Unofficial Tinder dating app released again for Windows Phone as talks fail for an official one

Although Windows Phone is gaining official apps left and right, Tinder isn't one of them. A few months ago, developer extraordinaire Rudy Huyn released an app called 6tindr, which brought all the features over from the famous partner finding service. The app caught the attention of Tinder, who was not pleased and promptly asked for the removal of the app. The good news to the story was that Tinder approached Huyn about turning his app into the official one. But that was in January and six months later, there's nothing.

Rumors began circulating that one of the people in charge of Tinder was blocking the development of the Windows Phone app, and not giving their approval for the project to go forward. Whatever the intention, Huyn became frustrated as Windows Phone users grew impatient.

Today, a new app called 6tin has been released to the Store. It is the same old 6tindr app from yore, but with a new app link listing and a slightly new name. The app is once again from Rudy Huyn, though he is remaining mum so far on the application's release. The app does feature some exclusive options not available even from Tinder, including:

  • Review last passed persons to like them if you made a mistake or changed your mind
  • Select manually your geo-localization on a map without GPS
  • Send message using voice recognition
  • Be able to save photos of your contacts on your phone
  • Open directly your friend profile from a picture saved on your phone (rich media extensibility)

It is not clear if Tinder will once again ask for the removal of the app or if they have compromised by letting Huyn's app exist on Windows Phone. Until this issue clears up, you may want to download the app today, just in case anything does happen to its listing.

Thanks, Andrew D., Joost De N., and others for the tips!

SwimSwim says:

Downloaded just because it might be delisted. Odds of me using it? .00000001%, but still. :P

eshy says:

just in case of a divorce?

SwimSwim says:

Well, I'd have to graduate highschool, college and get married first, but then you know it! ;P

b23h says:

You're timeline makes sense except for one part, I am sure that your future wife would not appreciate you using Tinder AFTER getting married.   Using Tinder before getting married is called dating, after it's called adultery or "having an affair".   There's a different app for that (or perhaps not on WP).

dysje says:

So what is it called when you and your wife share the same third person at the same time?

b23h says:

Good point.   Ah, that didn't even come to mind, however in the context of a teenager let's call that an "optional advanced class", and simply focus on the basics.

Ticomfreak says:

Im a teenager, I even program on Windows Phone/RT. ;)

And yes, in C# in VS/Expression Blend, not AppStudio.

ScubaDog says:

I think you missed the full context.  The first message asked "after the divorce?", based on an assumption that SwimSwim was married.  His response makes perfect sense if you remember that point.  In other words, SwimSwim was saying "Sure, after the divorce...but I'd have to graduate HS, college and get married first, otherwise I couldn't actually get divorced".

b23h says:

You're correct, my error.

Someone needs to start making a black book. Having backups is always handy to have :P

terrokkinit says:

Agreed. I just downloaded it, just in case it happens again. Mwah ha ha ha!!!

NorBoii says:

Finally! Downloading right now just in case.

Bratticus182 says:

Timber is good too

sueha says:

Indeed! Don't know why Timber is not getting advertised here. Saved my ass when 6tindr was banned.

Simple. I have never heard of it. I don't use Tinder. And we have barely any tips, at least none recently.

spinzeroWL says:

Installed Timber today. It is a paid app with no trial....but it is well built and doesn't have the bugs that are symptomatic of Huyn apps.
Definitely worth a review (though I dare say that'll alert the pricks that run Tinder!)

BeatSync says:

It looks like it's just based off of this open source project.

bitfarm says:

Dude, Rudy is doing an excellent job of providing us unofficial apps of the services which are run by clowns. Respect that, please. :)

Localhorst86 says:

It is a paid app with no trial

And that is exactly why hardly anyone has ever heard of it. I heard of it once but as soon as I realised this fact I imediatelly forgot about it. No way am I gonna pay for an app that I cant even try to see if it fits my needs, even if it is just $1.99 or even $0.99.

sueha says:

Makes sense. Would have been worth a post though. It was just wonderful to see how the developer started with an absolute crap app and ended with a really good app by updating it 2-3 times a week.

luimende says:

You've never heard of it, but you have received some tips?  Hmm.

