Although we're not even sure how one would begin modifying files on Windows Phone 7 to circumvent Xbox Live Leaderboards, Achievements or use pirated software, it looks like Microsoft is already thinking about it. Just in case.

In a new build of WP7 (not yet released), Conflipper (who is still very much in retirement, so don't get your hopes up) has found an interesting file that says:

This phone has been banned from Xbox LIVE for violating the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use. To protect the Xbox LIVE service and its members, Microsoft does not provide details about phone bans. There is no recourse for Terms of Use violations.

This is similar to what happened on the Xbox 360 in 2009 when nearly 1 million users were permanently banned for evidently modifying their Xbox hardware or using pirated software. Presumably, Microsoft is taking preventive action for when XDA and others start digging into the OS, looking to modify their new mobile OS. In that sense, this is no surprise. On the other hand, it is interesting to know that MS has a system nearly in place to react to such a scenario. So take warning gamers, as once you are banned, it's for evah.

Other notable finds were references in Internet Explorer for copy and paste:

|Cut|Copy|Paste|Encoding|Print Preview||

"Cuts the selection and puts it on the Clipboard."

"Inserts the Clipboard contents at the insertion point."

Of course we know copy and paste are coming soon, so this is just more evidence that the feature is already in the works. Sweet.

Thanks, Conflipper, for the info!

Mentioned briefly in the introductory video for the latest Dashboard Update (which hit Xbox 360 consoles this past Monday and was officially announced right before the US Launch of Kinect in NYC on Wednesday) the Xbox Live Gold Family Pack is really finally truly here. Not so surprisingly, some confusion and many questions were raised among the users that don't know what to do with multiple Xbox Live Gold accounts and multiple consoles.

How it will affect their Zune accounts and alter their interactions with each of the services was also a dodgy subject. I recommend reading on if you find any aspect of the new plan confusing, confounding, befuddling, frustrating, or any other disorienting verb. We'll do our best to leave you enlightened and ready to set up an Xbox Live Gold Family Pack.

You may find it's worth it even if you don't have a full family!

Looks like all of those Microsoft execs also have a digital doppelganger as evidenced by the above shot taken from the Microsoft site. We imagine this is anticipation of the Kinect launch coming up next week. Speaking of, we're still deciding if we should replace our old xbox and get the whole new Xbox 360s + Kinect kit or just buy Kinect. Decisions!

Anyways, take a look at all the listings with the link below. And take a look at our Xbox + WP7 primer over here, well worth the read if you're a n00b.

WP7 Guide: Xbox, Windows Phone 7 and you

We’re all going to be adjusting and warming up to the new Windows Phone 7 OS but the Xbox 360 has been around for five years now. If you don’t know anything about Xbox or Xbox Live than it’s about time that we get you up to speed.

The phrase "game console" is typically the first thing that comes to mind but what about social device? Or media hub? How about online entertainment service. . . thing? The Xbox 360 is always sold short when it’s called a game console. November of 2005 was when the last great home console war saw the arrival of the Xbox 360 and it’s Xbox Live service and this November we’re going to also see an extension of some of the integral features of the Xbox Live service through Windows Phone 7. Let’s take a look at the console and see what those features are..

Take a coffee break and read Rob's in-depth tutorial on all things Xbox!

Microsoft is starting to roll out a Xbox Live Extras update for Windows Phone 7. Extras will allow you to view, access and launch your game library from one easy-to-navigate hub on your phone. Xbox Live Extras is only available in the United States, United Kingdom, India, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong. More Countries will be added to the list as things progress.

There were a few bugs reported when it was first released a few days ago, such as the Xbox hub hanging on a black screen and then returning to the Start screen. It was also taking some time to convert Avatar Props for the Windows Phone. Those bugs were quickly addressed by Microsoft and the update should be hitting the Marketplace now.

If you start to tinker with Xbox Live Extras on your Windows Phone and still encounter any issues, you can report them here.

A few days ago we had covered how to create and combine an Xbox Live account and Zune account by using one powerful all-encompassing Windows Live ID - the ringleader that ties all of these services together. We've noted that if you don't currently use any of these services, or use just one of them, that you should create a Windows Live ID first. Yes, the term Windows Live ID is synonymous with Hotmail account so if you've got a Hotmail account, you've in tern, got a Windows Live ID. Many people are already using either an Xbox live account or Zune account without them being linked to a Windows Live ID. This is easily remedied if you have only one Windows Live ID you'd like to use for each service but gets pretty complicated if you want to combine multiple open accounts.

