Windows Phone NoDo update coming out early March? Here's the story.

Filed under:

While we've generally tried to stray from pinning down an exact date to the Windows Phone 'NoDo' update in addition to posting unsourced rumors on the topic (well, we try), at least this latest one has some things going for it: a name, a place and some pics.

The latest rumor suggests that the Windows Phone 'NoDo' update is coming in early March. We won't say "delayed" because as far as we know, Microsoft has never set a public date. What we do know is that they will most definitely discuss the 800lb gorilla in the room next week at the Mobile World Congress (yes, we'll be there for it).

French site WindowsPhoneFR has the origin of this early March rumor: it stems from an event at TechDays 2011 ("a sort of lounge / conference dedicated to developers, to learn about the latest technology, latest techniques and recent projects" involving Microsoft). The conference was in Paris at the Palais des Congres and one of the editors of WindowsPhoneFR, Julian Vu, was there--so that's why we're posting this.

Samsung had a stand there with a representative and the question was directly asked:

Q: When will the update for Windows 7 Phone?

Samsung A: Probably early March, we will confirm at the Mobile World Congress in mid-February.

So there you go, that's where this all started. Is it true? Maybe. Either way, if you can hold for just a few more days, we're pretty sure we'll get the skinny from Micrsoft themselves, so no use getting in a twist over the exact date, m'kay? Update: The story also jives with one similar posted on WinExtra.

Udpate 2: Mary Jo Foley is confirming ealry March as well now with even more detail

Big thanks to Fabien Patou at WindowsPhoneFR for the heads up!

Bummer. :-/

Hmmmmm...This is a shame. After keeping eveyone in the dark for so long they've finally given some sort of confirmation and it will make everyone sour. Regardless if they never said FEB, That was a strongly hinted and thought of release date of a update which is needed to keep naysayers/analyst/investors/devs/carriers/consumers in their place. oh well guess I'll wait till march. (Mozart)

damn..march..my hd7 has too many issue and bugs to wait till march..it's a shame..microsoft have to hurry up to catch android and ios..they can't slow it down.

The rumor was created by neowin and not windowsphonefr ;) http://www.neowin.net/news/exclusive-windows-phone-7-update-not-due-unti...

Actually, false. WinExtra mentioned it first as "the beginning of March" then hours later Neowin gave the specific date of the 8th through reported carrier contacts. The WinExtra story also mention TechDays and the same scenario: http://www.winextra.com/archives/windows-phone-7-update-to-arrive-in-march/WindowsPhoneFR did not create this, they just gave the best origin story for it. But it jives with the less detailed/verifiable WinExtra story.

This is disappointing to be sure. I love my WP7, but there are a few features that should have been implemented in the beginning (e.g. turn by turn navigation). I bought into the hype that there would be frequent updates/enhancements unlike WM. I am starting to wonder if MS is really committed to their OS.

I am beyond irritated. Originally I was shocked how well MS did with WP7 and I thought they had a chance to really pull it off but they seem to have reverted back to the same old mindless, blind, behemoth. They mislead us by touting they would have quick, incremental updates which was needed to fix some basic bugs/flaws. That is to be expected with a new OS but it is going on 1/2 year and that's un-excusable. That's forever in today's mobile world. Now our expectations will be hard to meet and the press will feed off of the negativity. MS = FAIL.

It was stated in this article that Microsoft never set a date, but in actuality last year it was stated by Joe Belfiore that the first updated would be coming in January of this year, and w/ cut & paste. They MS went on record by saying "Early next year", then (and I may be wrong about this one) understand they stated that it would come out January/February, now we are looking at early March. At this rate, it will be SIX months before we see the 1st update to WP7. Can anyone say windows mobile???

We don't have the whole story so we can't say what the reason for the delay was, it could've been a late bug they found that needed an extra few weeks to test out? And no, it's not 6 months yet, March 8th makes it exactly 4 months if you go buy the Nov 8th US release. Also of note is that some are saying the 2nd update (not Mango) is also done but put on hold due to the delay in this first update. So, if true the 2nd update shouldn't take nearly as long as this first one once they get the process going.

I don't see why people are making such a big stink about the update. seriously its like only 4 things and some minor big fixes. Copy and Paste realistically most people don't use. And the speed increase is nice but right now wp7 is pretty damn quick. As soon as the first update comes people will be begging for another one.

The big deal is this update includes CDMA support. Until it is out, I cannot get a WP7 device on Sprint. And the same goes for Verizon folks. So half the country cannot buy a WP7 device on their carrier even if they wanted to.

Yeah that is why im getting so irritated about is i want cdma support so verizon will get a WP7 phone as i am sick of android. And im really hoping that ms will start getting there stuff together with these updates, although on the other hand im willing to wait just a little longer hoping that more features and bugs will be worked out..

wp7 1st update will be available early 2012, but might have to wait until early 2014*.true story.* = lawyer put it there for just in case.

i just want socket supportHopefully adobe can get flash on it too.

I still hate iphone. Hate is a strong word so let me be clear. I HATE iPHONE. I am going to go take a crap right now in honor of the iphone...uhhhhh, plop! :)Oh, and yes, Windows needs to update a few things like yesterday!