Planblover08 says:

Never heard of timber also

mab664 says:

This is the only app im missing! Tryin to get at these hoes!

spinzeroWL says:

Timber has been available for ages....works really well. Better than 6tindr, that's for sure.

paulxxwall says:

You shouldn't need an app for that......there hoes everywhere ;

jgbstetson says:

Grab your pitchforks!

IceDree says:

Pitchforks? That ain't no fun ... I wanna hold the burning stick! Lol ;)

poddie says:

Are those real pictures of Rudy in the app screenshots? Hilarious... esp using the wolverine claws as his profile...

rudyhuyn says:

not a claws, it's windows phone devices ;)

atharva117 says:

Windows phone devices = claws... Lol.. I will tear down Google and Apple....

poddie says:

Amazing how the mind fills in the details when you don't look closely...

Who was that one person among the group that was possibly blocking the development? Someone bribed by Google? I'm doubtful because Google has its own records of doing such things

Sachin V says:

Well, we currently don't know the full name, but according to some reports his first name is Dick!

manwe says:

Richard? Richard who?

Richard_Indy says:

I resent that. :)

I'm genuinely confused at companies who still won't allow apps on Windows Phone even if they're made for them for free! The only reason these services become popular is by getting them in front of as many potential customers as possible, why deliberately block over 50 million users (and growing) from your service?

Ugh.

But yay for Rudy, such a shame he's been messed around by Tindr for half a year though, just think of all the other things he could have worked on. Hopefully they at least have the good grace to let this app exist peacefully just like Instagram, Vine, and SnapChat do.

And not to mention the case he had with his 6Studio as well.
Their reasoning was hilarious!

Schikitar says:

Well even execs at companies can be fanbois and hold a grudge because of personal opinion. They probably own a MacBook and hate MS and suddenly thousands of people miss out. Good on you Rudy, wish you could clone yourself to do more alternative apps that are better than the official ones *cough*Facebook*cough*.

hakmi says:

Agreed. cough cough cough

MikeSo says:

Free? Let's say someone provided an app for them for free.
3 months later, they want to make changes to their database, add functionality to their apps, change the user accounts etc...
All of a sudden, they have to do it on WP as well, because if they don't people will scream about how awful the app is in comparison (or it might even break it).
It's not just about putting app up and them never touching it. See how well that works for the companies that have done it (hello match.com, who hasn't updated their app since October of 2010... Four years ago!). I doubt it does anything for their business.
I wish the profitability of putting an app up for WP was proven. That's the only way they'll do it.

Wael Hasno says:

Well played, Rudy. Downloading this now.

IceDree says:

The name sounds like Sexting ... Feels like one of Rockstar Games' names in the GTA universe lol,

Darren Walsh says:

Just chat a chick up in the pub and bang! See what I did there lol

LOL! It appears more like "Sixteen" or "Six Teen" to me :P
Edit: Not sure why I'm telling this to you, it was meant for IceDree above

salmanahmad says:

Though I have never used this app and probably never will I would suggest that Rudy or someone else uploads the XAP file of this app anonymously somewhere just in case something happens.

rudyhuyn says:

I will do it if it is the case

spinzeroWL says:

Nice app Rudy (my 6tindr app finally died the other day....it was becoming progressively worse with each WP8.1 update!).
Anyway, just one problem I've noticed. 6tin doesn't hold the manual geolocation. It resets when I exit and then enter the app. 6tindr used to hold on to that manual location a lot better...
Keep up the good work

toraji says:

Only connect through facebook???

sueha says:

Believe me: That's what makes this app better (better means there are more beautiful girls) than other sexual, uhm social networks like Badoo.

palmujukka says:

I hate FB logins but that's what the official iOS and Android apps use as well, so I guess Rudy had to use it as well.

toraji says:

Rudy, I understand you have to play by their rules but don't you think bigger audience will be reached if you can log in without a must have Facebook account??? I for one will never open a Facebook account and I know many people that feel the same. I am also not a tinder user but I was curious about your app, so since I don't have Facebook I will also not have a tinder account sounds like a missed opportunity to me.....

