Microsoft may be close to announcing an expansion to its XBox Live streaming, paid television content.  Bloomberg reports that they are planning to provide Comcast and Verizon TV, and have also been in talks with close to two dozen other content providers to add sports, music, TV and movies to their current XBox Live services in the US and Europe.  Anonymous sources say that the announcement could come as soon as next week.

Under the plan, current subscribers to Comcast and Verizon television would be able to receive their content through Xbox.  Other media from companies like HBO, Bravo and Syfy would be available to XBox Live members through streaming.  In addition, MS is in talks with manufacturers like Samsung to get a Windows Live gaming hub added as apps on some of their televisions.  Add to that the impending Bing integration with Kinect controls and you have one serious home entertainment hub.

UPDATE: Microsoft made it official today in a press release detailing the television partnerships that they will have in place starting this holiday season.  The move includes deals with content providers around the world, including Bravo, Comcast, HBO GO, Verizon FiOS and Syfy in the U.S.; BBC in the U.K., Telefónica in Spain; Rogers On Demand in Canada; Televisa in Mexico; ZDF in Germany; and MediaSet in Italy.

You can get the details and a complete list of content in the full press release.

While we're still banging away on this gaming news filled day, lets take a brief look at the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update. Taking the Metro UI design cue, the new Xbox dashboard is reportedly coming this September or October and will feature YouTube, Bing and even supposedly Skype integration, making this quite a massive addition.

In a "video" shown on YouTube by iTzLuPo (since pulled by Microsoft), a series of images showing the new dashboard design and features were demonstrated. Evidently the Skype integration will work with Xbox LIVE friends and Xbox parties, which should be a lot of fun. In addition, a new "discoverable mode" was shown though its exact function is still a bit of a mystery. Certainly Bluetooth comes to mind (see the new headset) though WinRumors mentions Windows 8 support as a companion device and we can't help but wonder if Windows Phone won't be added to that feature set as well--makes sense, after all how else are you suppose to use your phone as a controller?

As noted above, the original video has been pulled due a copyright request by Microsoft, meaning it's authentic of course. Combined with the new Kinect features (you can control all of the Xbox now via voice and gesture), YouTube, Bing, Skype and the promise of Windows Phone gaming (see our Kinectimals post), we're pretty friggin' excited for this.

Though you can watch our video tour above of the new Games Hub in Windows Phone "Mango" (see review), you'll want to read all the changes cataloged by Microsoft themselves. From the Windows Phone Blog, you can tell, once again, that Microsoft is listening to consumers by incorporating a lot of changes. Indeed, the Games Hub feel more unified with the whole Xbox ecosystem and the changes are most welcomed.

Here's what's new:

  • Improved Collection View - basically smaller icons for games with a list view, makes it easier to navigate
  • New 3D Avatars with attitude - With XNA/Silverlight in a single app, your 3D Avatar is now "built in" with more functionality and movement
  • Improved Xbox LIVE messaging - Word suggest/complete is now built in, you can communicate with other Xbox  LIVE members on PC, phones or console. "If a message contains certain emoticons (e.g. Smile, Sad smile), you’ll notice your avatar’s expression change to reflect that emotion! (If a sender overloads a message with conflicting emoticons, your avatar will look bewildered."
  • Connect with Xbox LIVE friends
  • Integrated achievements and new comparison views
  • Edit your profile
  • Improved Spotlight content
  • Improved game request notifications: In Mango, you’ll receive notifications for multiplayer game or turn requests and can track them in the Requests section of the Games Hub.

Some of those last few ones are just carry overs from Xbox LIVE Extras, which is now purely for the Avatar Marketplace and to design your Avatar. Overall, a solid list of changes to look forward too.

WinRumors has reported on some interesting news that Microsoft may be planning to announce intentions to bring Silverlight to the Xbox 360 platform, and look set to display their plans at the MIX11 conference, which is in Las Vegas next week.

With both Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360 already sporting XNA, their connection would be improved heavily with the addition of Silverlight. Being Microsoft's alternative to Adobe's Flash (and a damn good one too), Silverlight could open up a new app Marketplace for the gaming console, a source (who wishes to remain anonymous) suggests. Windows Phone 7 developers could be greeted with a gateway to over 50 million users who could potentially become active customers and use their apps.