I got on the phone with Microsoft's Technical Support staff and went through their chain of command to get some definitive answers and to see what these users should do when they get a Windows Phone 7 device.

Read on after the break for our discussion with Microsoft and multiple accounts!

All things much change and according to Major Nelson, the Xbox.com website gets a big overhaul tomorrow (here are a few screen shots) .

While there are many changes, the biggest one is the ability to play web games over LIVE will be available. And if you or associate happens to have a Windows Phone 7 device, you can play them over the web. Boy does that sound like a time-killer at work.

Other notable changes are:

  • Browser based Avatar editor: Edit your avatar and preview avatar items before purchase
  • Combined views for messages, friend and game requests
  • Improved notification of your account subscription
  • Leverage Family Reports to understand what your family is doing and how they are using LIVE
  • Marketplace: More powerful search and more intuitive ways to browse and filter

Guide: Linking Windows Live with Xbox Live

Windows Phone 7 has made an appearance on the Xbox Live website as a showcase of things to come this holiday season. Microsoft certainly has all of their ducks in a row but what about you? Have you already prepared yourself for when you’ve actually have one of the new devices in your hands? If you’ve already have a Windows Live ID or are already a member of the Xbox Live community than you’re next to set. How about both though? Or what if you’ve just got one of the two? Or two separate accounts? The whole process of creating or linking accounts can put you in the dark as to what, exactly, you should be doing. Fret not, we’re here to help!

Read on after the break on how to manage and link up your LIVE acccounts in preperation for Windows Phone 7!

While none of us hip kids get to play with them just yet, Microsoft has gone ahead and flipped the switch on for those Xbox games for Windows Phone 7. Well, for two of them at least: 'Flowerz' and 'Hexic Rush'

It's basically a milestone for the company since this is the first time, as Michael Klucher tweets above, that achievements are being counted towards your Xbox gamer-tag.

Klucher also notes on his blog that this is still a test-phase:

I did want to let everyone know who might have access to these games through pre-release hardware that they should be considered test games and not early launch titles. You can and should expect that everything about the game is subject to change or be disabled at any time.

Finally, Paul Thurrott has also has a write up on this happening with some screenshots of the games in the Zune software and his achievements. Cool stuff and it means we're inching closer and closer to that big day.

In preparation for Windows Phone 7, Microsoft is rolling out a beta-preview update for some Xbox users that features some new things including access to the Zune Marketplace, a re-designed UI and streaming video content (reported here earlier). The full preview contains: "ESPN on Xbox LIVE, Zune music, Netflix search, the new Xbox LIVE dashboard, and new updates to Zune video and Family Settings "

The new UI is very minimalist, having removed the next and previous "rows" from view and instead makes them just text when not highlighted. The effect is much cleaner looking now and truth be told, it's also much faster.

The Zune Marketplace allows you to buy or rent TV/movies in Standard or High Definition for various prices points ~200-300 points to rent ($3-4 roughly); ~800 points to buy (~$10).  Rentals are for 24 hours, whereas buying it allows you to stream or download (and later can sync to our devices with Windows Phone 7). The movie, TV and video selection id decent with content mostly geared to males aged 15-35).

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to stream music or podcasts directly from your Zune account and it's not clear if that is something they are planning. But overall the update is looking quite nice and we're pleased..

We'll have more coverage and an HD video up, probably in the AM tomorrow (as soon as our video camera shows up). Ask any questions in comments and we'll try to answer. For now, you can check out some more snapshots of the new UI and Zune Marketplace after the break!

Update: Received some clarification via email "...with Zune Pass, our monthly music subscription service, you stream or download as many songs as you like from the Zune Marketplace and listen to them for as long as you hold your subscription – on your PC, Windows Phone, Xbox, or in any browser via zune.net".  Sweet!

On Windows Phone 7 there are two types of games: Xbox LIVE supported and non-LIVE supported. The former requires more time, money and skills for getting approval and is typical reserved for the "bigger" game studios who can get access to Microsoft's LIVE network (higher standard); the latter anyone can write games for and sell/distribute through the Marketplace.