Anyway I LOVE and appreciate all you do for the WP community

BIG THANKS man!!!!!

iyae says:

Its. How. The. Official. App. Works.

It's impossible ... Tinder uses FB account for matches.

dalydose says:

It's in the service and just because you won't use Facebook doesn't mean that there isn't a big audience who does. Just make an empty account, if it is so horrible to fathom being on Facebook.

Sicarius123 says:

Empty accounts wont see other users on Tinder.

Sicarius123 says:

Rudy has made an app that connects to a service, he hasn't made a service. If you don't have facebook friends, or any likes in facebook, tinder is empty. It's a six degrees of seperation app, that's how it works.

mango.lover says:

The gall of some people.

Sicarius123 says:

It's basically a six degrees of seperation dating app. It'll find you people with mutual friends, or mutual interests. If you have a placeholder facebook with no likes and no friends to use for app logins, it's going to be very lonely in tinder :p

spinzeroWL says:

It doesn't work like that.
Even if you have no mutual interests or friends, you are still served up matches that meet your search criteria.

Yeap, agree, It will work through location. People around you, not by interest or mutual friends.

theefman says:

Don't know why people are so eager to use a service that so obviously doesn't want to cater to them.

spinzeroWL says:

Because I don't give a damn about who runs the service...I care about where the women are :). & Tinder has the lions share of said women!

dalydose says:

Right? Keep all the too cool for Facebook dudes away! Better odds for the rest of us!

Rudy Huyn is Jesus <3

Arda Ozkal says:

Mathias "Hell 4 Woman" Lindberg

Jrexxx says:

Title sounds so political! :P

Rudy should just say "screw tinder" he is trying to make them money. If your reading this rudy...change the name and take 100% profit and don't let tinder get a penny. You done all the hard work. They keep screwing you up...so screw them up, go in alone (we will support you) and tell tinder to stick it

mango.lover says:

Unofficial apps are better anyways. I have Meet'm (unofficial Grindr) and appreciate the unlimited blocks it gives me.

dalydose says:

Oh thank you. I now have an app to reference to the dudes that spam every unrelated app thread with, "Where's Grindr?". They'll just whine that it's not official, though.

mango.lover says:

They should be celebrating instead of whining. I repeat: unlimited blocks!

HarkAtYou says:

I much prefer meet'm to official grindr. Although I used to used grindr on the iPhone and I don't recall ever having a limo on blocks, however it was a rip off, it started off at someone like £0.30 a month, and by the time I left it was closer to £6.70 a month!!! Meet'm is free, except for a one off £0.60 cost to unlock messaging. The best part about it isn't the unlimited blocks, its that when someone sends you an abusive message and blocks you, on iPhone you would get a notification that you had a message, but would never receive it or know who it was from if they blocked you before you read it. On meet'm, it not only lets you receive it and notifies you when someone blocks you, but it still lets you message them! If you send another message, it removes the block! Brilliant for all those twats that can't stand rejection :D
One thing I miss however, on a jailbroken iPhone you can fake your location. There's no such thing yet on windows phone. I miss that a lot. I don't use the app locally, but would like to talk to people in another town.

There is one kind of work around, if you go to another town, use the app. Then remove its permission to use location services, it will work as if you're in that town forever. Not ideal, but works

andresalviar says:

That's cool, do you imagine having 6grin? xD would be like, awesome.

palmujukka says:

Tinder never replied to my tweets about WP support, so they may ask for this app's removal. Btw, there's a paid "Tinder 2.0" app in the store (not made by Rudy), they should remove that app too if 6tin gets removed from the store.

spinzeroWL says:

Timber has also been available for quite a while. Works really well.
6tin is the best of the lot as it retains the manual location selection (which is something that is not available on the official iOS or Android apps). It's a great way to meet people in other countries ahead of going travelling etc.

