Verizon Trophy for the 19th & now with free Xbox game? [Rumor]

Filed under:

So obviously the 12th has come and gone and there's still a ton of signs that the Verizon Trophy is afoot. We know Best Buy's were getting them, employees trained...heck, you know the history and still a no-go. Still, once Microsoft/Verizon pulled those Xbox gamer pics & themes, we knew it didn't look too good.

But with May 24th looming, our bet is Verizon would like to have the phone out before that event (though, missing CTIA in March and MIX11 in April didn't stop them either). WPCentral forum member Aog, who has multiple accounts with Verizon, received a call back today from a Verizon rep--so right there your warning lights should go off--and they claim 19th is the new target date:

"VZW rep called back today. Said trophy was releasing May 19th with a voucher for a free xbox game that can be played on xbox and phone."

Yeah, we hate playing this game too, but we know you Verizon folk want anything to hang on to, even if they are unicorn dreams and fairy musings. Still, like the other release targets, this is very plausible as we know big Red has all their pins lined up here.

Oh and that free Xbox game for the 360/phone--Full House Poker or Ilomilo? We're leaning towards the former. And we're putting that under "plausible" since Verizon does have an Xbox theme/gamer pic tie-in. Anyways, join us in the forums and vent or conspiracy-theorize away.

If it continues this way it will be loaded with Mango on release in early 2012 ....

I've also heard from the manager that the HTC Trophy will be available on May 19.I am not holding my breath though. Trying to but the HTC Trophy is beyond chasing unicorns.

So basically for the last 6 months about 20 bloggers have all been full of **** about their almost monthly (or weekly) predictions that a Verizon WP7 will be released shortly. With all this technology and connectivity we have gone from hyper-text to hyper-rumors; real journalism is almost dead. Oh, btw, did you hear the Trophy was delayed so they could add a gyro for the Mango release? And Obama's birth certificate is fake? And Bin Laden died years ago, the body was on ice? And the iPhone7 will virtualize iOS, Android, WP7, and DOS 3.1? No seriously, its true, I read it on the internet. At least WP Central has been marking stuff with Rumor lately.

(1) We always put rumor when warranted (2) No one is making anything up. Verizon has never publicly submitted a release date for the Trophy, but since December they have had materials showing that they were going to sell it. We've also had people with the device on hand testing it for Verizon, meaning it's close.Verizon's problem is they they have "windows" for release--dates they set and try to make but are not written in stone. That's what you are seeing here: they set a window and for whatever reason, they don't make it at the last minute (inventory, most likely).Notice how we haven't had this problem with AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint Windows Phone releases? So don't shoot the messenger, we just forward our latest info-- blame Verizon for (a) releasing so damn late (b) not setting a firm release date and sticking to it. You can't deny that at this moment, it's Verizon that is holding the release back, not us.

You guys have been better than most for marking (or stating that the information in rumor which is what you should do and let the reader decide if its worth anything. Most of the bloggers are not. 9 out of 10 times they gave specific dates, not windows or timeframes, not stories about supply problems or being bumped by iPhone. Verizon has been very consistent, they stated publically first half 2011. So far they have not broken their word. For the most part the blogasphere has just repeated comments from those that obviously aren't making the final decision as fact (over and over again), so back to my point, most of it has just been just rumors.Overall WPCentral does a very good job, better than most. My comments are directed more at the tech bloggers than at WPCentral. As a side note, I do hate how slow Verizon is, but usually when they do get a device out, it works better and their staff is better trained to sell and support that device. So maybe the slow pace is the trade-off. I just want them them to be both fast and good.

How much real testing needs to be done for a Phone that had been overseas from release and got great reviews?? It's just not a higer end phone but, when it comes to WP7, unless it's a big screen, there really isn't a high end model. This is Verizon draggin their feet 101 (we've been here before). Come on, This phone has been out from the release of WP7, just a CDMA/3G radio needed to be added (it is a world phone). We are talking about HTC here, who does this on every other model, it's not like they are new at this. With the claimed training for WP7 for Verizon employees will take no more than a week, How do you account for this delay ? By my figures this should of been out around or before the HTC Arrive, there is no reason or excuse for this time frame. Problems ? Read on XDA, the 2 testers said the phone worked great with no problems. It's a HTC phone, I didn't think there would be a problem and if there was, it would be very minor, not something that takes this long.

