Tethering still missing from Mango [Updated]

While it seems all our feature check lists were complete throughout the Mango VIP preview yesterday, there was one small function they seemed to miss - tethering. This is without doubt one of the most requested features by consumers and it seems the Windows Phone team are aware of those user who require it.

Achim Berg, corporate Vice President of Windows Phone marketing, told Pocket-lint at the VIP event in London that he regrets not being able to get tethering included into the update by the development team and mentions it was clear on the day (at the event yesterday) that many of those in the audience wanted that feature to be mentioned.

Update: Microsoft's Matt Bencke responded and gave more detail on the status of tethering on the Windows PHone blog (Thanks, @techSage)

"I appreciate your pain around tethering (using your device as a modem) as this has been something that I've used in the past. Tethering, in the past was something that we managed independently of the Mobile Operators (e.g. AT&T, Orange, Verizon). In recent years, the Mobile Operators have now taken ownership of this functionality x-all platforms (e.g. our competitors as well as us). We are continually working with them and our OEM partners to enable this functionality for our devices, but at this time there isn't an announcement that we've made in regards to rolling out this feature. Stay Tuned!"

Not "officially", we've already covered how to enable tethering on your Samsung Focus and Omnia 7.

Reflexx says:

I'm still wondering about the ability to send videos to your friends.Features phones do this. So I was hoping that it would be something included in Mango to at least get it on par with feature phones when it comes to sharing media.

Light Speed1 says:

feature phones dont do that... most pictures cant even be downloaded on a featurephone

CX1 says:

No mention of VPN support either.Have to stick with my dual boot WP7 android HD2 until there is.

Dark_Halmut says:

I fully expect there to be third party tethering apps to come out.

futurix says:

Impossible for non-jailbroken phones.

graig99 says:

This is literally a make or break feature for me, and I was hoping to limp along on my HD7 until Mango without it....but now I'm seriously considering selling up and moving to android....or else keep praying that android ROM gets cooked fairly soon...

GP07 says:

It doesn't matter if in the end the carriers start to block that option on their networks. Hasn't AT&T done this actually? It seems that the carriers don't want you tethering on their networks, otherwise from MS's point of view they don't care if you do or don't.

Man, do we really need to see Apple garbage in all of this guy's articles...??

Rich Edmonds says:

Sorry, how many articles have I included my MacBook? Maybe two or three? Possibly even four? Please don't shoot me, you wont have to as your immaturity has already made an effect. That effect is the acknowledgement that you have no idea what you're talking about. So I can use a different brand of laptop and it'd be fine? I'll use what I want thank you very much.Unlike you, I'm no fanboy, I use Apple products, Microsoft products, open source software (including Linux), etc. so to say that I'm posting Apple "garbage" in all of my articles (personally I don't see my MacBook as garbage, does the job for me, has the best keyboard for typing and provides 10 hours of battery life) just goes to show how intelligent you are.Oh and by the way, sort your grammar out. Was a pain to read the comment with three bullet points followed by multiple question marks. What do they teach at schools these days eh? ;-)

I also never saw mention of anything regarding Flash or Silverlight support. Unless I missed something in the press release.

nashtheflash says:

Flash won't be supported to my knowledge, but in the MIX demo they clearly state that Silverlight will be on board with the IE9 update.

theefman says:

Another reason not to go with carrier branded phone, go unlocked and enjoy all the Mango-ey goodness!

hvakrg says:

Personally I find that response to be very US-centric. Here in Norway I have yet to run into any tethering problems, but that said I would much rather have a MiFi device in my pocket that supplied internett access for both my laptop and my phone. Tethering on the phone simply uses way too much power.

jh20001 says:

Ya, one of the most important features it lacks...in the same pool as custom ringtones..so knowing it's still going to lack it o_O....come on MS, don't make me switch to another OS....

Mystictrust says:

Just kind of an FYI to you I guess, but custom ringtones are most definitely in Mango. It was mentioned at MIX, just wasn't in this release. Reference to it is also in the Manage WP Developer tools.

Mystictrust says:

Sorry, didn't mean "wasn't in this release". I meant "wasn't in this presentation"

mavricxx says:

I wish they also added UMA.