WinRumors has claimed that Microsoft plans to include a new application model (codenamed "Jupiter") that will allow developers to create and develop applications on Silverlight, deployed as AppX packages (.appx) which will be part of an introduced application store in Windows 8. This could well be Microsoft's answer to Apple's App Store, which is available on both OS X and iOS. Angry Birds on the 360 as well as more Xbox 360 and WP7 integrated games like Fable Coin Golf. Ah, the possibilities!

3D Brick breaker Revolution - Review

Like Tetris, Brick Breaker is one of those games that I consider one of the classic arcade games. I’ve played a number of variations of Brick Breaker over the years, so I was pretty excited when Brick Breaker Revolution 3D made it into the Marketplace.

If you are a Brick Breaker addict, see the full review of Brick Breaker Revolution 3D after the break.

Pros:
Classic Brick Breaker game-play with some twists, earn Xbox Live achievements, trial version available
Cons:
Doesn't feel like a classic game, the graphics look cheesy

One of the handful of new features heading to Windows Phone 7 is Xbox Live Kinect interface. The interface turns your Windows Phone into a companion for the Kinect gaming system. The above video demos the potential this integration has. No time frame on when such integration will be available was mentioned during Microsoft's Keynote Address at the 2011 Mobile World Congress.

The new feature will definitely expand the Windows Phone 7 role with Xbox Live and make Kinect gaming a lot more interesting.

We often get questions about the Xbox Live service on WP7 devices and how it correlates to the Xbox Live service on Xbox 360 consoles or on Windows PC's (where it's called Games for Windows - LIVE!).  Oh look! Here's one now from ericesque:

In general, I'm just fuzzy on how gaming on WP7 ties to the Xbox 360. Specifically, I'm wondering if I buy a game on my xbox, will I have to pay for a copy for WP7 too? Also, have we seen any games that let you play with friends on xbox if you're on WP7? I couldn't find any good learning resources from Microsoft. Hoping the experts could help.

Currently, gaming on WP7 is separated into two categories - games, and Xbox Live games. The Xbox Live service on WP7 is not so incredibly different from the Games for Windows - LIVE! service on Windows PC's. Downloading games and game demos from the marketplace is present and accounted for. A great deal of the social ins and outs is present too. With Xbox Live on WP7 you can easily see what your friends are up to - be it gaming or watching a movie or listening to music.

Friend requests and game invites are also present but will often lend itself to signing in on your Xbox 360 to accept a request. Game invitations, or rather, asynchronous multiplayer isn't currently set up for anything other than Uno and Chess in Game Chest: Logic Games. Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst works in tandem with Xbox 360's version of Crackdown 2 in that unlockables will become available in each version of the games with playthroughs from each other.

So far, the majority of the Xbox Live games on WP7 aren't companions to anything available on Xbox 360 and must be purchased separately. Ilomilo is the most recent game to come out for Xbox Live Arcade that is also on WP7 and is very much the same game as its WP7 counterpart, but each must be purchased separately.

No game, as of yet, can be played 100% synchronously with other people. The tie-in that you speak of doesn't exactly exist other than that it's just an extension of the service - of the same name, on a different device. A copy of a game on PC can be completely different from the Xbox 360 version and the version of that same game on WP7 will be worlds different in format, control, fun, and especially mobility.

See our Xbox/Windows Phone 7 Guide for more info.

No word on when Fable Coin Golf will be available to download, but the idea of collecting gold in your spare time that you can actually use in-game on Fable III is pretty fly. The game itself looks clever - with lots of upgrades and tricks to keep it from being a boring mini-golf game. All those features apparently add a whole lot of load time, because as you can see above, the game spent its sweet time loading up.

