'Weather Live' has now been pulled from the Marketplace [Updated]

Here we go again. The rabidly popular 'Weather Live' app which we reported on last week has disappeared from the Marketplace. The app, which started off at 3 stars quickly rose up in popularity, even bumping the #1 in News & Weather WPCentral app to #2--a first since we released our app months ago.

Now, despite receiving an update or two (we forget), the app is gone from the Marketplace without a trace. Was it the pulling weather data from an un-credited source? Did it violate the Marketplace rules? We're not sure but we hope it returns and soon as it's one of our favorites. The current version still works on your device though, so don't uninstall. This is one of numerous apps that have disappeared recently, including the Colbert Report, MTV News, Kayak, Project Sunburst and Cartoon TV (before it returned, gutted).

We've reached out to the developer for comment and we'll hopefully post a response if/when they get back to us.

Update: We've heard back from the developer--

"The app is using the undocumented (but very popular) Google weather API and late yesterday, there was a major outage at the back end. As such, all live tiles stopped working at the time. I suspect it is because Google blocked my server's access since I have ~1500 queries per hour on the hour...

I made several changes to alleviate the peak load and fortunately they seem to unblocked me this morning. So live tiles started working again. To hopefully ensure users are not subject to the downtime any more, I pulled the app from marketplace.

I do want to come back as this project is really a worthy one to me. However, I am trying to find a good source of data. As you may know, many of them prohibit use by mobile applications."

(Thanks, @Sogeman, for the heads up!)

MS, what are you guys doing?! We don't need good apps disappearing. Also, FYI, I can't even find the newer version of Cartoon TV now. Sad panda is getting sadder.

Hey starBZlade876:It's not MS...the developer pulled it because Google blocked his access to the weather data. How could MS be at fault here? *scratches head*.

It changes things when you have all the facts, but people will be quick to lay blame on the platform holder at first.

Yeah, they didn't say the dev pulled it earlier, so I did jump the gun on that. Still, after derping hard yesterday and resetting my phone, I've realized that MS really needs to work on how apps are handled, namely the reinstallation of apps. I believe apps that you get through Zune get reinstalled if you reset or change your phone when you sync for the first time; this should really happen with apps that you install through your phone, too, but it doesn't. I see the list of apps that I had before in Zune (minus the missing apps), but the ones I originally got through my phone have to be manually searched for, downloaded, and installed one by one. With the pulled apps, they just don't show up on the list at all, so, even if you paid for it and it still works for people who still have it, there's no trace of it. Even if they don't want to reinstall paid pulled apps that still work, it'd be much better if you were given an explanation as to why it was pulled; if a dev pulls their app, require them to provide an explanation that users will see when they try to reinstall the app. Instead, we're left in the dark, wondering what happened and feeling like we essentially just threw away money until we maybe hear from the dev or something.

Good on the developer but I guess it's fun and fashionable to blame MS!

Hi,I am the developer of Weather Live and thanks for all the interest and support for this petite project of mine.I went through several ups and downs on this app and it was very "satisfying" to hear that it bumped WPCentral to #2 once, as I myself use WPCentral every hour... :)Appreciate Daniel's mention and that was the main driver for its popularity. Fame comes trouble, I guess. :DI definitely want to bring it back and am trying several channels. Wish me luck on this as I definitely need it.Thanks again.

it has been pulled because it just did not work for many people. me included.