Maybe this is Verizon's passive agressive way to stick it to Microsoft because of the Kin calamity.

verizon killed the kin, not microsoft.if verizon had created a 9.99 data plan for them, that would have been an excellent modern sidekick for tweens. but if a normal data plan had to be attached, it didn't make sense not to go with a full smartphone instead of a glorified featurephone.and now verizon is throwing a tantrum over something they basically killed. bravo verizon.

I just think it's really sad that the company claiming to be the largest cell carrier in the U.S. has put their customers through this unnecessary stress for absolutely no reason. It's already been noted that as Verizon has very little interest or confidence in WP, this phone will be launched without fanfare or promotion. So why not tell their customers in January that a WP phone will be released sometime in May. And we will give you an update when we get closer. Would not have made every customer happy, but would have settled the nerves of many. Verizon's actions regarding this launch is unconscionable, and definitely a case of "making money in spite of themselves". I know people have all kinds of reasons for choosing carriers, but this company deserves everything they get from their once loyal customer base. Really hopes someone figures out how to tether with the Trophy the day it finally gets released. That would be a good start. Honestly can't wait for my Verizon brother's and sister's to get some Windows Phone goodness.

Yeah sadly both Verizon and Sprint have had a cool reception to Windows Phone. It is pretty sad for me, I am on Sprint. I will be switching to AT&T because of it when the Fall wave of devices come out.It is up to the carrier to request a phone from the manufacturers, and both CDMA carriers have requested crappy devices in my opinion. But the bigger problem is that Verizon and Sprint seem to have a one track mind with Android. It's all they care about at all. At least AT&T has a good amount of diversity. I'd say the most of any carrier. They may cost alot more than Sprint for instance, but at least they care about giving people devices they want.

I completely agree... I've been waiting for Verizon to get on board ever since I first saw Windows Phone 7. I just wish Verizon would have more options. Variety is the spice of life.

Screw the game, I want a free Xbox for the time this has taken.

Maybe I should contact that guy selling the Verizon HTC Trophy on craigslist.

Already tried, never got a reply (I live about 4 and 1/2 hours away from where it was, I was going to drive it)

Isn't this the worse WP7 device out there?

It's actually quite nice with the rubber feel to it and it's a nice size. It's not as good as the Mozart, but it's hardly a "bad" device either.

What makes it the worse device. A nice 3.8" SLCD screen, 16GB of built-in memory, so no SD card issues. 0.08" thicker than a Focus, or about the thickness of two credit cards. And 0.7oz. heavier, the weight of two medium binder clips or 15 jumbo paper clips, making it the same weight (and a little thinner) than an iPhone 3GS. Add to that the solid HTC build. Actually a nice device.

I do think the Trophy looks like a nice device. I don't see why people keep bashing it, since the specs are nearly the same as every other WP7 phone out there. That said, the hardware in the phone isn't exactly cutting edge anymore and that's another reason it's disappointing that Verizon has taken so long to release it.Maybe Verizon will surprise me and charge less since the hardware is on the older side, but I doubt it.Even so, I'll still get the Trophy if it ever gets released, and I'm sure I'll be happy with it. I'll just get it off contract so I can either a) bail on Verizon later on if they refuse to support WP7 orb) use my discount on a tasty new Mango-era/Nokia phone next year

that's probably my plan as well.

Here..Here...Same plan as well.

Same plan too.But if by the end of next week we still have no concrete info (really hoped 'wireless vet' had good intel), an ebay Focus is looking more and more likely. Shame.

