Tomorrow morning you can ask the experts behind your Lumia's camera anything you want

If there's one thing we can all agree on is that Nokia's cameras tend to be the best in the business. From the groundbreaking Nokia Lumia 920 to the 41 MP Lumia 1020 to the recent 20 MP gems on the Lumia 930 and 1520, PureView cameras have set the bar quite high for modern smartphones.

Tomorrow, the engineering 'superstars' Juha Alakarhu and Eero Salmelin will be doing a live Ask Me Anything (AMA) on the Conversations blog, providing a unique opportunity to quiz the gurus on anything relating to mobile imaging.

I know I'll be on hand to ask a few myself, so join in and maybe your question will get to be asked! You can find the AMA on Conversations starting at 6 AM PDT / 9 AM ET / 1 PM GMT / 2 PM London / 4 PM Helsinki time!

pookyjoralyn says:

That must be an old photo.

Deaconclgi says:

Yes, it is an old photo. Great camera devices. I have both of those devices, the Nokia 808 PureView on the left and the Lumia 920 on the right. My 1020 is currently my main photography. I don't use the 1520 for photos at all. When I need an accurately colored xenon flash lit photo, I use the 808 PureView.

I hope the 1020 successor has a xenon flash atleast on par with the dual capicitor xenon of the 808 and accurate white balance as well. I don't mind less megapixels as long as the camera contains a super large sensor and a powerful xenon flash that meets or exceeds the one on the Nokia 808 PureView.

pookyjoralyn says:

I'm using the 920 at the moment. The OIS is freaking awesome.

rodneyej says:

In some ways my 920 is better than my 1520.. No joke!.. The 920 takes better low light images, and the 1520 takes absolutely amazing day light photos... If I could carry both I would..

link5a says:

Very interesting. I only have the 920.

lubbalots says:

There must be something wrong my eyes. I swear my 1520 takes better photos than my wife's 1020.

vlad0 says:

That's a white 808 with a black back cover.. classy. I also like the white/red combo

But first let them take a selfie...

That's great news.

DHHSMichael says:

I hope they respond to the yellow post processing that ruins photos.

ven07 says:

Lol I hope we get answer to this

RaRa85 says:

Yes. All the would have to do is nothing. Give us the same saving image and not the one post save. Voila!

ETjon says:

Seriously. My Lumia 925 pictures are a joke now. It's embarrassing to show someone my photos with the supposed amazing camera. It used to be great... Now they're awful.

dikadik says:

Somebody really need o ask about this! I beg you guys please

pluizebol says:

Pictures with the 920 were superb as long as the phone was running the Portico firmware.

With the Amber firmware the pictures became completely degraded:
- sharpness was replaced by smoothness : a disaster
- all pictures get a yellowish tint : another disaster

My 2 Lumia 925 phones came with Amber out of the box and I have never been happy with the camera quality because of the 2 reasons mentioned above.

The Black firmware did not solve these camera degradation.

fancy0479 says:

This!

Originally, 920 has so good a camera. Yet after Amber/GDR2, oh boy I thought it would be even better, the pictures in most of the cases will get a greenish tint after saving.

Touting as the best in mobile photography, it's irony that even after Black/GDR3, Nokia still failed to fix this disasterous bug!

Deaconclgi says:

Daniel,

If you could only ask one question, what question would you ask?

Hmm, hard to say. I've spoken with Juha quite a bit over the last couple of years, so I've generally have had my questions answered already. Will have to think of one tonight.

Deaconclgi says:

Ok. Thank you for the swift reply.

chrispyogurt says:

Maybe the next step will be something like project Ara. But, only for the camera module which may consist of lens, sensor, image processor, etc.

Th3 I3LooD says:

Please just try and get him to confirm a 1030 or a 1020 successor is in the pipeline and that it will use at least 41mp technology, also, are they able or planning to go even larger then 41mp???

DANIEL RUBINO plz plz plz help me out ,plz reply to this

jaywinjv says:

lol.
Are you crying?

Nokia should enter the camera market. Great quality and they have brand awareness. Or atleast think about it

spinzeroWL says:

The dedicated camera market is dying....
They are in the right market - just need to refine some of the loose edges (no continuous autofocus on the camera flagship?! Post processing colour tinting etc etc)

mr toes says:

I would love to know why it takes so long for windows phones to take a picture, in android and IOS, theres just a snap when you press the button but windows phones must take ages to focus forst

ALex Susky says:

I know exactly what you mean! It's the worst. Also i always seem to get low light photos even in a normally lighted room

WinOMG says:

It only takes long if you tap. This is because it focuses and gets the best image. You can press the camera button to take the picutre instantly. Be grateful for this feature, because quick, instant photos do not always yield the clearest images!