Therefore, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Xbox LIVE games, the ones that will be of high quality and leverage the full feature-set of WP7, will get listing priority on your device.

This is according Michel Klucher (Lead Program Manger XNA Development Platform at Microsoft), who on his blog gave some details on this issue noting:

Games that do not use Xbox LIVE will be listed right below the Xbox LIVE enabled titles in your collection. All games can be pinned to the start menu just like any other content in Windows Phone 7.

While not a big deal, it seems this would push developers to go for the LIVE option if possible though it may make a few developers feel a little lower on the totem poll if they don't have the deep pockets, like the studios.

There are three types of people who visit this site:

  1. Those with Xbox, LIVE & want Windows Phone 7
  2. Those who are planning to get an Xbox + LIVE for Windows Phone 7
  3. Those who never plan on getting an Xbox because you "don't game"

This post is for #1 and #2--we're cool. As for you number three'ers, you're dead to me, feel free to scroll down and read another blog entry.

Anyways, it costs something like $49.99 for the Gold membership, which allows access to all the cool online stuff, gaming, online multiplayer, Netflix, Last.FM, etc. (For those who don't have one, the Xbox is just as much a media center as a gaming machine--my usage for instance is probably 70% media e.g. Netflix/TV torrents, 30% actual gaming, usually Star Wars related.)

While not a bad deal, it's going up on November 1st to $59.99, which seems to be a curious time right when a certain mobile OS launches and Microsoft will see an influx of new customers. Oh and that Kinect thing is launching too.

The good news is that you can renew now for $39.99 to tap in that extra year and save 30%, which we suppose is a good deal (unless you membership just auto-renewed like 2 weeks ago, grrr).

Read up on the details and renew here.

We've mentioned in the past about 'Orion', the geolocation service/API for Windows Phone 7 which allows developers access to many forms of locating the phone's location extremely quickly.

Now that same service looks to be leveraged, eventually, for gaming.

Makes sense to us. Such a feature could be used to unlock levels or weapons by requiring the user to be at a certain location or establishment. Going further, the level-up could be time-constrained, requiring the player to be at a certain place, at a certain time.

Of course with our corporate overlords, we could also imagine commercially sponsored games by chain-stores, such as coffee shops or your local Best Buy. We're not too sure about the 'coolness' of the latter as we can't think of any hip corporate-branded games, but the potential at least exists.

Finally, the potential to leverage such geolocation gaming could result in 'flash mobs', at least according to  Microsoft's independent software vendor developer evangelist Paul Foster and OS and mobile product manager lead William Coleman, who in an interview detailed WP7s GPS potential. It should be noted that all of this is up to the developers to take advantage of and so far, only Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst uses such technology.

For those of you who live near Seattle or are planning on attending PAX 2010, you'll be glad to know Microsoft's Xbox LIVE and Windows Phone 7 will be present, at least according to Mike Klucher (Lead Program Manger - XNA Development Platform at Microsoft).

The popular gaming convention runs September 3rd-5th at the Washington State Convention Center and should be a lot of fun. Registration is $35 per day or $55 for all 3-days, but alas, only Sunday is left open for a badge. At this time, there doesn't appear to be a specific panel discussion of WP7 and XBLA, but we'll keep an eye out.

Regardless, we an expect some more hands-on and gaming footage in less than two-weeks time, which sounds good to us.

For those who wanted a recap on that Microsoft Backstage event that happened yesterday, it may be awhile.

The video chat event, hosted by Xbox guru Major Nelson and focusing on the new Xbox LIVE + Windows Phone 7 gaming, evidently crashed due to too much interest. Hey, too much is better than too little!

As of right now, the video is not up, but we expect it sometime "this week" which is quickly coming to an end. It also seems from Nelson's other tweet that they may do the whole event again, so everyone can join in?

We'll keep you posted.

For those who want even more information on Microsoft's plans for Windows Phone 7 and Xbox integration, clear your calendar for this Thursday August 19, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. PST (4:00 p.m. CST).

Microsoft will be hosting yet-another "Backstage" video chat even, this time with none other than Major Nelson (Xbox folks know him pretty well). There you can

...get answers on Xbox LIVE titles available at launch, see more Games hub features, and get the total recap of our announcements at Gamescom.

