Windows Phone 8 OS build 9905 rolling out for AT&T? Maybe not. [Updated]

We were just sent this photo a few minutes ago from site reader Mark H. who was frequenting his local AT&T store. The update appeared on not just one phone but a few of them...

“I'm in an AT&T store (looking for wireless charging pods), and caught this on two of their Nokia's, one 820 (this pic) and one 920. My phone says I am up to date at 9903.”

The question is, is this for commercial phones or is that a special demo OS for in-store devices? By that we mean some in-store phones in the past have shown a mini-movie of the OS in action as well as other things to demonstrate the software. That could be the case here with those phones needing a patch of some sorts.

Current commercial phones have Windows Phone 8 9903 on them, so this update to 9905 would represent a minor but still significant change.

We just checked our phones and like the tipster we have no update waiting. Neither have we heard from Nokia or Microsoft about an impending OS change, so we’re chalking this up to just an AT&T-Store thing. But hey, we’ll be excited if it is something else and we will gladly eat crow.

Update: We can now confirm from an AT&T employee that this is a Demo OS update

"All this update does is add "device alive" which is at&t's demo loop on all the phones.  It's that video that plays over and over show a device's features and capabilities."

(Thanks Danny for the heads up)

AT&T equals maybe not.

xattica says:

I make a thread about this today afternoon.  The update was available since yesterday!

xattica says:

In my case, there are no issues so far with 9903

lerimer says:

Nothing yet on mines....

LCARS says:

For what it's worth, the mini-movie is just an app that is installed on those phones. However, they are all pre-populated with sample data and whatnot. They must do something special to image the phones that way. From looking at the UI, it appears to be a normal Windows Phone 8 install with sample data and demo apps. Interesting.

dbgman says:

No update on mine. I hope they come out with a fix for the wifi sleep issue and ringtones for text/email. These are nagging problems leftover from windows phone 7.

PS Has anyone heard when Tango is coming out for WP8?

Jf.Vigor says:

Tango for wp8? Lol

AT&T getting ready to fix the rottening software crap they loaded on the phone that is messing up everyones phone. Thank god i got an unlocked version where i dont have to sit and wait on them to fix their own mess.

jfa1 says:

any ATT software apps put on the phone can be uninstalled so thats not likely to be the cause of any issues.  Thats been the case since WP 7.0 with all apps.

Well the AT&T lumia 920 is carrying a specially upgraded LTE chip so this phone is different from the international unlock manufacturer's spec Lumia 920.  I would underestimate the software on the AT&T lumia 920s being different from the unlocked international 920s

Nobody is getting this update

elmopio says:

I believe that is the demo version for the store. Because on Friday morning I seen that build also.

dtboos says:

It may be the Nokia fix for Daylight Camera sharpness.  Coming soon hopefully.

My only grievances are all audio-related. No WAV audio playback (voicemails from Exchange), doesn't pause playback when unplugging headphones, and weird audio alerts while on-call... it plays the text alert twice then plays the email alert (all very faint, which I'd expect... but the double-text is distracting).

lets just hope

They needed to have that. The store near my house looked as though they were going to give the Windows Phones some respect but there's only one actually sitting on the display and since the screen times out it looks like it's not even powered on. I was waiting to talk to a manager on Sunday and playing around with their 920 (which has the security tag over the camera like others have reported) and 3 people walked over to look at it after seeing the display!

xattica says:

All Nokia apps are getting an individual update aswell.

JDsalt says:

Its the newest demo loop software for the demo devices.

tds101 says:

Why talk crap about AT&T? All their apps are fully removable, and the software is pretty darn solid. It's usually the locked down Android (boot loader from the manufacturers) or iPhones that you should be talking about.

I mean, for a walled garden WP8 is more open than most like to admit.

ade333 says:

I think something glazed over here is the use OTA updates. Knowing about them and seeing them in wide spread use are two very different things.

Drest says:

Have 2 issues with my new Lumia 920 that i am hopeful an update will repair.
Problem one: cannot open a ".wav" attachment from my email (outlook).  Works fine with my 900.
Problem two: My bluetooth seems to pair with my car bluetooth, but will not connect.
