also rests on this page.

To see what type impression AP Mobile for Windows Phone 7 left with us, ease on past the break.

The Weather Channel is offering a free weather application for Windows Phone 7 over at the Marketplace. The application makes the most out of the hub system providing local weather information, forecasts, radar maps, locations, and menus to other Weather Channel services. In addition, you have a live tile that can be pinned to your Start Screen which will display the current temperature and a icon representing current conditions.

One great way to make the most of your Windows Phone is to keep track of the weather. Weatherbug has been a staple application for me on Windows Mobile and has made the transition to Windows Phone 7.

Weatherbug on Windows Phone 7 looks really good and takes full advantage of the Hub layout by offering a lot of weather information on the side-swipable pages. Throw in the live tile and you can stay up to date with the temperature and forecast for the day at a glance.

Weatherbug pulls information from thousands of global weather stations and when first installed Weatherbug, you will be asked to set your location.  You can do this by either accepting the location determined by your Windows Phone aGPS or manually enter a location.  At anytime you need to edit or add locations, just tap on your location name that appears on the main page.

Hot on the heels of the WeatherChannel's new WP7 app comes rival WeatherBug (see video demo here for WP7). Not too much is given in the way of screenshots, except what we see above, but it looks like it will be a winner for its complete feature set. We know we've always liked Weatherbug on Windows Mobile and we're happy to see to them offer the same functionality on our new OS.

Bonus features include:

  • Weather info on the Start screen (Live tile)
  • Push notifications for weather alerts (nice)
  • Nine (!) weather map layers using Bing maps
  • 7 day, hourly and detailed forecasts
  • Enhanced current conditions

No word if they will have the ~$1.99 "Elite" version which throws a few more features in as well as removes those banner ads--but we sure hope they do.

Add Windows Phone 7 to The Weather Channel's mobile weather app line-up (well, we saw it yesterday, but now it's "official"). The ad-support application is free and available at the Marketplace. Claiming to provide the most reliable, accurate weather forecasts available, The Weather Channel app features:

  • Animated, interactive maps can be customized by weather layers such as radar and clouds, temperature, wind speed and recent precipitation
  • Detailed weather data in hourly, 36-hour and 10-day forecasts, as well as current conditions including temperature, wind, humidity, UV level, dew point, visibility, sunrise and sunset
  • A panoramic view screen and background weather images, the app is visually attractive and takes advantage of Microsoft's new user interface capabilities
  • Traffic cameras for local roads and highways (for supported markets)
  • Share weather information via e-mail to keep friends updated on weather effects
  • Save favorite locations for quick access to the most relevant weather
  • Video center with local and regional forecasts featuring TWC on-camera meteorologists
  • A severe weather center with updates on tropical systems, winter weather and more.

Future updates for the mobile weather app include a hurricane central section with tropical tracking info, integration with The Weather Channel's iWitness Weather Community and support for Spanish, German and French languages.

It will be interesting to see how this app compares to the Weatherbug app that will also be available for Windows Phone 7.