Sounds cool.  It may just be a rehash of what we've seen so far, but maybe we'll catch a glimpse of something new. To access, you'll need to sign up, which is easy enough with a Live mail account or not. You can do that here and get the event details.

We'll of course try to do a recap for you, 'cause that's how we roll.

As we mentioned just a few days ago, we were expecting Microsoft to have a few announcements at Gamescom conference in Germany this week and sure enough, they delivered. And in our opinion, big time.

In an exciting move, Microsoft has announced a whole hodge podge of game titles that will be released during the launch phase of Windows Phone 7 and there are some biggies.  The are so many in fact, you'll have click the link to see the whole list, but we'll tease you with a few:

  • Halo: Waypoint
  • Bejeweled LIVE
  • Castlevania
  • Guitar Hero 5
  • Max and the Magic Marker
  • Star Wars: Battle for Hoth
  • Assassins Creed
  • Asphalt 5

In all, there will be 50 titles launching this year (all listed after the break), from studios such as Gameloft, Konami, Namco Bandai, PopCap, THQ and of course, the newly formed Mobile Gaming Studios from Microsoft.

Sound exciting? Read on for some screen shots, videos, the official commercial, a poll and much more details!

We're headed into the finial lap for the Windows Phone 7 launch and we think Microsoft still has a few tricks up their sleeves to announce before release.

Next week, Microsoft is confirmed to be at Gamescom, the European version of E3 boasting to be the world's largest gaming conference with "...245,000 visitors, more than 4,000 journalists and 458 exhibitors from 31 countries". Yowza.

While just being there is expected, Microsoft is reportedly confirmed, in addition, to have " a full conference...and that they had several announcements to make".

No doubt Microsoft will have something to say about Kinect (aka Project Natal), but we're going to be paying close attention for any Windows Phone 7 gaming announcements--after all, Europe appears to be slightly ahead of the U.S. market for release, so what better time to show off some big Xbox/WP7 titles?

We're still hoping/betting on a 'Halo' port of some sort for Redmond's latest mobile OS. But what do you folks think?

For those of you who remember when Windows Phone 7 debuted, you may recall that the Xbox gaming hub was not 'live' at the time--the personal avatar didn't do the little jig  as it was just a place-holder, as well as not updating all the gaming achievements that you may have won.

As we approach RTM, we knew of course that would change and we're getting word now that, indeed the Xbox hub is now live and ready to go. From Michael Klucher, a WP7 developer:

My Windows Phone 7 device has really become my phone. I keep it updated with the latest builds and use it as I would any phone I’ve ever owned. I play games(from App Week), check my email, listen to music, and surf the web. This week started out like most others, I flashed my phone, entered my Windows Live ID, and went into the Games Hub…

Whoa! That’s me! By me of course I mean my Gamertag, Avatar, and latest Achievement in the Games Hub! I couldn’t believe it, we’ve had the Games Hub working for a while, but up until now it’s been on internal networks inside Microsoft. This week was the first time I really got to see my “true” gamer identity on the phone.

... It’s an incredible experience to see something that many of us have been working on really come together and shine

We can't be the only ones who are excited about this Xbox integration and we're pretty psyched to see this all in person at some point. Combined with the re-launch of XBox & Zune in the fall, Microsoft has a great opportunity for synergy here, lets hope they deliver.

Looks like the folks at MobileTechWorld got to play with the Samsung Omnia HD modified for Windows Phone 7.

They note that the processor has been updated from the lackluster TI OMAP 3430 to a Snapdragon (presumably 1GHz) and that this device probably won't make it to production, for obvious reasons.

Their impressions? Very positive noting

As you can see in the video below everything is running smoothly with no sign of lag or stuttering and everything was functional on the handset (GPS, data, and even camera). It’s the smoothies mobile experience I have ever witness (on par with the iPhone) and it definitely feels a lot better when used on a real handset compared to the desktop emulator.

That seems to be the consensus lately on anyone who gets to play with one of these prototypes, which is a great sign considering finalized hardware and software is still months away.

Also, the video game 'Twin Blades' by Press Star Studio was shown off. The game is currently available on Xbox Live Arcade (400 points) and was ported in under 2 weeks by one programmer. It's already fully integrated with Xbox including achievements and this will be available when WP7 launches. Sweet--going to download to XBox right now.

Both videos after the jump.
