Torchbear goes live in the Marketplace

We first mentioned the Windows Phone app Torchbear a couple of months ago when the developer needed beta testers. Well, the kinks have been ironed out and Torchbear has left the Beta stages and is now available over at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

What is Torchbear you ask? Torchbear is described as a mobile geolocation based social network game. You create a torch that can be a thought, idea or image. You then create a mission for your torch and share it with other Torchbear users around the world.

For example, you can create a torch calling for the posting of photos that make you think of the fall season (that's the mission) and add your own photo to the torch. You then monitor how many exchanges, comments, and followers keep the torch burning. You can also monitor how far the torch has traveled. You can even map out where your torch has been and monitor your torches progress from Torchbear's website.  The goal is to generate the most activity from your torch.

You do have to register with Torchbear (free) and it's interesting to see how far your torches can travel around the globe. Torchbear is a free app and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

This is such an awesome concept and idea. I wish they would shorten the distance you need to be to someone else in order to pass on a torch though. Because of where I live, and with how few people there are right now, I'm going to have to sit on the sidelines for a looooong time.

NeilJonesMan says:

Its pointless sitting on the sidelines. Create a torch then other people will know where you are and they will notify you. New people are joining every 30 seconds. Get in the game man :)

So, do I have to be less than a mile from the next person at the time I pass a torch on? or less than a mile from where I was when I picked it up? I travel tens (if not hundreds, sometimes thousands) of miles in a day! Do I have to go back to where I was - or is my travel part of the fun?

NeilJonesMan says:

You have to be less than 1 mile from the torch you want to pick up. Traveling is definitely part of the fun. You pick up other peoples torches as you go and take them to amazing places (the torch creators gets to see the world through the torch they created).1) Go somewhere and find a torch that you like.2) Send a reqeust to exchange torches with the torch holder3) when they accept you get there torch4) move to a new loction/update torch position/ add photos or comments to the torch inline with the torch mission5) Pass the torch onto someone else and pick up a new torch