Judging from the picture it's not hard to stamp a Verizon logo on the phone. So sell it already!

i've gone from being optimistic to release dates for this phone to "i'll believe it when i have one in my hand"honestly though, it's probably right this time, since that's when my focus will probably get back to me from samsung and i'll have to decide on keeping att or going back to verizon.c'est la vie though i guess.for the price i got my focus for, i'll probably keep both and end up using the focus on wifi only or something.i agree with others that ATT right now has the best variety of smartphones on any network.they have the latest blackberrys for people who are stuck 5 years in the past (or use them for work)they have a large selection of android devices (and more importantly, they stock the google phones [nexus one and soon the nexus s])they have a good selection of windows phones (especially once the hd7s gets released)the only problem i have with them is their call dropping (not often, but more than vzw) and their capped data plans (not that i use a ton of data, i usually use about 1 - 1.5GB a month on a heavy month, but i don't want to have to worry about it.the customer service i got from the 3 att stores i went to when doing the whole focus thing though was FAR better than the customer service i get when i go to a verizon store.

You honestly have nailed pretty much everything I feel here. Maybe Verizon has to see a steady decline before they start making customer retaining changes.I have a friend with a Focus in my area and he keeps saying his call quality is really good. It's becoming tough ...

you might want to look on craigslist for one and try the prepaid sim for a month or two (depending on how many calls you make)i found my focus for $200 on CL and the prepaid sim cost me $45 + .10 a minute for 500mb data and unlim text.not a bad way to test out their network imo.

$200????? Wow ... you are quite the temptress. That would be extremely hard to pass up, even though I love the 'worldphone' nature of the Trophy. Hmmm....

I go back to my post in the forums several weeks ago: http://forums.wpcentral.com/general-discussion/177210.htm.Based on all of these Verizon hijinks -- and it really doesn't matter what the reason is, I think Verizon couldn't care less whether or not Microsoft and Windows Phone does well. I mean honestly, do they really have to put folks who have been waiting for a Verizon WP7 phone through all of this???If I didn't know any better, I'd wonder if Verizon is trying to figure out how much customer pain they can cause. Just terrible...

Verizon clearly stated one and only one thing some time ago: they would release a WP7 device in the first half of 2011. They have not yet broken that promise. Period. That is the facts.Perhaps individual Verizon employees (who have been told by their employer not to leak things to the press) have reported inaccurate information. So if you are upset blame the employees who leak the lies; perhaps call Verrzon and tell them those people should be executed (or just fired) for giving you so much grief. But in the real world a company can't completely control their employees. I believe that given the interest over this device that Verizon should have officially given a firm release date long ago and stuck to it. They did the next best thing, they did not give out official information that was wrong. Also Verizon is not stopping you from going to AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint. If you don't like Verizon then vote with your dollars and go to the competion.

From what I've heard rumor of, you guys will be pleasantly surprised about the Xbox game rumor.

Please let it be ilomilo! Love that game on my 360 and was going to be first game I bought when I got my hands on the Trophy.

Since its just a rumor, can you share?

I think there will be choices... it's not a set game that you will get. =)

I posted this in the forum as well, but Twittersphere is talking May31 now:Twittersphere talking May 31st now: https://twitter.com/#!/bc3tech/status/69028687013613568

The sure givaway for release will be if it pops up in the Best Buy ad this weekend. IMHO May 31st would be too late. Release a NoDo Phone right after all the Mango juciness is show off? Yeah you'll sell a LOT of the old versoin.Whatever Verizon. an HD7S on AT&T and a microcell are looking better and better each day.

I got tired of Verizon's run around in Feb. Regardless they are a year behind AT&T. Verizon will want "New Phone" prices ($200) for a phone when AT&T has a better phone for $49. When Mango phones come out, you know AT&T will have them at launch date. Anyone willing to bet that Verizon will have another 6-8 month delay.I swtiched to AT&T 2 months ago. I travel all over the country. I live in NC and in the past two months I have travelled to Seattle and the Florida Keys and lots of places en between, I have never had a call dropped. When I made the switch, I thought once Verizon released a phone I would be sorry. The longer this plays out, the happier I am with my decision. By the way, enjoy the free xbox game for your phone. I will be able to buy a ton of $2.99 games for the difference in the price of the phones $200 vs $49.
