wpcentral app

It's time for another update to our official Windows Phone app, and this one brings functionality many of you have requested: lock screen wallpapers. If you're a die-hard fan of the site and just can't get enough Windows Phone news, or even want to bring the news front and center for a week or so, you can enable our app as your wallpaper provider to get the latest headlines on your lock screen. Our wallpaper colours can also be customised with the full range of Windows Phone accents, and you'll even get article images appearing when you're using our flip tile. Find and enable all of these options from the app's settings screen.

That's not the only new feature thought, we've also finally included support for playing videos through Metrotube, switched to the Nokia advertising exchange (for free users only of course) and updated Unification support with in-line images. See below for the full changelist as well as a few samples of what you can do when customising our lock screen.

You may have noticed an update available for our app this morning, and perhaps you're curious as to what has changed? It's not the most exciting patch but we are aware of issues that users of 512MB devices have been experiencing with the app and are working hard to try and fix these problems. Patch 4.1.3 is intended to fix said problems by reducing the memory footprint of the app with slightly lower quality image when running on the lower spec devices such as the Lumia 520, 620 or 720.

If you have been experiencing any kind of crashes with the app please update to this version. However if that still doesn't work for you it would be incredibly helpful if you got in touch via app@wpcentral.com. As much as the 1 star reviews in the store make it clear you have a problem it makes it impossible for us to diagnose and fix that problem! Now that we've cleared that up, there were a couple of other things in the patch that were ready at the time, see below for the full changelist.

Over the weekend we gave you a sneak peak at version 4 of our official app for Windows Phone, and we're pleased to say it has now passed certification and is available on the marketplace right here.

So as always please download at your own leisure and enjoy the new features (which we've listed again below). Please note though that voice commands is a paid only feature and is currently only available in US and UK english, something which we're working to improve!

It's been a little while now since we last updated our official app for Windows Phone, but fear not as version 4.0 was submitted to the store earlier this week and is right now undergoing certification. Of course we know that just waiting is never as fun as seeing the changes for yourself so we've put together a quick video to demonstrate the headline features this time around.

So, keep reading past that break to see voice commands, new live tile options and Unification support in all their glory. We expect the app to be published next week and will of course post an article as soon as that happens reminding you to grab the update.

Happy Easter weekend everyone, fancy winning a free Lumia 920? Of course you do! Which is why you should be following Microsoft's Next App Star competition, where every vote gives you a chance to win one of Nokia's flagship devices. What you may not have realised is that you can vote once every round, so with round 4 voting starting up today you can head over to Facebook and vote for your favourite app in the quarter finals.

With round 4 the prizes for developers get big. The apps that win this round will all be featured on Microsoft's channel 9 show, and the 2 that win the next round will have their developers sent to Microsoft's developer conference with hotel and flights paid for (huge prize!). Round 4 is the quarter finals of this competition for which the end is very much in site, and you can find a full listing of the apps which have made it this far after the break.

The Windows Phone next app star competition is in full swing, today kick started round 3 of voting and we're thrilled to say that the official WPCentral app is still in the running!

Microsoft are offering the chance to win a free Lumia 920 everytime you vote and you can vote once each round so if you've not won yet then try voting again today! Each round an app wins nets new prizes for the developers as well, with the ultimate prize being a prime time TV commercial featuring the winning app.

As part of this promotion there is also a new marketplace collection showing all 64 finalists of the 9000+ original entrants. We've borrowed Microsoft's listing which you can see below, or even swipe right in our app and tap the "download app" button to see the full list. Please note that this is the most apps we've ever listed in one post so you might want to give the app a few seconds before tapping so it can retrieve all the names from Microsoft!

After launching the Windows Phone Next app star competition yesterday to some shaky technical hitches, the voting app on Facebook is now back and available for you to vote right now. Don't forget that voting gives you the chance to win a free Nokia Lumia 920, so it's definitely worth your time.

It's important to inform you that votes registered on the 19th of March will not count towards the winner, in the interest of fairness the vote count was reset by the competition's organisers. We are very lucky to have been chosen as one of the 64 finalists and are up against a game we hold in very high regard - ARMED, a tough match up in the first bracket!

Following on from our mostly successful launch of v3.8/9 of the Windows Phone Central app, there are a few loose ends to tie up in the code, thus we present the next update, v3.10 for Windows Phone 7 and v3.11 for Windows Phone 8. After a few problems with the store, everything looks to be resolved.

Whilst we're afraid we can't promise any exciting new features, we have resolved several problems, some of which we know were frustrating our community a little! You can pick up the update here in the store (either the free version or paid) or see below for the full changelist, and please consider voting for the app in Microsoft's next app star competition.

Windows Phone Central's app support inbox has been flooded recently, by users complaining that news does not load correctly in the app. We've been kind of stumped on this one frankly because it's only been affecting certain users, so we've been digging.

