Xbox One indie games likely to launch early 2014

Xbox Reveal

If you love indie games, you might be a bit disappointed by Microsoft’s latest statement at Games Industry International. The company’s corporate vice president, Phil Harrison, stated that indie titles for Xbox One are mostly likely to launch in early 2014.

Microsoft has received “hundreds” of applications for its Independent Developers @ Xbox program, but Harrison does not believe it is “realistic to see a developer get the program and build a game and get it into the market on November 22nd.

Harrison went on to state that he felt it would be more realistic to expect indie games to hit the Xbox market in early 2014. In the meantime, Harrison does not forget to remind everyone about the great launch line-up of games including Dead Rising 3, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Are there enough launch titles to satisfy your craving or do you need some indie titles to munch down on?

Crimson Dragon and Zoo Tycoon too, plenty of great games to stay busy with.

Quantano says:

Titanfall is a must have but sadly its not a launch title.

PeadarWagon says:

"Hay" is for horses.

This honestly means next to nothing to me, I don't pay hundreds of dollars to play smartphone games.

andreirlopes says:

Halo, Ryse e Minecraft is all that I need for now. But knowing that still I can count with Assassin's Creed 4 and Dead Rising 3... Yeah, more than enough.

I was hoping most of the already fantastic XBLA games on 360 would be available for download on One at launch. I find those types of games more fun.

SmoothDog says:

XB1 (correction Xbone) is anti-consumer, anti-indie developer, anti-privacy and anti-gamer. Didn't WPCentral get the memo? TheVerge certainly did.

daveh101 says:

I don't really want to respond to this because I'm pretty certain you are just trolling - but let's have a bit of justification

SmoothDog says:

Forgot the /s. Sorry for the confusion.

SayMehName says:

I can't tell if you're trolling. If you aren't then I must tell you that the Kinect does not have to be plugged in.

glassadam says:

Well I thought it was obvious you're being sarcastic. Clever, too. Kudos, man. :)

greg2k says:

GTA V? Not sure if confirmed that it's coming, but that would be my launch title...

Mystictrust says:

There basically isn't even a rumor of it coming, just maybe a vague reference to a possibility. I'd bet late 2014 if it happens.

I think Microsoft continues to make a big mistake by not courting indie developers. Given that they keep bringing up big budget games it seems apparent that they really don't care about the little guys. However, it's a big industry with a huge base of consumers. These are the guys who directly contributed to success of both iOS and Steam.

The big budget games are irrelevant because those guys for the most part are going to ensure their games are cross platform. And ironically every one of those games Harrison mentioned are definitely going to be cross platform. So outside of the rare exclusive, for which Sony has a counterpart, what is there to distinguish you but indie games?

This is one of the reasons why Windows Phone continues to struggle against Android and iOS. Outside of a handful of rare gems we get third-tier ports of crappy big budget mobile games, too many of which are ruined further by freemium models.

Indie games may be the thing that defines success in the upcoming generation. It's ironic that while Microsoft opened the door it is now closing, it's Sony who is courting those developers.

I don't get your comment. I mean XBox 360 has a whole channel dedicated to indie devs. Now if you want to hop on XBLA, then you have to jump through hoops. Which I think they should. That way XBLA doesn't get flooded with crap games. Plus, MS has laid out their plans for even more indie support. I mean, the console will be able to be used as a dev kit! What else do you want?

glassadam says:

More and more I feel like MS was secretly hoping that the next gen wouldn't start until fall 2014 instead of this year. I just feel like they seem under-prepared.

Blu3V3nom07 says:

That sounds alright.

Skiffle says:

Lol, admin deleted my comment... Fags!

Gmotagi says:

The trouble is that ms isn't accepting applications from indie devs right now only the top few are getting in.
