We have been tipped off that the first over the air update ‘Portico’ for Windows Phone 8 might be hitting devices on Vodafone Spain.

One of our readers was informed by push notification last night that the update was available and is now sporting 8.0.10211.204 on his HTC 8X.

Earlier in the week Bloomberg stated that HTC had scrapped plans for a 5” or higher Windows Phone due to the inability of the OS to scale up to 1080P. Sure, the device could pass muster with 720P or 768P but for a major device like that to hit now or in early 2013 would behind the competition.

Now it’s being reported that Microsoft’s Ballmer met directly with the CEO of HTC, Peter Chou, when he passed through Taiwan recently. In of itself this is not news as the two mega CEOs reportedly exchange emails and meet several times a year. But in this case, the limiting resolution of the Windows Phone 8 and presumably other areas of contention were brought up.

Although we have gone over a lot of the changes in the Windows Phone 8 ‘Portico’ update that started rolling out today (build 10211), there were a few tiny nuggets that even we missed.

Luckily Microsoft has gone ahead and printed out all the changes in detail on the site and while there is nothing that’s stop-the-presses, the details should satisfy those who need to know.

Samsung has pushed out a number of system updates for the ATIV S Windows Phone. The device has only just started hitting supported markets and we're already seeing improvements being applied by the manufacturer, which could be viewed as a strong sign of support. So what has been updated?

Microsoft has published a new entry on its Windows Phone Blog, detailing available languages in Windows Phone 8. A popular question has been asked by consumers, "When will Windows Phone support my language?". It's a demand that Microsoft has been addressing, much like market availability and developer access to tools and Store submission.

Windows Phone 8S by HTC Review

Windows Phone Central's review of HTC's mid-range Windows Phone 8 device

The Windows Phone 8S by HTC has been a quiet little device, which has recently launched in a number of markets to compliment the more advanced HTC 8X. As a mid-level Windows Phone, the 8S sports hardware that’s powerful enough to process majority of tasks quickly, but it's main attraction is the affordable price tag.

While the HTC 8X is a strong choice for those who require more power and a larger display, the 8S fits in with those who are new to Windows Phone or smartphones in general, not to mention consumers who either don’t require much horsepower, or have enough funds for high-end devices. The issue is there's a lot of competition out there, and Nokia is just starting to get back into the game with Windows Phone 8.

The HTC 8S is available on both contracted plans and Pay As You Go (PAYG), but does not break the bank balance. We’d like to throw out a thanks to Clove for sending us the unit for this review to be completed. The HTC 8S is currently available on their website. We’ve been using the device for little more than a week, but what do we make of the hardware? If you’d like the short version: we’re impressed, but there are annoyances.

We've followed the development of Pictures Lab, by René Schulte fairly closely since it was unveiled to be updated for Windows Phone 8. The latest release adds more functionality, applies performance improvements and more for users to take full advantage of. While the app itself sports Lens support in Windows Phone 8, Schulte has released Face Lens on the Windows Phone Store.

How does one synchronise content between a Windows Phone and a Windows PC or Mac? Microsoft is continuously developing two separate clients, one for each platform, enabling consumers to charge, synchronise, update and backup their Windows Phone. While both clients are not identical in features and functionality, basic tasks can still be completed.

Moving content between smartphones and computers on competing mobile platforms is pretty much identical to Windows Phone. Apple makes use of iTunes for its management of the iPhone (as well as media players and other devices), while Android opts for a more integrated experience through the use of a file manager.

So how does one get started with available clients?

We’ve already shown a video with a Lumia 920 guts displayed, but it wasn’t a pleasant sight (I personally cringe when people destroy phones for no purpose). Now we’ve got a video where you can see the insides of your Espoo flagship device, but in a much more civilized manner. We’ve got a video of the process to disassemble and assemble a Lumia 920, in great detail too.

If there were one area where Microsoft’s Windows Phone devices should be doing well it is within business. Nokia have just posted a new video extolling the headline features of Windows Phone 8 to the corporate crowd.

Even though Windows Phone has a whole feature set designed to be consumer friendly, it also has arguably the best office friendly apps too, mobile office anyone?
