Windows Phone App Short Take: Badgework

Badgework for Windows Phone

If you've got any Boy Scouts in the house, you may want to take a look at Badgework for your Windows Phone. Badgework helps you keep track of all the requirements to achieve rank in the Boy Scouts from Scout to Eagle.

Each rank within the Boy Scouts requires a series of accomplishments or achievements. They range from earning a certain number of merit badges, displaying a certain skills, and participating in community projects.

Badgework

Badgework lists all the ranks within Scouting on the main page and in tapping on the individual rankings, you will pull up the requirements you'll need to meet. Tap the requirement and Badgework will display the particulars of that task.

Badgework is basically a preset task list to get you through the Boy Scout rankings. The app is simply laid out and I can see it coming in handy as your Scout makes their way to the rank of Eagle Scout (which is no easy task). Settings allow for three color themes and Badgework has Live Tile support to display your next rank advancement. It would have been nice to have the ability to export the your progress or back it up to your Skydrive.

As is, Badgework is a nice app.  Granted not everyone is going to see the appeal but if you are into Scouting it's worth a try. Badgework is a free app that you can grab here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

I was in the Boy Scouts, but I have no idea what any of these ranks mean. Either they've changed in the last 20 years, or this is some weird US derivative from the British original

This is the BSA version of Boy Scouts, so the ranks are from the BSA handbook.

I see - I went to the Australian Boy Scouts, which is the same as the British version created by Baden Powell.

Hm... interesting... I didn't realize that the international versions of Boy Scouts were that different.  What are the ranks do that Australian Scouts have?

This is the Boy Scouts of America. Hasn't changed in 100+ years

Ah right... I went to the Australian Boy Scouts, which is the same as the British version created by Baden Powell. The US version was based on that at a later date.

Looks simple for tracking boy scout stuff but my boys are cub age. Clean design. BSA Mobile Scout is another really good one I like and it has cub requirements. The one feature I'm hoping they implement is tracking soon.

What?! There's a better BSA app than mine out there? Just kidding, I'm sure there are plenty.  Cub Scouts requirements have been a popular request, so I am definitely looking into that adding them in a future release.  Also, I'm going to try to add the Skydrive integration mentioned in the article as well as merit badge support soon.
