windows phone

The other day we mentioned how the Windows Phone team was preparing the first wave of an ad campaign, with the slogan of Windows Phone being "reinvented around you". To jog your memory, the two videos we've seen so far feature Gwen Stefani and Jessica Alba. We've just received word that those videos will begin airing tonight in the U.S. with new ones featuring Andy Samberg and Cam Newton coming in later weeks.

You can also look for additional ads to start appearing in the UK, France and Germany. What's interesting, is that Microsoft will take a local approach to those markets and use relevant celebrities and apps to highlight the platform.

A presentation slide, reportedly from Nokia training material, has been leaked containing details of some features included in the upcoming Windows Phone 7.8 update. Microosft has promised to those who own Windows Phone 7.x handsets that more features are on the way to keep the experience current. While features highlighted are already known, it's good to see official confirmation through said material.

Huawei Ascend W1 to make an appearance at CES 2013

As one of the Microsoft's launch partners along with Nokia, Samsung and HTC, Huawei has been an awfully mysterious company in the Windows Phone ecosystem. First there was complete silence for a long time, then we had the whole situation in the US.

On Friday, AT&T launched the Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and HTC 8X Windows Phones.  To celebrate, Windows Phone Central held an impromtu contest where three readers who commented on our launch day post, would be selected at random to win a $50 gift card to the WPCentral Accessory Store.

While over 650 comments were posted and many readers were successful in finding their new AT&T Windows Phone, only three would walk away with the gift cards.

The Dutch Windows Phone website has revealed something interesting. Orange and green versions of the HTC 8S.

We've seen the 8S in yellow, black/white, red, and blue but could this be an indication that more colors are headed to the HTC 8S rainbow? We haven't seen any new colors added to the various pre-order listings such as the one over at Expansys.

The green version is growing on me, but what do you think? Do the green or orange colors appeal to you more than the blue, yellow or black/white versions?

Thanks, Mark, for the tip!

Microsoft seems to be taking its Skype acquisition and integrating it further into the arsenal of products and services the company offers - namely Messenger (or Windows Live Messenger). An article has been published on the Skype blog detailing what's on the horizon for Messenger users who now have the opportunity to connect to their Microsoft Account within the Skype client.

Live Tiles have been a much loved feature in Windows Phone since the platform launched back in 2010. Microsoft has since improved the functionality by extending the column support from two to four, enabling more tiles to be present on-screen at any one time. But how did Live Tiles in Windows Phone 8 come about at Microsoft?

(Concept Surface phone by YrOnimuS)

Back in October, China Times reported that Microsoft was working on a self-branded Windows Phone for release sometime in 2013. Shortly after, tech site BGR also reported that they had heard similar information. Likewise, we went on record with our own source stating that indeed, Microsoft has a device in the works.

Now, the venerable Wall Street Journal is going on record with a source of their own stating that Microsoft “…is working with component suppliers in Asia to test its own smartphone design” although they are unsure if they are going to go into production with it. The device is reportedly between 4 and 5 inches, which as far as phones go is quite vague. No other details were provided and of course, Microsoft had no comment.

We are always on the lookout for pricing and availability information for the upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices but this one has taken us by surprise.

How does 20,000.00 Euros sound to you for a grey HTC 8s? It seems Amazon thinks that High-Rise Yellow has really got some value to it.

Nextgen Reader for Windows 8 now available in the Microsoft Store

Windows Phone always leant itself to reading and apps designed around reading due to its foundation being built on those Metro design principles for typography and layout.

Nextgen Reader has been a popular favourite with us at wpcentral and with readers alike. We just had a note today from the developers to say they have rescued Windows 8 users by launching their app in the store.

Before you get too excited, this isn’t a game, merely a one stop shop for all things Rovio and Angry Birds.

A video of what appears to be a rather unusual commercial is by Samsung has been uploaded to YouTube. The advertisement shows off he Samsung ATIV Windows product line-up. Using an odd script with cheesy acting, the company presents its Windows Phone 8 handset, Windows 8 tablets and laptops.

Microsoft has changed the icon used on Facebook for submissions published from a Windows Phone to the social network. We've grown accustomed to seeing a red Windows logo next to any status we send from the handset (via the People Hub), but now the new Windows logo in a purple theme replaces the dated branding. It certainly looks refreshing, but that's always the case with a visual change.