It turns out that other apps were also running into problems (WeatherFlow is one example), and as we dug further we identified that most of the affected users were Italian, and that the issue had started on March 1st. Now, thanks to twitter user @SergioPedri and others in our forums, we've finally been able to replicate the problem. The good news is there's a workaround.

On May 28th last year, following months of hard work, stress over designs and attempts to locate every possible bug, we released v1.1 of the WPCentral app into the marketplace (v1.0 was rejected due to some trademark issues). In no time at all, as a result of the incredible support of you, our readers, we were the number 1 paid app in the news & weather category.

Since then we've steadily released new updates, adding new features, refining the layout and of course listening to you, our trusted reader.

To celebrate our 1-year anniversary, we're happy to report that the WPCentral app is completely free for the next 24-hours (as opposed to the super-low $0.99 it normal fetches for). That's right, if you couldn't rationalize spending the dollar before for the app, your frugal-ness has paid off. Now you can unleash the whole app for $0 and lock that price in forever (depriving poor Jay of some hard-earned lager).

We just want to thank each and every one of you for your support over the last two-years (more so if you count WMExperts)--we really do appreciate it. And don't worry, we have a lot more coming your way both for the app and the site (cough, mid June, cough), so stay tuned and keep sending us your feedback.

Grab the official WPCentral App for free here in the Marketplace. Remember, this is only good for 24-hours starting now.

We released v2.2 only just 1 week ago, but thanks to a pesky "The parameter is incorrect" issue you may have encountered when tapping on a toast notification we're releasing a quick hot fix to the app to ensure functionality is restored!

So the change list for this version is much smaller than that of v2.2, but you can find it below:

  • Fixed a widespread issue where launching the app directly from a notification caused the app to crash
  • Implemented a workaround to optimise scrolling throughout the app, scrolling will no longer jump in any list (thanks to WPCentral reader 'rsuter' for suggesting this fix)
  • Fixed the about screen buttons
  • Improved social sharing by including the article title by default in the sharing screen
  • Comments now load all at once again as the new scrolling fixes the original issue
  • Added an option to always load high quality images when on Wifi
  • Added new wallpapers in the wallpapers section whilst we work on the community wallpapers functionality

None of the above would have happened without your feedback and comments, so please keep them coming!

You can pick up the app here in the marketplace, and if you enjoy using it, please rate & review us in the marketplace, we read every review from every marketplace and it keeps the new versions coming! Finally if there's something you're not so keen on you can let us know using the support options within the app.

Before you rush to your phone, it's not in the marketplace just yet! However I'm pleased to announce that the official WPCentral app v2.2 has been finalised and was submitted for certification 2 days ago.

So what's new this time around? We've been focusing on three key improvements: user experience, error reporting, and 256mb device compatibility. Most of these changes are a direct result of feedback or suggestions that our amazing community has sent us, so read on to find out exactly what's changed.

We're both flattered and excited to see that our own WPCentral App has been nominated in the 'news & entertainment' category for the March Madness contest by Nokia Conversations.

A total of 32 apps have been pitted against each other ranging from Carbon to Plants vz Zombies to IMdB. Voting will take place through out the week for the various categories with 'games' going on now. Our app is up against All About Windows Phone, which should have an interesting result (voting is in a few days). The winner will be crowned on April 2nd making this an exciting two-weeks of voting and teeth gnashing for all who are nominated.

We'd just like to extend our congratulations to our developer Jay Bennett and Rich Edmonds (who handled the graphics), as well as a thanks to Nokia Conversations for the nomination!

It's been just over a week since we released WPCentral v2.0 into the world, pushing up the total number of app downloads to over 30,000. Honestly myself and everyone involved have been absolutely blown away by the incredible feedback we've received on the site, via e-mail and of course in marketplace reviews. We couldn't be more thrilled that you guys are enjoying the new app and I wanted to say thank you one more time for the continued investment our community shows.

With that said, v2.0 is already being replaced, proving that if you want to find any mistakes in your code, just release it to the public to test in their masses!

You'll be able to download it from the marketplace right now here, but I know you're keen to know what's changed so here we go:

  • New: Added a refresh button to the comments pivot app bar
  • Several optimisations to the comments section to fix lagging performance with 100+ comments
  • Changed behaviour of the 'add comment' bubble to always be shown
  • Fixed a bug where duplicate comments could be posted
  • Fixed the offline section's pin button
  • Fixed the e-mail sharing functionality
  • When tapping the comments bubble you will now always see what you are typing
  • Fixed a bug in comments sign in where strong characters in passwords would fail
  • Changed the app bar to minimize when not needed but be visible for the comments refresh button
  • When enabled, the system tray is now transparent so as not to take up screen real estate
  • Fixed an issue where users could attempt to comment despite not being logged in
  • Fixed a bug where some users could not delete their comments

So I've been busy! As we've said before, v2.1 is here to tighten up the v2.0 release, with the exception of the comments refresh button it's all about tweaks and bug fixes.