What little Windows Phone 7 news there is at CES centers around gaming. We stopped by their booth to check out a few of the new apps that are coming, including Full House Poker, above. It's a decent enough onilne poker client, it works pretty much the way you'd expect it to. Avatars are fully included, of course, but the main feature is the Xbox integration: money you earn on the mobile version of the game counts towards your total chip count to help qualify you for the regular tournaments on Xbox Live.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

We mentioned earlier about those Game Room titles coming to Windows Phone7 and here are a few others as well, all demoed very quickly on Channel 9. Some titles, like Pac Man (which is receiving some terrible reviews) and Pocket God are already out, others like Full House Poker and Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 are coming down the road.

Overall, the titles look decent but nothing mind-blowing.

As the Tweet above says, tomorrow is Xbox LIVE Wednesday (one of our favorite days) and tomorrow's releases both come from Microsoft Game Studios (MGS). One is 'Rise of Glory' and the other is 'Revolution'.

Unfortunately, we have no idea what these game are about nor have any screenshots but we'll keep an eye out.

Microsoft is giving away free Xbox games when you purchase a new Windows Phone 7 device.  Regardless if you purchase the phone through AT&T, T-Mobile, from Amazon.com or any other Windows Phone retailer you can claim your game.

Eligible models include the Samsung Focus, LG Quantum, HTC Surround, HTC HD7, and Dell Venue Pro.

The offer is valid on purchase made between December 17, 2010 and December 31, 2010. The game titles aren't too shabby and include:

  • Kinectimals
  • Kinect Joy Ride
  • Fable III
  • Halo Reach

To claim your game, you'll need to complete a redemption form that is available at www.myfreexbox360game.com and send it in along with a copy of your purchase reciept and a copy of the UPC code from your Windows Phone packaging.  You can find the full Terms and Conditions here.

It may not match Telus's offer to give you a free Xbox 360 gaming system, but it's still a very good offer on some very entertaining games.

Thanks goes out to Robert for the tip!

If you use Xbox LIVE Extras on Windows Phone 7, you may have noticed an update pushed to you today, specifically v1.50012.0 (up from v1.3). And if you're like us, you're wondering what changed? Don't worry, we got you covered:

New countries, new languages! We’re making Xbox LIVE Extras available in new languages including French, Italian, German, and Spanish. This also means that Xbox LIVE Extras will now be available in all the official countries where Windows Phone and Xbox LIVE are available!

Manage friend requests inside Xbox LIVE Extras! You’ll now be able to accept, or reject friend requests inside of Xbox LIVE Extras. Additionally you’ll be able to manage your friends’ lists as well as requests to others.

Even more additional features! We’ve also added a bunch of additional features such as new Avatar animations and configuration options, and displaying your motto on your profile. We’ve also worked to improve overall stability of the application!

We also can't help but notice it's finally faster to load, which is a welcomed change as well. We're going to bet that some of our Euro friends will be happy with the additional language support, allowing them to join in the party.

Go here on your phone or desktop to grab the app.

The Fast & Furious Adrenaline game for Xbox Live has been released today, bringing some more racing excitement to the mix. For $4.99 the game can be yours or you can do the try-before-you-buy thing, which we highly recommend.

We played with the game for a few minutes and while it's not bad, it's not great either. Handling is very sensitive and the graphics are OK. Need for Speed (see review and video) appears to be much more polished. But hey, if you like these games, it is certainly worth the demo download.

Watch the video for a sneak peak and grab the game here (launches Zune desktop).

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Microsoft is pushing hard to make their consumer products and services some of the must-haves for Christmas. As far as Windows Phone goes, we’ve seen product placements and advertising all over the place. The other big area that Microsoft is pushing right now is Xbox.

Microsoft’s recent launch of the Kinect accessory is driving a lot of new Xbox purchases, and with all of those consoles hitting the market, Microsoft is tossing out some incentives for all of those new owners to get their Xbox Live accounts up and running.

The Xbox Live Rewards program offers Microsoft Points in return for things like Xbox Live Gold account setup or renewal, purchases from the Xbox Live Marketplace, and completing monthly surveys. Now you don’t have to pay for the full Gold account to earn points, but there are several more ways to earn the points if you have a Gold account. Microsoft Points are redeemable for items from the Xbox Live Marketplace, and though this doesn’t translate over to the world of Windows Phone 7, we are hoping that Microsoft makes that transition sooner rather than later.

