WhatsApp hits v1.2 for minor cosmetic changes, landscape support

Speaking of updates, WhatsApp not only updated their app description to reflect a future subscription fee, but also bumped the app to v1.2. So are we finally getting video support? Group chat? How about some avatars in the conversation? Nope.

Instead, under Favorites now, they ditched the letter-picker system, at least if you only have a few contacts. This makes Favorites much more streamlined. It also looks like the Task bar has been thinned out, giving more room on the main screens. Finally you get a  Favorites refresh button under Settings, which is good if you want to make sure you have all of the latest contacts showing.

Update: We've also noticed it now thankfully has landscape support for typing and better auto-correct. HTC Arrive and LG Quantum users, rejoice! (*Also note, you're not crazy--it will still say v1.1 under the About section as the developers forgot to update that part).

Grab it here in the Marketplace (Zune link) or the Web Marketplace.

Baby steps.

Hoekie says:

Improving startup time is no baby step. Also landscape support. Nice update.

Relief says:

Starup time? Its still the same to be honest.Landscape support is useless for non-keyboard devices. You cant even see the chatscreen when typing. At least they could have fixed the oversized input balloon and the oversized Name area. The Name area is the worst. It takes a third of your screen...Whatsapp should first improve the conversation interface and put some nice animations there. Too much useless space and oversized areas. When you press anything you dont get any feedback.Edit: okay okay startup time is a bit faster.

Wouldn't they get the message (threads) interface as a model and just reproduce it? Or this is not available? Their (threads) interface is so neat and well thought, I'd love if Whatsapp follow the same ideas. And, in the feature, to be integrated as one of the messaging providers (along with Facebook, Live network, etc)

Disinto says:

Still too slow to access a conversation and still consuming lots of CPU (the battery drain is important)... :(However, startup time is slightly improved and contact list browsing as well.

i cant see it?

You can force the update by checking the app on the Marketplace.

Lobbie1978 says:

How? Cause if you go to the Marketplace on your phone, it just displays the 'Share' button, and if you try to install it from Zune, the 'buy' button stays grayed out...There is no update available for me yet... Hope it comes soon!

Lobbie1978 says:

Thanks! Never knew this! I updated just now!

NickMon68 says:

I cant get that to work...watched the video too. 8-(

Anyone experiencing problems when receiving pictures? When I touch a picture, it doesn't display it...

Livett says:

I have this problem too. When a picture is sent tapping it does nothing, and tapping and hold only brings up a delete option. Broke?

Disinto says:

Actually it doesn't work when the connection is too slow. Really weird.

marcosbabu says:

In my case it depends on the time of connection I am. Like its downloading in the background, but there's no signaling of that operation whatsoever. And theres no timeout notification either, so you just wait and wait.

Lobbie1978 says:

Haven't got the update yet, but the issues I experienced with v.1.1:- Startup time is a bit slow, even if you have the app running in the background (fast app switching)- Tapping on a contact doesn't open it instantly- Notifications some time don't work- There is that annoying Android figure in the top right of the splash screen... ;-)What has been adressed in this v.1.2 guys?

Have never had a notification fail yet.

Need to improve the format of the speech bubbles, looks awful. Also when typing long message you lose the text below the keyboard and then your simply stuck (even when the keyboard closes)

Disinto says:

Yes it seems that they're doing so many workarounds instead of using standard Metro UI components. That's why it's so slow...

marcosbabu says:

I wonder if those Metro UI components are all available as templates. No developer around here to back me?