Ygglens says:

It's not available in Norway, for some reason.

Ygglens says:

Changing reagon fixed it. Really good app!

Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!

rudyhuyn says:

I'm not Beetlejuice or Bloody Mary :D

Arda Ozkal says:

:D :D Nothing to say. Great joke. Great dev. Great app. Have a question to a good dev, about my code, which does not work, Im putting my help request right here: Help requested, only for credits, ardaozkal@outlook.com

JoRdaNeK says:

Bada dah, badah dah!

eric12341 says:

If only there was an option in the app to hide age like there is on Facebook itself.

spinzeroWL says:

Why would you want/need to do that?

eric12341 says:

Don't want people to know my age, and because I like younger women. Young enough to be in college.

b23h says:

So you lie to them until they meet you and see the duplicitous creature that you are.   How is that working for you?

P.S.  rhetorical question

eric12341 says:

I'm not that old (I'm 26) and I don't look my age. Just a lesson that they shouldn't judge someone until they meet them.

b23h says:

yo comprendo, you're not as old as I feared.

Judas20 says:

I didn't know we had pedophiles over here

eric12341 says:

Last time I checked, college girls are adults. That doesn't make me a pedophile by any stretch of the imagination.

IDK, my experience with tinder so far was all spammers using bots to scam me. LOL

What I believe is happening is some of these developers are indeed fanboys and they just hate MS others are just getting revenged for who knows what MS did to them.  Let's remember that no too long ago MS used to called the shots and now these developers  feel empower and the best way to get MS, is to ditch it all together.  But I believe they are making a huge mistake, why? Simple; apps populatity goes up and down just as days and nights  but history has shown that MS always come back stronger than before. And the hunk of cash MS posses is not tinker to play around,  they should think better their strageties and not get in MS' black list or any given big company list.

We can count the popular apps out there and many of them come from big developing companies; for example, Amazon, KiK, Whatsapp, althought FB came from a dorm this ain't happening anymore, Twitter, Google's apps, Nokia, and even MS', etc.  So, what is the chance of a developer to create an app from his/her dorm that become popular and not be crush by those power houses?  So, although they may be laughing at MS pain they may regret it in the future.

smoledman says:

I think what you're saying is true. The Instagram founder is on record as hating Microsoft. A lot of these Silicon Valley mobile app developers are total Apple fanboys and despise MS to the depths of their souls. MS is gonna have to make things happen.

TonyDedrick says:

Or it could just be a matter of resources and not being interested at the moment. Not everything is some crazed conspiracy against Microsoft

I can accept that with some developers, but if you have resources for Android & IOS I'm pretty sure you have for WP. It's a matter of choice for the grand majority. As smoledman mentioned above we all know many of this guys despite MS so they will do anything they can to "bring it down."

ThePKReddy says:

Bring one "evil company" down, only to promote other evil companies....apple google...more google than apple

b23h says:

There's no doubt there's a "fair" amount of ill will towards MS from some quarters, however your statement "if you have resources for Android & IOS I'm pretty sure you have for WP" does not follow.   Yes, one may make resources for a mobile OS with seventy percent of the market or fifteen.   However a US company is looking at what, three percent for WP.

The reality is coding for mobile platforms is challenging, but once you get one down, transitioning from one to another is not a giant leap. Many iOS apps are written in Objective-C which is not a far cry from  C++. And guess what language most Android and Windows Phone apps use? And all 3 support translated languages like C#.  It's sort of like learning American English vs. Queen's English.

Alan Sylvain says:

I like your post. In your scenario, which English in Windows Phone? Please say it's the Queen's English! ;-)

Posted via the WPC App for Android!