If you’re interested, head on over to the Xbox Live Rewards site and sign up. Rewards are available to those in the US or UK only.

Software Review: Need For Speed Undercover

Need For Speed is one of the most recognizable game titles ever. As the quintessential racing game, Need For Speed games offer a number of different racing styles and game types. I personally cut my teeth on Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Porsche Unleashed, and Underground; all of which offered very different game-play styles, car options, and race types. Additionally, as one of the most recognized names in the Xbox Live category in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace; Need For Speed Undercover is one of the games that Microsoft is using to showcase Windows Phone and Xbox Live as a mobile gaming platform (see Dan’s post on how Microsoft is chipping away at Apple’s exclusivity).

You’ve already seen the first look at Need For Speed, let’s get into the details of what makes this one of the more complete games in the Xbox Live arsenal.

Pros:
Intense graphics, high level of customizations, intuitive controls
Cons:
Slightly expensive

One of the big knocks on Windows Phone 7 has been the shortage of applications in the Marketplace when compared to Apple’s App Store. As we’ve reported several times, Microsoft is doing everything in their power to make developers successful on Windows Phone 7. Training, conferences, free developer tools, familiar programming languages, free e-books, documentation, financial guarantees, and contests have all been used to try and encourage developers to make their best apps available on the fledgling platform.

Microsoft is now going above and beyond to promote the applications that developers have already brought to the Marketplace in anticipation of the Holiday season. We’ve already discussed Bing Visual Search for Windows Phone 7 Apps, which makes it quick and easy to find software for your phone from any computer. An additional push is being made with advertising in the Xbox dashboard on Xbox 360 console, utilizing an established customer base to expand the popularity of the platform. Microsoft is also featuring specific apps within the Marketplace and on Windowsphone.com.

One thing is for sure, Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to establish Windows Phone 7 as one of the premier smart-phone platforms on the market.

Ilomilo Review

I like puzzle games and I like things that are expressly cute without overdoing it. I like quirky fun music and the graphic styles of old story books. Forgive me if I'm not just a little bit biased toward Ilomilo. Southend Interactive and Microsoft Game Studios have crafted a heartwarming and fun platform puzzler which was (at launch) an exclusive with AT&T.

Software Review (Windows Phone 7): The Harvest

One of the premier features of Windows Phone 7 is the integration of Xbox Live. Without a doubt, the quality of games offered by such a popular platform as well as the social aspects that Xbox live offers are light-years ahead of where we were with Windows Mobile 6.5. One of the first Xbox live games that we saw demonstrated (remember MIX?) was The Harvest from Microsoft Game Studios.

Pros:
Incredible Graphics, Intuitive game-play
Cons:
Takes a while to load the game

Although we're not even sure how one would begin modifying files on Windows Phone 7 to circumvent Xbox Live Leaderboards, Achievements or use pirated software, it looks like Microsoft is already thinking about it. Just in case.

In a new build of WP7 (not yet released), Conflipper (who is still very much in retirement, so don't get your hopes up) has found an interesting file that says:

This phone has been banned from Xbox LIVE for violating the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use. To protect the Xbox LIVE service and its members, Microsoft does not provide details about phone bans. There is no recourse for Terms of Use violations.

This is similar to what happened on the Xbox 360 in 2009 when nearly 1 million users were permanently banned for evidently modifying their Xbox hardware or using pirated software. Presumably, Microsoft is taking preventive action for when XDA and others start digging into the OS, looking to modify their new mobile OS. In that sense, this is no surprise. On the other hand, it is interesting to know that MS has a system nearly in place to react to such a scenario. So take warning gamers, as once you are banned, it's for evah.

Other notable finds were references in Internet Explorer for copy and paste:

|Cut|Copy|Paste|Encoding|Print Preview||

"Cuts the selection and puts it on the Clipboard."

"Inserts the Clipboard contents at the insertion point."

Of course we know copy and paste are coming soon, so this is just more evidence that the feature is already in the works. Sweet.

Thanks, Conflipper, for the info!
