Windows Phone Insider updated for Windows Phone 8, not much more than a fresh coat of paint

Windows Phone Insider

If you’ve been around the Windows Phone scene you’ve probably stumbled on the Insider app sometime in the past. It’s a sweet offering from the Windows Phone team that offers ringtones, wallpapers, and more. The app was previously at version 3.0.1.0, but we’re now seeing version 1.0.1.0. Is this a new Insider app? Signs point to yes, let’s check it out.

New vs. Old
New vs. Old design

The first thing you’ll notice about the app is the complete redesign. The old app was functional, but nothing to swoon over in the looks department. This new app is both functional and beautiful. You get the same functionality of the old one, but in a much nicer package. Besides the new digs, you’ll notice the app feels faster and performs better. This is what else you get with Insider:

  • Record your own ringtone: Record your favorite sound and easily set it as your ringtone.
  • Exclusive ringtones: 5 new ringtones every month.
  • Free lock screens: Enjoy Bing’s image of the day and Windows Phone fan photos. Submit your own!
  • What’s new: Stay up to date with announcements from the official Windows Phone Blog and Facebook page.
  • Apps + Games: 10 new recommendations every week, plus behind-the-scenes posts on favorite ones.
  • Tips: Get bite-sized tips to learn how to better use your phone.

Insider SC

Besides giving you media to customize your phone, Insider is also supposed to serve as an outlet for the official windows Phone blog and Facebook page. Unfortunately, if you want to read articles you’ll be kicked out of the app and sent to the web browser. Same applies for tips and tricks, out of the app and into IE. You’re in the minority if you want to hop around from app to app and it would have been nice to view the articles within the app itself.

You can grab some images for your lockscreen from the app. The images come from two sources: Bing and fan submissions. Another mark against the app is the inability to let it take over your lockscreen. Instead you’ll need to manually download each image and set it as a single image for the lockscreen. Fast app resume? Nope. But hey, at least we have a double wide tile.

The new coat of paint is nice, but it’s a bit of a letdown that an official app from Microsoft doesn’t take advantage of some of the awesome features of Windows Phone 8: Lockscreen support, fast app resume, voice commands, etc.

The app is free and will slowly be showing up for you Windows Phone 8 users in the Store. The link for me shows the newer app, but Daniel and some other guys here at Windows Phone Central still only see the old app with the same link. Give it time to propagate across the Store and you’ll eventually see the ‘new’ version. We also fired up our Lumia 900 and only see the old version of Insider available for it, sorry Windows Phone 7.x users.

Grab it here in the Store, QR code below, or swipe to the right in our app.

I have used it for the bing images and creating a ringtone.

The ringtone record feature has been there for at least 6 months.

I have a feeling this article had a bit more steam behind it before it was realized that the update really isn't anything to post about.

inteller says:

i already got this yesterday, I wasn't aware it was new or anything.

aschettler says:

This isn't new. The update was released on April 1.

mdscj4 says:

In what way could this app use lock screen support??

Sam Sabri says:

To start? Cycle the images from Bing and fan submissions as your lockscreen image.

mdscj4 says:

Why would you want the images from Bing coming from this app for the lock screen? That's why its built right into the OS.

cdbstl76 says:

I got this update weeks ago...strange...

Sam Sabri says:

It was updated a month back, just looks like everyone missed it.

Dazzi says:

Thankyou Sam I didn't even know this app existed -- I'm going to download now.

New to WP here. Has anyone gotten new ringtones every month? I have WP7.x that I picked up month-and-a-half ago. Its shown the same 16 ringtones since I got it. Have they stopped adding new ringtones to older phones? Are new ringtones just for WP8, now?

Wanted this to be a comment, not a reply.

KFBradley says:

This "fresh coat of paint" came in December. You can understand my confusion... http://www.wpcentral.com/microsoft-updates-insider-app-windows-phone-8-p...

mdscj4 says:

Jesus WPCentral is really slipping. Uninstalling WPCentral for Sam's sake.

Sam Sabri says:

Yeah, we're just in free fall!

Obviously this "slipped" past us. You need to get over yourself if you think we're "really slipping" over this little mistake.

mdscj4 says:

I love your work Sam

What was that??? O.o

OGCF says:

Sorry Sam, looks like my article on Windows Phone Daily may have thrown you off ;) For some reason the web version of the Store isn't even showing the new screenshots which is odd.

Darkgift says:

I got a little confused too...ive had this for months.

I haven't known about this app... I'll try it now! Thanks, Sam, even if this is... Er-r-r... Not new news.

bsd107 says:

"Free lock screens: Enjoy Bing’s image of the day and Windows Phone fan photos. Submit your own!"

How do we actually "submit our own"?  I see this in both articles, but nowhere in the app can I find how to submit the fan photos!

chandan87 says:

how or where can i submit my lumia's pic if i want to ..... so that they can appear on bings page as fan submission .........? any one knows about it  ?? pls help