ETjon says:

That is not true. My Lumia 925 camera has to focus every time whether you tap, or press the button quickly. The only instant pictures it seems to take are front cam pics.

rodneyej says:

No, it focuses like that too.. WP cameras are just slow.

sdreamer says:

This works if you fix focus your photos. Meaning you just half release the button instead of full release causing it to not focus and just shoot right away. Of course you have to deal with the transition which I think slows things down. You need to be using the default app to achieve the fastest shot to shot time on WP. I'm guessing with WP it writes images right away to the NAND instead of just caching it all to RAM, which is probably how others achieve faster shot to shot time.

rodneyej says:

Exactly!! WP devices are extremely slow.. And, there's no excuse..

poddie says:

I was just going to comment and see if someone could ask about this. It's incredibly noticeable... my boss got an icon and mentioned it right away. Love the image quality, but it's damn near impossible to take a quick photo.

jaywinjv says:

Yes. It's impossible to take quick photos. It's slightly better when using the Microsoft camera app, but still very slow.
Also auto white balance and exposure is not as good as iPhone 5.
Otherwise Nokia cameras are the best in the market.

TechFreak1 says:

I've taken so many on the fly pictures with my trusty 920 and if I need to take burst images I use smart cam or rather "smart sequence" via the pro camera app (set as default) which is what it is called now. I'd share them but as they are pictures of my little nieces and nephews, I'm not going to post them up.

DaveGx says:

Takes too long to take a pic. Where is a GOOD panorama function? The iPhone one is excellent

Lucas Lima2 says:

Me too...... New Panorama function ... and Shutter Speed +4seg ..... ( at least 10 seg)

rodneyej says:

Yeah, more features.. Panorama, SloMo, HDR❕❕❕ Where are they❔

fancy0479 says:

This!

Nokia  panorama app is broken.

Xeeling says:

The burst shot speed is too slow

Be sure to ask them why my 720 's camera which used to be awesome before amber got so shitty and just became a mess. After being such an extraordinary camera from the start and taking pics like 12 mps do it suddenly lacked the quality. Yellow hues, night shots blurry and days shots with shit resolution. Why cany I have my camera back :/

aaa6112 says:

I agree! I hate the 720 photo quality post-Amber.

AAA6112
i askd nokia service centre they hav no answer for this, wht u thnk we shuld ,or daniel u tell us whts d solution for this,i want my camera quality back,i cant afford lumia 1020 or pureview phones,

milfermon says:

Is this for pureview devices only or Lumias in general?

cesar ruiz1 says:

Where are my updates for my 1520.....

Why on earth the 4s shutter speed was removed from the Nokia Lumia 520??

I'm not an expert, but I think that's because 520's sensor'll get destroyed after 4 sec exposure

pookyjoralyn says:

Nope, I used to have one and Nokia Camera (non-beta) did allow 4s shutter speed.

RiseUpGames says:

They did it with the GDR3 update. I think it was to differentiate the feature set between Pureview and non-Pureview cameras. Really is a shame... I saw a ton of great long-exposure photos taken with the 520 before it got removed.

pookyjoralyn says:

Really? I was on dev preview and 4s shutter speed was there (I already sold it)

RiseUpGames says:

Hmm... it's there with my GDR2 520, but some users (of ProShot) with GDR3 have reported they can only go as slow as 1 second now. I wonder if it has something to do with the dev preview build.

Either way it's too bad that not everyone has it, cause the hardware is certainly capable.

gonza1520 says:

Can you have an option to export only high resolution pictures to PC ? It takes too long having to separate low res from high.

Extraneus says:

I'll second that; good functionality!

startrunner says:

Sort by file size.
Edit: Sort by 'Dimensions'

dreonedon says:

Ask him why both 1520 and 930/icon has horrible night time video recording its red and pixelated! Only down side of both phones!

rydorrin says:

Why do people never mention the Icon

A 1020 successor? :)

psychotron says:

^ This. Definitely this.

rodneyej says:

That's gonna be the main topic of discussion.. Guaranteed!

poddie says:

Oooh... GREAT question! I want one desperately!

gcdc_lumia says:

ooooh! that would be great. nokia mclaren! woot!

noelito says:

Lumia Front facing cameras are terrible! When you snap the picture you instantly see the color and sharpness degrade, the front facing camera is almost a joke I truly have to rely on the rear camera for selfies

EspHack says:

well I almost forgot that, there isn't a nokia device with better than 720p ffc, while the competency have already  had 1080p for almost 3-2 generations, I dont really care if it is 1080p or 720p, what I would like to see here is an "ultrapixel" camera I bet it could be a lot better for video calls than what we have now, the HTC one M7 is the best phone for low light video in my opinion

pookyjoralyn says:

There'll be the "Superman" phone for that.

rodneyej says:

I want a 8mp FFC❕ Pureview❗❗

sdreamer says:

This, but its more of white balance problems for me. It's always wrong.