I dont buy it!  The iPhone was the king since it came out in 2007 until 2011 when Androind finally dethrone it from the top. And I stil remember developers creating applications for the Android OS even when they only have less than 5% market share.  Let's remember Symbia, RIM and other mobile OS where still "in the fight."  So, the 3% excuse is just that an excuse, plus most of the biggest apps ain't coming from the US, they are coming from Europe and Asia from very wealthy develping companies.

b23h says:

I think there was people in MS who scoffed at the iPhone at first which ended up being an error.  While I never buy Apple products I never dismiss them out of hand.   I expect that it was clear to some people that the iPhone was a significant innovation and it is my understanding that some of the early developers who hit big got rich from their apps, it was a gold rush of sorts.    I simply do not think that pointing out the iPhone early in it's rise as an innovative product remaking the mobile phone industry is anything like pointing to WP's re/entry into the same industry at that point somewhat mature and dominated by iOS and Android.

Please list the apps and countries you're talking about.   I don't think that WP is doing particularly well in Asia, it's just shy of catatonic in China and Japan.   I think in some countries where we are doing well like India, we are seeing some of the local banking, transportation, etc. apps that are a little more deficient here in the US.

Candy Crush by King may be an example for you, however Flappy Bird would not be.

I agree with you that many at MS headquarters were arrogant including their boss and this is one of the things that many developers hate about MS. I believe with the new boss and with all the pain incurred the environment is changing for the good.
Whasapp, KiK, Finland's Angry Birds, Russia's Cut the Rope, and Australia's Fruit Ninja.....

What's wrong with these people in Tinder? Besides the fact that the whole name of that shenanigans is from a rape-diary of an US college kid (tinder => timber => have some booze and have with her), what do they gain from not supporting a specific OS?

I don't like the premise of Tinder. Incredibly shallow..

spinzeroWL says:

The rest of the animal kingdom chooses a partner based on their looks. This app just speeds up that process.
Also, don't confuse a mutual physical attraction has being shallow. This app just provides a very quick and easy gateway to determining if someone you are aesthetically attracted to is also someone you are intellectually compatible with.
Tinder works because this is exactly how humans operate in real life. We are attracted to someone physically; we then try and work out if there is something more.

Anybody in India is this app or even tinder!?

If it is someone @ Tinder who is blocking it because of personal opinion of MS, that could be bad news if it gets confirmed as the reason it was blocked. Simply blocking a platform for personal prejudice is bad business sense these days. It can cost you investors, potential partners and cause a ton of negative press. It could be that they are waiting for the official Windows Phone 8.1 release and the new integration features, it could be a developer who simply doesn't want to learn how to write WP apps (which I don't get since the shop I work in fires people for that attitude. The head honcho is a developer himself and he goes on his rant about how they are all similar to code for to some extent so it's not like having to learn Japanese overnight for a developer), or it could be they want a "Unity" style app that gets both WIndows Phone and WIndows Tablets in one app package, or any number of other reasons. I can think of a ton more. Personally though, I would like to thank Mr. Huyn for his work on 6tin, and also wonder if he will update it to match the newer version that just came out on Android. This brings me down to only one app I use which I keep an Android device, and that app is one I rarely use anyway. Thank you Mr. Huyn for your time and efforts. It is appreciated.

Ankmeyester says:

Which app is that? Which is still pending for you?

So, you got date Daniel?

Alan Sylvain says:

Purely because I wouldn't use Tindr or 6Tin... I just thought I'd mention the same has happened with Grindr... It's called Meet'm. How long it'll be available I'm not sure but the official Grindr page has been saying windows phone app in development for over 2 years now... So for fed up of waiting!!

It also cuts down on people making fake profiles (the pictures are drawn from the Facebook users profile pictures). It also adds legitimacy as it tells you how many friends you have in common etc.
I personally think it's a very good system, and a very good platform. I have only come across one fake account. Have had plenty of good dates out of this app when I've been on my travels.
Just a shame that Tinder want to prevent Windows Phone users from having the app.

Martin_DE says:

Well, and now not only Tinder knows about your dates, but Facebook also. With all the details. :-/

Fake profiles are an issue, admittedly, but there are other ways to tackle that. It's a general problem all Internet services have, not only Tinder.

Is it just me or does this thing eat battery like crazy?
