Windows Phone 7.8

Windows Phone 7.8 is an upcoming (and perhaps final) OS upgrade to the Windows Phone 7.x platform.  Windows Phone 7.x is based off of the CE kernel while Windows Phone 8 allowed Microsoft to transition over to the much more robust NT kernel. Because of this, current Windows Phone 7.x users (Nokia Lumia 710, 800 900, HTC Titan II, Radar, etc.) cannot upgrade to Windows Phone 8.

Announced back in June 2012 at the Windows Phone Summit, the 7.8 upgrade was said to come after the release of Windows Phone 8 later that fall. Indeed, Microsoft has now confirmed that it is due to hit carriers and devices sometime in “early 2013”.

Features have not been officially confirmed in the update except for the inclusion of the new Start screen experience i.e. three Tile sizes: small, normal and the doublewide. In addition, re-branding of Zune to Xbox Music and the new Xbox Games icons have been changed, plus the Bing lockscreen wallpaper feature. Other smaller changes are expected in the final release build, pegged at 7.10.8858.

Currently it is unknown which phones will get the update nor which carriers will support it, but Nokia and HTC are expected to fully embrace the rollout.

Microsoft is holding back on the Windows Phone 7.8 update, according to Vodafone Germany. A member of the community team responded in a thread on the mobile operator forum that the reason customers aren't receiving the update is because Microsoft has halted the process. Vodafone originally planned to release the update to consumers through February.

Earlier this year, Samsung Italy announced that the Samsung Omnia W would receive Wi-Fi tethering capability with the Windows Phone 7.8 update. Well... that didn't happen.

Samsung Italy sites that the Windows Phone 7.8 update was issued directly from Microsoft and for whatever reason, the tethering feature didn't make the cut.  That's the bad news. The good news is that Samsung Italy is working on a separate maintenance update for the Omnia W that will bring tethering into the fold. Look for the update to hit the air in the coming weeks.

We've previously looked at a Live Tile issue on Windows Phone 7.8, but it seems as though the issue with the feature could be worse than we originally thought. Owners have complained that tiles are not updating correctly or are "bugging out" with massive amounts of data being utilised with consequences on the battery charge. This isn't good, especially when the Live Tiles are a major selling point of the OS.

With the Windows Phone 7.8 update finally starting to find its way on board user’s devices, bringing with it the cosmetic upgrades of Windows Phone 8, here at Windows Phone Central our readers are noticing that not all is well for their newly-sized live tiles.

Users over in our forums have spotted that since the 7.8 update, their live tiles (those updated by background tasks at least) do not seem to be refreshing correctly.

A lot of times these issues are device specific, but in this case we’re not convinced. I recently had a conversation with Lawrence Gripper (developer of BBC News Mobile) after he got in touch to ask if we had been receiving an abnormal number of support requests since 7.8, we have. Just like the reviews you'll see for BBC News Mobile, several users have been in touch complaining that their tile seems to have ceased updating now that they have installed the new OS update.

Just when you thought the Dell Venue Pro was being relegated to being a Wikipedia page, it looks like the Windows Phone with a bottom slide keyboard is making one more swan song.  We received a tip that the unlocked, unbranded Dell Venue Pro was getting updated to Windows Phone 7.8 and sure enough, it is!

It was a pleasant surprise seeing this old, no longer in production, Windows Phone getting the update.  The Dell Venue Pro joined the HTC Arrive and LG Quantum as the only Windows Phone with a slide out keyboard.  The Dell Venue Pro is a decent Windows Phone and it's a shame the other devices aren't getting the same level of attention.