Extraneus says:

Why are you snapping selfies? Now THAT'S the real problem...! ;-)

EspHack says:

I'd like to know why are they still producing "pureview" cameras WITHOUT xenon flashes, see the 1520/929/930 as the newest examples, I was very excited about the 928 successor until I saw that led flash... honestly I think nokia/microsoft needs to differentiate their phones in every aspect possible

mesamit says:

why 625 can record in 1080P while 520/525/620 can't although they have same camera....even 720 with 6.1 MP can't record in 1080P while 625 with 5 MP can record in 1080P....

lippidp says:

6am is too early to think about engineering.

rodneyej says:

That's US time❕❕

920 camera was groundbreaking, but post processing is way too harsh :(
I make great photos using my beloved 920, but sometimes photos post process is doing very harmful things

Antluv82 says:

Errbody kno that Nokia got tha best cam.....i got tha 1520

MadSci2 says:

I may not be able to join in live. If anyone would like to, I would love to compliment them, and let them know I'm using my L1020 for Astrophotography. It does astoundingly well, however I am stymied by just one thing, the maximum 4 second exposure times. Please ask them to add the ability to do longer exposures, up to 60 minutes w pulls be nice, and a "bulb" mode, perhaps triggered by a USB cable switch or even a coded text message, would be a phenomenal expansion of this amazing camera!
I'd be very grateful to anyone who asked for me!

JohnStrk says:

I just want to know the specs of McLaren's camera. Using Pelican Imaging? Pureview 3? Faster processing? Better than the 1020? Etc. Give us some hints!!!

peachy001 says:

Yep... Me too.

I would ask, why the completely forgot HDR.  The bracketing is too complicated and not that equivalent.

And if they are thinking about more that 30fps, to allow video in slow motion let's say 120fps or something better than the competence.

juskocf says:

I will ask about the lumia 1020  :

1. Why the OIS/AF is "pulsating" (or oscillating)  all the time when taking video ?

2. Why the focus point is not in infinity why I manually set it to infinity ?

noelito says:

We really gotta bring up the front facing cam issue, they are really bad, its almost a joke my ativ s took better ff shots

amiraseri says:

I hope they use the greatest CPU, perhaps even dedicated one for camera like the 808. And hope they have external SD card, or bigger memory 128Gb, fm transmitter, all the good stuff.

Extraneus says:

I'll second that!

Kumar Gaurav says:

the most important question: Is there a successor to 1020 in works?

Extraneus says:

Crazy intro, using the term "groundbreaking Nokia cameras" and NOT mentioning the 808 in the same sentence... He's sitting with one in his hand, for crying out loud!

peachy001 says:

I think McLaren is the 1020 replacement.

Chris Wayne2 says:

Please Daniel, ask if the 1020's successor is coming anytime soon T_T also, if I don't make it to the Q&A could somebody please ask if they're working to make the Nokia Cam faster?

dkxs says:

I have 3 questions for them! Slow photo taking speed, lousy white balance and worsened image quality since amber

djchrisluna says:

What's gonna happen to the Lumia cameras branding with Carl Zeiss lenses? Wont Nokia keep the camera technology and isn't Carl Zeiss exclusive to Nokia?

mnwr says:

Yeah the camera sluggishness bugs me a lot and my friends with their overrated iPhones and Samsungs always mocks my 920. BTW i wud love to know if there is a successor to the 1520 in the works.

em1ke says:

Where is HDR god dammit!?

peachy001 says:

So, just a few things. McLaren is first up, dish the dirt. Xenon flash, slow motion recording, 60fps recording, pos processing issues, speed of camera, yellow/green tint, speed (I just can't take a shot unless everyone is still and set rigid).

shreadow says:

when will we have CYAN UPDATE, shutter speed is slow, focus time is too much and too much post processing! i have a lumia 1520 with snapdragon 800 and its slow taking pictures, the problem is in nokia software and post processing

and what about HDR!

My N82 still takes better shots than my L925! Terribly disappointed by L925 camera performance.

fix the bug on nokia camera beta

vlad0 says:

It will be fixed when it comes out of beta, just like the whole OS..

just kidding