However, coming in v2.2 should be the full wallpapers functionality as well as a couple of other small improvements that we're mulling over.

As always we hope you enjoy the app, and welcome your feedback in any form, whether direct to us through e-mail, site comments, or as a review on the Windows Phone marketplace.

If you're like us, you woke up this morning to an update for Version 2.0 our official WPCentral App. Developer (and podcast co-host) Jay Bennett has been hard at work these last few months incorporating all those changes and features that you've requested. In addition, new optimizations and layout changes have made the experience even better. So what's new? Let's cut to the chase...

  • Redesign of the app interface
  • Comments system with add, reply-to and delete (tap and hold to see more options)
  • Offline article reader
  • Brand new wallpapers section - more to come in v2.2
  • Customisable live tile
  • Articles with multiple Apps to download now provide a list for you to choose from
  • Added developers section
  • Multiple optimisations & speed improvements

As you can see, the BIG addition is the ability to finally comment on posts from within the app. Heck, you can reply to specific people and even delete your comment...hoorah! Plus with our new Live Tile system, the app will look even more pretty on your fancy Start screen. Not to be outdone though, Jay is already hard at work on v2.1 which will be some minor bug fixes, so expect that soon too. Then comes version 2.2 with our Wallpaper feed (previewed in the app now).

A big and personal thanks to Jay for all his hard work as well as staff writer Rich Edmonds for graphic design and Tom Kaminiski for handling the back-end details. The app is free/ad-supported/feature limited or it can be "unlocked" for $0.99 for the ad-free, full-featured version. Pick it up here in the Marketplace or scan below.

Something's amiss about Twitter...

Consider this a public announcement fellow Windows Phone users, you might notice some strange behaviour in several of your favourite Twitter-enabled apps, ours included.

We kept an eye on this story yesterday when we were alerted by Chris Field (the mind behind MehDoh) that he was spotting errors being returned by the Hammock library (a popular .NET library used for accessing RESTful web services). Specifically, it appears that Twitter have changed their API slightly, or introduced a small bug, which is causing errors when users try and log in to Twitter within third party apps.

The issue is not affecting everyone. In fact I can authorise all my Twitter apps and use all tweeting, replying and retweeting functionality, however I've also seen users of our v2.0 app beta sending me bug reports that are caused by this issue. If it happens to you, try again, it might authorise second time around.

Jump past the break if you want to know more...

Update: Closed Wow! what a response, I've already had over 200 applicants for the beta so in the interest of not disappointing too many people I'm closing applications. Please check out the video below for a demonstration of the app!

Merry Christmas everyone! It gives me great pleasure to announce to you that v2.0 of our app will be in beta in time for Christmas day, and I'm looking for 100 volunteers to try it out.

This build is not feature complete, in fact there are a couple of things in the works which we're not quite ready to show just yet. However the main purpose of this beta is to test two of the most important changes we're bringing:

  • A full comments system with replies (tap and hold an existing comment)
  • New, customisable live tile with images on the rear

Yes we were listening and we know comments is the most requested feature, and thanks to some site changes last month we're now finally able to deliver that feature.

Of course that's not all that's changed, and the other things you'll notice are...

Yes, another week, another small update to the official WPCentral app. Our developer Jay Bennett has been hard at work with fixes for the app since our site-overhaul and this makes things right again.  Here are the big difference with v1.8:

  • Bullet points and numbers are now aligned properly [Fix]
  • Toast notifications will now bring you to the article directly when tapped [Fix]

With that out of the way and the app looking snappy again, Jay is hard at work with the big v2.0 update, expected to bring commenting, amongst other new features. Have something you want for v2.0? Lets us know in comments and we'll consider it!

As usual, get the app here in the Marketplace for free (with ads) or unlock it for it $0.99 for more advanced features and ad-free.

By now you may have received the update notification for the WPCentral app. It has been bumped to v1.7 and you're probably wondering what's new? Unfortunately, no new features as this was a "hot fix" for the recent site changes here.

If you recall, a few days ago we overhauled our content-management system (CMS) which broke a few things in the app. So if you're experienced some app crashes or images not showing, they should now work well in v1.7. The good news is the CMS change has given our trusty developer Jay a greenlight for adding commenting to the app. Yes, we know you want that feature and we don't blame you, but we had to do the boring backend stuff first. Going forward, not only will we avoid those 502 site-errors we had but we can expand and add new functions. Case in point, hover your mouse over the Mobile Nations Super Bar near the top of your browser, then scroll over each OS. Cool, eh

Haven't tried our official app yet? For shame! Grab the trial/free version here in the Marketplace. If you buy it for $0.99, you get no ads and Live Tile support. With nearly 25,000 downloads and consistently one of the top news app in the Marketplace, you can't go wrong.

  • Toast notifications for news
  • Background downloading of the news feed when live tiles are enabled
